Six Titans Of The Cambridge School: A Review Article, Harvey Gram
Six Titans Of The Cambridge School: A Review Article, Harvey Gram
Publications and Research
Six volumes in the Great Thinker in Economics Series were chosen by the Editors for this review, which focuses on The Cambridge School of Economics, so very different from the mainstream theory of general economic equilibrium which gives formal expression to Lionel Robbins’ famous definition of the subject as the allocation of scarce means among alternative uses. In recognition of a distinct Cambridge School, the authors of these volumes present a variety of arguments within which three overlapping themes can be discerned: the relationship between ethics and economics; the role of stocks and flows in economic analysis; and the epistemic …

Essays On Testing Hypotheses When Non-Stationarity Exists In Panel Data Models, Sang Gon Na
Essays On Testing Hypotheses When Non-Stationarity Exists In Panel Data Models, Sang Gon Na
Economics - Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays on testing hypotheses in panel data models when non-stationarity exists in the model. This is done under the high-dimensional framework where both n (cross-section dimension) and T (time series dimension) are large. In the first essay, I discuss the limiting distribution of the t-statistic; using different panel data estimators and propose using the t-statistic based on Feasible GLS estimator. In the second essay, I develop the bootstrap F-statistic for cross-sectional independence in a panel data model with factor structure.
The first essay considers the problem of hypotheses testing in a simple panel data regression …
The Bottom Line: Accounting For Revenues And Expenditures In Intercollegiate Athletics, Victor Matheson, Debra J. O'Connor, Joseph H. Herberger
The Bottom Line: Accounting For Revenues And Expenditures In Intercollegiate Athletics, Victor Matheson, Debra J. O'Connor, Joseph H. Herberger
Economics Department Working Papers
This paper examines the profitability of Division I athletic programs at colleges and universities in the United States under a variety of accounting definitions of profit. The data identify several broad themes. First, a majority of athletic departments rely heavily on direct and indirect subsidization of their programs by the student body, the institution itself, and state governments in order to balance their books. Without such funding, less than a third of BCS athletic departments and no non-BCS departments are in the black. Second, athletic programs rely heavily on contributions to balance their books. Donations to athletic departments may serve …
Have Confidence In Your Interval Estimates: Improving Cognition Of Confidence Intervals Used In Business Forecasting, Jeffrey Maurath Price
Have Confidence In Your Interval Estimates: Improving Cognition Of Confidence Intervals Used In Business Forecasting, Jeffrey Maurath Price
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
Confidence intervals convey valuable information regarding the uncertainty of point estimates, and their utility to users of business forecasts is no exception. The conclusions drawn from these forecasts can be significantly impacted by the perception of a confidence interval's distribution, however. There is a tendency for business managers and other decision makers who lack statistical expertise, despite being generally well educated, to incorrectly assume confidence intervals are uniformly distributed. This study investigates the efficacy of various techniques for presenting confidence interval information at conveying the details of the underlying statistical distribution. The results demonstrate significant improvement in the accurate interpretation …
The Non-Linear Influence Of School Quality On Home Prices In The Dayton, Oh Msa, Thomas Andrew Welton
The Non-Linear Influence Of School Quality On Home Prices In The Dayton, Oh Msa, Thomas Andrew Welton
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This paper analyzes the Dayton, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) to examine the extent to which public school quality influences housing prices. Research is conducted in the Dayton region at both the city and neighborhood levels. City level analysis indicates a significant linear relationship between school quality and home prices. However, the results of this analysis are likely distorted by collinearity between school quality and neighborhood characteristics, such as crime rate. In an effort to mitigate collinearity and control for neighborhood characteristics, neighborhood level analysis is conducted using 933 individual homes located in areas where separate school districts border. The …
Water Resource Distribution: Neoliberal Versus A Social Provisioning Approach, Laura Dotson
Water Resource Distribution: Neoliberal Versus A Social Provisioning Approach, Laura Dotson
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The purpose of this research is to examine how privatization of water resources has created social inequalities and environmental degradation on an international scale by understanding the ways in which water has become a market commodity, and how water resources are managed within a private framework versus a public framework. Two frameworks will be compared: neoliberal policy and the social provisioning approach to managing water resources. It is argued that social provisioning ought to be the focus of policy formulation so as to diminish the degree in which social inequalities and environmental degradation are generated by privatization. As a result, …

Ohio's Aerospace & Aviation Industries, Wright State University Center For Urban And Public Affairs
Economic Development
Despite the struggling economy and the challenges that have plagued the commercial aviation market, the U.S. Aerospace and Aviation industries have experienced growth and an increase in profits and sales from 2005 to 2009.
There is a window of opportunity for the State of Ohio to emerge as a global industry leader. In order to capitalize on this opportunity, the State must address critical gaps in workforce and economic development. The talent development pipeline must focus not only on meeting the current business demand, but also on anticipating future national demand. This forward reaching strategy would position the state to …
Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling
Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling
Student Works
This paper draws upon Egyptian documentary papyri in order to show more fully the quantitative purchasing power of items of economic significance in Luke 15. Specifically, the stories of the lost drachma, lost sheep, and prodigal son each mention economic items which—when compared with the papyrological data—can more fully elucidate areas of economic import which have not been looked at before. In doing so, the article builds upon, and supports, the framework of Roman economic "middling groups" as posited by Longenecker (2009). Furthermore, a close look at Luke 15 when compared with the Egyptian papyrological data suggests the possibility of …

The Great Indian Growth Puzzle: What Caused A Spike In 2003?, Aditya Bindal
The Great Indian Growth Puzzle: What Caused A Spike In 2003?, Aditya Bindal
CMC Senior Theses
This paper will employ unit root tests for finding structural breaks endogenously among India’s key macroeconomic aggregate series, as well as their components and subcomponents. The same analysis will be repeated, wherever data are available, for states. The results from these unit root tests will then be used in regression models for national and state level data to understand the causes behind structural breaks. We find that breakpoints cluster around 1982 and 2003 for most series at the national and state level. The services component appears to be a promising candidate for explaining the 2003 structural break in some of …

First, why do firms charge interest rates well beyond their cost of funds and second, are there important differences at the national level that can help us to understand the high interest rates in Microfinance? I find that interest rates are primarily a result of operating expenses, but profit-status has large effects in developed Microfinance markets. I also find that the Economist Intelligence Unit’s measures of regulatory environment and industrial development explain a large portion of the variation in …
Brain Drain Out Of Hungary And Its Inhibitors, Eliza Plous
Brain Drain Out Of Hungary And Its Inhibitors, Eliza Plous
Capstone Collection
In many Central and Eastern European countries, a poor economic climate at home forces young people to make their careers in the West. Hungary is no exception. After spending time both studying and working in Hungary, the author chose to investigate the phenomenon known as “brain drain”: the large-scale emigration of young, educated individuals from Hungary as they seek higher salaries and more promising career prospects in neighboring Western European countries. This paper offers a comprehensive report on the economics of the brain drain problem, and on the opinions of young Hungarians who are currently seeking employment abroad; it also …

Three Sisters Exchange: Building Alliances And Promoting Justice From The United States To Ecuador, Ariel Climer
Capstone Collection
This paper presents a proposal for a social justice and action-based study abroad program with foundations in the short-term reality tours of the education and human rights-based NGO, Global Exchange, a far-reaching non-profit with friendships built on solidarity against the spread of elite globalization. The program is called the Three Sisters Exchange to honor the sustainable design of indigenous crop planting prevalent around the world. The design comes at a time when international educators offer few programs with foci in social justice. The international education field needs more sustainable programs that take into account global systems. A propagation of such …
Public Policy, Human Instincts, And Economic Growth, Jonathan B. Wight
Public Policy, Human Instincts, And Economic Growth, Jonathan B. Wight
Economics Faculty Publications
Alfred Marshall famously insisted that economics is more like biology than physics. Societies are organic ecologies that evolve and produce organized but unplanned complexity (Hayek 1979). Although no public policy reliably produces economic growth across all ecosystems, a key element unites diverse institutions and policies that do seem to work: they all are reasonably compatible with human instinct. Institutions that build on the basic instinct for self-betterment (as in markets) have a much easier time in achieving success than institutions that oppose it (as in communism). Instincts, like gravity, are a force of nature. Adam Smith theorized, for example, …

Sweet Diversity: Colonial Goods And The Welfare Gains From Trade After 1492, Jonathan Hersh, Hans-Joachim Voth
Sweet Diversity: Colonial Goods And The Welfare Gains From Trade After 1492, Jonathan Hersh, Hans-Joachim Voth
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
When did overseas trade start to matter for living standards? Traditional real-wage indices suggest that living standards in Europe stagnated before 1800. In this paper, we argue that welfare rose substantially, but surreptitiously, because of an influx of new goods as a result of overseas trade. Colonial luxuries such as tea, coffee, and sugar transformed European diets after the discovery of America and the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope. These goods became household items in many countries by the end of the 18th century. We use three different methods to calculate welfare gains based on price data and …
Radio Spectrum And The Disruptive Clarity Of Ronald Coase, Thomas W. Hazlett, David P. Porter, Vernon L. Smith
Radio Spectrum And The Disruptive Clarity Of Ronald Coase, Thomas W. Hazlett, David P. Porter, Vernon L. Smith
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
In the Federal Communications Commission, Ronald Coase exposed deep foundations via normative argument buttressed by astute historical observation. The government controlled scarce frequencies, issuing sharply limited use rights. Spillovers were said to be otherwise endemic. Coase saw that Government limited conflicts by restricting uses; property owners perform an analogous function via the “price system.” The government solution was inefficient unless the net benefits of the alternative property regime were lower. Coase augured that the price system would outperform. His spectrum auction proposal was mocked by communications policy experts, opposed by industry interests, and ridiculed by policy makers. Hence, it took …
Is A Beautiful System Dying? A Possible Smithian Take On The Financial Crisis And Its Aftermath, Maria Pia Paganelli
Is A Beautiful System Dying? A Possible Smithian Take On The Financial Crisis And Its Aftermath, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
Adam Smith is not an optimistic describer of a providential order moved by an always-successful invisible hand. I present some of the more pessimistic analysis of Smith, which, unfortunately, seems to be most appropriate to describe and analyze our current affairs. This reading of Smith may provide an explanation for the events started in the fall of 2008.
The ‘beautiful system of natural liberty’ that Smith describes is a system that may be achieved only under rare circumstances. Smith recognizes systematic biases in human behaviours, ranging from overestimation of probability of success to almost blind admiration for the rich. He …
Opportunity Cost Of Land And Urban Growth, Bo Jiang
Opportunity Cost Of Land And Urban Growth, Bo Jiang
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
This study examines the impact of the opportunity cost of urban land on urban growth. Based on prices, costs and productivity data on agricultural commodities at county levels, the opportunity cost of land was measured by the weighted revenue, cost, and government payment per acre of farm lands. Aggregating county data to metropolitan area levels, a panel data for 269 metropolitan areas from 1978-2000 were constructed. This study found that, as predicted by the theory, cities grow slower when revenue increases or cost decrease in the area. The impact of commodity program payment was also examined. Our results show that …
Price Levels And Dispersion With Asymmetric Information, Tanmoy Bhattacharya
Price Levels And Dispersion With Asymmetric Information, Tanmoy Bhattacharya
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
In the extensive literature on price dispersions that exists to date, there is a gap in the analysis of how market structure affects prices as well as the degree of dispersion in prices. Specifically, the literature is deficient in analyzing how price levels and price dispersion are affected by the number of firms operating in a market. I use secondary data to look at the prices of prescription drugs at the retail level in nine hundred and seventy pharmacies across one hundred and sixty five markets in Maryland and compare price dispersion across these brick and mortar pharmacies as well …
Identifiability Of The Misspecified Split Hazard Models, Sanjiv Jaggia
Identifiability Of The Misspecified Split Hazard Models, Sanjiv Jaggia
Economics
Unlike standard models, a split population hazard model allows the exit probability to be less than one. Although conceptually attractive, split models are prone to identification problems. In the reduced form estimation of the hazard function, the influence of split may not be distinguishable from that of neglected heterogeneity. For illustration, I use Monte Carlo simulations to highlight the problem of interpreting the structural parameters of the split Weibull and the Weibull-gamma models.

Special Education, Poverty, And The Limits Of Private Enforcement, Eloise Pasachoff
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This Article examines the appropriate balance between public and private enforcement of statutes seeking to distribute resources or social services to a socioeconomically diverse set of beneficiaries through a case study of the federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It focuses particularly on the extent to which the Act’s enforcement regime sufficiently enforces the law for the poor. The Article responds to the frequent contention that private enforcement of statutory regimes is necessary to compensate for the shortcomings of public enforcement. Public enforcement, the story goes, is inefficient and relies on underfunded, captured, or impotent …
Variation In The Dynamic Response Of Housing Markets, Andrew Pate Hill
Variation In The Dynamic Response Of Housing Markets, Andrew Pate Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluates the existence of asset bubbles in Florida metropolitan statistical areas during 2000–2010. Estimation occurs in two stages with the first being the estimated fundamental price of housing using a fixed effects estimator. Once the fundamental price of housing is determined an error correction model of housing prices is estimated to evaluate the degrees of serial correlation and mean reversion existing in the sampled geographic areas. Serial correlation and mean reversion are then interacted with the hypothesized effects of information costs, supply costs, and expectations of future price behavior to uncover variation in the dynamic response of housing. …

A Nonparametric Bounds Approach For Hedonic Housing Price Indexes With An Application To The Southern California Market 1996 To 2008, Zhizhong Shan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I propose a nonparametric bounds approach for hedonic housing price models partially identified due to sample selection of an unknown form. To construct bounds for the identification region, I use a nonparametric hedonic housing price model that allows spatial correlation and propose estimators of extreme conditional quantiles. The estimated bounds are then used to generate price indexes in the form of a time-series of intervals. In contrast to conventional housing price indexes, these interval-valued indexes do not suffer from sample selection bias. The approach is used to construct both metro and zip code level price indexes from a sample of …
