The People Want The Fall Of The Regime: Schooling, Political Protest, And The Economy, Filipe R. Campante, Davin Chor Mar 2011

The People Want The Fall Of The Regime: Schooling, Political Protest, And The Economy, Filipe R. Campante, Davin Chor

Research Collection School Of Economics

We provide evidence that economic circumstances are a key intermediating variable for understanding the relationship between schooling and political protest. Using the World Values Survey, we find that individuals with higher levels of schooling, but whose income outcomes fall short of that predicted by their biographical characteristics, in turn display a greater propensity to engage in protest activities. We discuss a number of interpretations that are consistent with this finding, including the idea that economic conditions can affect how individuals trade off the use of their human capital between production and political activities. Our results could also reflect a link …

Decomposing The Changes Of The Divisia Price Index: Application To Inflation In The Philippines, Tomoki Fujii Mar 2011

Decomposing The Changes Of The Divisia Price Index: Application To Inflation In The Philippines, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose a method to decompose the logarithmic change of the Divisia price index into the pure price effect, the preference effect and the substitution effect. Our empirical results in the Philippines shows the effects of preference change on the Divisia price index are heterogeneous but positive across all regions and income deciles. However, they are dominated by the pure price effect.

2009 Pay And Pension Commission Report, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2011

2009 Pay And Pension Commission Report, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The 2009 Pay and Pension Commission (PPC) Report is a major departure from the previous reports in so far as it examines compensation reforms as part of the overall reforms of the whole value china of human resource policies of the government. The Report’s findings are based on the basic premise that the channel of economic growth filtering down effectively to the poor and less privileged is a function of public sector governance – policy making, regulation, implementation of projects and programs, and delivery of basic services. Government has therefore, a critical role to play not by controlling the commanding …

Good Governance For Dummies, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2011

Good Governance For Dummies, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

President Asif Ali Zardari administered oath of office to a 22-person federal cabinet last Friday. Almost three years in, his party’s government says this has been done to address concerns about “good governance.” This is a good start, but there are other things that he and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani can and should do.

First, we need to progress toward democratic governance. The Election Commission of Pakistan must be neutral and empowered. Political parties must run cleanly and democratically: they must hold regular intra-party elections, submit their audited accounts and statements of assets of members, and adhere strictly to …

The Curacao Tourist Board commissioned the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida to conduct an analysis of tourists' perceptions with regard to the Curacao tourism product, the tourist profile, and the spending behavior of tourists frequenting the island. In addition, the CTB requested that the DPI provided recommendations to the CTB regarding the enhancement of the tourist data collection process, the data analysis, and the re-design of the Tourist Exit Survey itself. Of the 3,390 survey respondents assessed according to year (2007 = 1,938; 2008 = …

Economic Impact Of Various Budgetary Policy Options For The State Of Michigan To Resolve Its Budget Deficit For Fy 2004, Timothy J. Bartik, George A. Erickcek Feb 2011

Economic Impact Of Various Budgetary Policy Options For The State Of Michigan To Resolve Its Budget Deficit For Fy 2004, Timothy J. Bartik, George A. Erickcek

Reports

The State of Michigan is facing a $925 million budget deficit in Fiscal Year 2004 which began in October 2003. This research brief summarizes the findings of an analysis of the potential economic impacts to the state's economy of the following three budgetary policy options: 1. Eliminate the deficit by cutting state spending by $925 million. 2. Raise sufficient revenues to balance the state's budget by increasing the state's personal income tax rate to an estimated 4.7 percent. 3. Delay for one year the scheduled roll back of the state's personal income tax rate from 4.0 percent to 3.9 percent. …

Disconnects & Mismatches, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2011

Disconnects & Mismatches, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Popular discourse pertaining to Pakistan`s economic problems usually takes place at a highly superficial level, looking merely at symptoms. It is essential to go beyond generalisations and diagnose the real sources of the malignancy affecting the economy.

Several disconnects and mismatches of various kinds are sapping the economy`s energy and vitality. These need to be fixed as part of a medium-term consensus agenda. First, unlike the past where the rural population lived under miserable conditions, the increase in commodity prices has transferred additional purchasing power worth about Rs450-500bn from the urban economy to the rural. Rural incomes are exempt from …

Drivers Of Globalization, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2011

Drivers Of Globalization, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Having listened to distinguished luminaries such as Prof Ishwar Dayal there is hardly very much I can add or contribute to the discourse initiated this morning. But as a student of economics I know that I should stick to my comparative advantage. What I therefore propose to do this afternoon is to spell out what I consider are the main Drivers of Globalization. I would then argue that unless we understand those Drivers of Globalization we cannot have a picture of what the firms or business - individually and collectively - are going to look like in the future.

First National Study Of People With Disabilities Who Are Self-Employed, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Feb 2011

First National Study Of People With Disabilities Who Are Self-Employed, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

In the last twelve years, interest has steadily grown in self-employment for people with disabilities. In part, this is due to research showing that people with disabilities report self-employment at a higher rate than the general population, and that 20-25 percent of participants in special “Choices” demonstration projects funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration were interested in starting businesses. In light of persistently high unemployment rates among people with disabilities, it appears that many have chosen to pursue self-employment. RTC: Rural researchers exploring self-employment as a rural employment option frequently field questions about business owners with disabilities: How many people …

The Employment Impacts Of Wind Power Development In Maine 2003-2010, Charles S. Colgan Feb 2011

The Employment Impacts Of Wind Power Development In Maine 2003-2010, Charles S. Colgan

Economic Impact Analysis

The development of wind power in Maine has emerged as a significant economic opportunity in the past several years, providing one of the few growing sectors in the latter half of the last decade. The employment impact of this development has been discussed in regulatory filings before, but has not been examined in detail using post-construction data on actual wind power projects. This report examines the employment impacts of three major wind power projects: Mars Hill in Aroostook County, Stetson Mountain in Washington County, and Kibby Mountain in Franklin County. (Stetson and Kibby were undertaken in two phases.) These projects …

Do The Gses Expand The Supply Of Mortgage Credit? New Evidence Of Crowd Out In The Secondary Mortgage Market, Stuart A. Gabriel, Stuart S. Rosenthal Feb 2011

Do The Gses Expand The Supply Of Mortgage Credit? New Evidence Of Crowd Out In The Secondary Mortgage Market, Stuart A. Gabriel, Stuart S. Rosenthal

Economics - All Scholarship

The dramatic government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in September, 2008 was motivated in part by a desire to ensure a continued flow of credit to the mortgage market. This study examines a closely related issue: the extent to which GSE activity crowds out mortgage purchases by private secondary market intermediaries. Evidence of substantial crowd out suggests that government support for the GSEs may be less warranted, whereas the absence of crowd out implies that GSE loan purchases enhance liquidity.

Using 1994-2008 HMDA data for conventional, conforming sized loans, three distinct periods with regard to GSE crowd out …

Socio-Economic Condition Of Child Worker Of Bangladesh In Their Adulthood: An Econometric Analysis, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Biswajit Bacher

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

This study mainly focuses on the current socio-economic condition of those people who were child labor in their childhood. In this study, economic indicators are income and employment status. On the other hand, level of education, health status and role in case of decision making in the society are studied as social indicators. According to this study, socio-economic condition of child workers in their adulthood is not very satisfactory. This research work have used Linear Probability Model (LPM) and Weighted Least Square (WLS) regression analysis to make comparison of current socio-economic status between people who were child labor in their …

The Structure Of The American Economy, Eric O'N. Fisher, Kathryn G. Marshall Feb 2011

The Structure Of The American Economy, Eric O'N. Fisher, Kathryn G. Marshall

Economics

We explore the relationship between input–output accounts and the national revenue function. The generalized inverse of an economy’s technology matrix carries information relating changes in endowments with changes in outputs; its transpose relates output prices and factor prices. Our primary theoretical contribution is to derive an economy’s revenue function for an arbitrary Leontief technology. Our main empirical contribution is to compute the national revenue function for the American economy in 2003 and to describe its properties. We implement our ideas using two different models: one where all factors are mobile and another with sector-specific capital.

Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti Feb 2011

Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti

Whittier Scholars Program

Time variations in expected returns are related to the business cycle. Evidence shows that expected returns are higher in economic recessions, since investors are less willing to hold risky assets, and lower in economic booms. This suggests that time variations in equity premiums should be accounted for by variables related to the business cycle. Being able to model equity premiums helps investors optimize their portfolios. Therefore, we develop a conditioning macroeconomic variable that captures time variation in risk premium across business cycles and we test its predictive power for future market returns. More specifically we look at the following macro-economic …

Large Deviations Of Generalized Method Of Moments And Empirical Likelihood Estimators, Taisuke Otsu Feb 2011

Large Deviations Of Generalized Method Of Moments And Empirical Likelihood Estimators, Taisuke Otsu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies large deviation properties of the generalized method of moments and generalized empirical likelihood estimators for moment restriction models. We consider two cases for the data generating probability measure: the model assumption and local deviations from the model assumption. For both cases, we derive conditions where these estimators have exponentially small error probabilities for point estimation.

Wealth Effects Revisited, 1978-2009, Karl E. Case, John M. Quigley, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We re-examine the link between changes in housing wealth, financial wealth, and consumer spending. We extend a panel of U.S. states observed quarterly during the seventeen-year period, 1982 through 1999, to the thirty-one year period, 1978 through 2009. Using techniques reported previously, we impute the aggregate value of owner-occupied housing, the value of financial assets, and measures of aggregate consumption for each of the geographic units over time. We estimate regression models in levels, first differences and in error-correction form, relating per capita consumption to per capita income and wealth. We find a statistically significant and rather large effect of …

Moderate Deviations Of Generalized Method Of Moments And Empirical Likelihood Estimators, Taisuke Otsu Feb 2011

Moderate Deviations Of Generalized Method Of Moments And Empirical Likelihood Estimators, Taisuke Otsu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies moderate deviation behaviors of the generalized method of moments and generalized empirical likelihood estimators for generalized estimating equations, where the number of equations can be larger than the number of unknown parameters. We consider two cases for the data generating probability measure: the model assumption and local contaminations or deviations from the model assumption. For both cases, we characterize the first-order terms of the moderate deviation error probabilities of these estimators. Our moderate deviation analysis complements the existing literature of the local asymptotic analysis and misspecification analysis for estimating equations, and is useful to evaluate power and …
