The Impact Of The 1990'S Economic Boom On Less Educated Workers In Rural America, Elizabeth E. Davis, Stacie Bosley Jan 2007

The Impact Of The 1990'S Economic Boom On Less Educated Workers In Rural America, Elizabeth E. Davis, Stacie Bosley

School of Business All Faculty Scholarship

This study uses National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) data to investigate whether the effect of local labor market conditions on the earnings of workers differs by gender, education level, or metropolitan/nonmetropolitan location. The results suggest that local economic conditions in the late 1990s did have a positive effect overall on wages for men with no more than a high school degree and for women regardless of education. Further, there is evidence of a difference between metro and nonmetro labor markets, suggesting that the 1990s boom helped urban less-educated workers but not those in rural areas. The metro-nonmetro difference is …

A Random Matching Theory, C. D. Aliprantis, Gabriele Camera, D. Puzzello Jan 2007

A Random Matching Theory, C. D. Aliprantis, Gabriele Camera, D. Puzzello

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

We develop theoretical underpinnings of pairwise random matching processes. We formalize the mechanics of matching, and study the links between properties of the different processes and trade frictions. A particular emphasis is placed on providing a mapping between matching technologies and informational constraints.

Trading Horizons And The Value Of Money, Gabriele Camera, Filip Vesely Jan 2007

Trading Horizons And The Value Of Money, Gabriele Camera, Filip Vesely

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper shows that flat money can be feasible and essential even if the trading horizon is finite and deterministic. The result hinges on two features of our model. First, individual actions can affect the future availability of productive resources. So, agents may be willing to sell for money, even if on that date they have no reason to accept it. This makes monetary trade feasible in all preceding dates. Second, agents are anonymous and direct their search for partners. So, gift-giving arrangements may be prevented because agents can misrepresent their consumption needs. This makes money essential in exploiting any …

Analyzing The Relationship Between Change In Money Supply And Stock Market Prices, Biniv Maskay '07 Jan 2007

Analyzing The Relationship Between Change In Money Supply And Stock Market Prices, Biniv Maskay '07

Honors Projects

This paper examines the relationship between change in the money supply and the level of stock prices. This paper also dichotomizes change in the money supply into anticipated and unanticipated change and analyzes each of their relationships with stock market prices. Competing theories exist on how change in the money supply affects stock prices. The real activity theorists argue that change in the money supply and stock prices are positively related, where as the Keynesian economists argue otherwise. This study finds a positive relationship between change in the money supply and stock prices, agreeing with the real activity theorists. Economists …

The Effects Of International Diversification On Portfolio Risk, Angela Agati '07 Jan 2007

The Effects Of International Diversification On Portfolio Risk, Angela Agati '07

Honors Projects

With the growing global economy, understanding international stock market correlations has become a vital instrument for investors wishing to diversify their portfolios on a global basis. For investors to have effective international portfolio diversification it is important to determine the countries whose stock prices move together, those whose stock prices move in opposite directions and those whose stock prices are unrelated all together. In order to analyze the impact of stock market correlations, this paper will focus on stock market indices in the U.S., Shanghai and the European Union. According to theory, maintaining portfolios primarily in highly positively correlated markets …

Measuring The Impact Of Urban Amenities On Average Wages In Metropolitan Areas, Benjamin Burry '07 Jan 2007

Measuring The Impact Of Urban Amenities On Average Wages In Metropolitan Areas, Benjamin Burry '07

Honors Projects

This paper seeks to quantify the impacts of climate, crime, population density, and travel time on median hourly wage in urban areas using the hedonic approach. In accordance with theory of utility equalization across urban areas, worker ski11level, job composition, and intercity cost of living differences are held constant. This study's sample size consists of thirty-one metropolitan statistical areas in the continental U.S. with a population greater than five hundred thousand. Results support a significant impact ofurban amenities on wages.

No. 47: The Haemorrhage Of Health Professionals From South Africa: Medical Opinions, Wade Pendleton, Jonathan Crush, Kate Lefko-Everett Jan 2007

No. 47: The Haemorrhage Of Health Professionals From South Africa: Medical Opinions, Wade Pendleton, Jonathan Crush, Kate Lefko-Everett

Southern African Migration Programme

The health sector has been especially hard hit by the brain drain from South Africa. Unless the push factors are successfully addressed, intense interest in emigration will continue to translate into departure for as long as demand exists abroad (and there is little sign of this letting up.) Health professional decision-making about leaving, staying or returning is poorly-understood and primarily anecdotal. To understand how push and pull factors interact in decision- making (and the mediating role of variables such as profession, race, class, age, gender income and experience), the opinions of health professionals themselves need to be sought.

No. 46: Voices From The Margins: Migrant Women’S Experiences In Southern Africa, Kate Lefko-Everett

Southern African Migration Programme

The concept of the feminization of migration traditionally refers to the growth in numbers and relative importance of women’s migration, particularly from and within developing countries. In Africa, for example, the proportion of female migrants rose from 42% of the total in 1 960 to almost 50% at the present time. This process is a result, first, of the continued impoverishment and marginalization of many women in developing countries; and second, of the increasing demand for female labour in the service industries of industrial and industrializing countries.

The United Nations suggests that the full implications of migration and mobility for …

The Dynamics Of Daily Retail Gasoline Prices, Michael C. Davis Jan 2007

The Dynamics Of Daily Retail Gasoline Prices, Michael C. Davis

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previous research has analyzed the behavior of retail gasoline stations in how they adjust their prices. In this paper we analyze the daily movements in prices of four retail gasoline stations located in Newburgh, New York. We find some evidence to support the notion that the behavior is explained by menu costs. There is substantial evidence that the firms adjust their prices asymmetrically, being more inclined to increase than to decrease prices. We conclude that the pricing behavior is being determined by a combination of search costs for the consumers and menu costs for the producers. Copyright © 2007 John …

Global Impact Of Energy Use In Middle East Oil Economies: A Modeling Framework For Analyzing Technology-Energy-Environment-Economy Chain, Hodjat Ghadimi Jan 2007

Global Impact Of Energy Use In Middle East Oil Economies: A Modeling Framework For Analyzing Technology-Energy-Environment-Economy Chain, Hodjat Ghadimi

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

To explore choices of improving energy efficiency in energy-rich countries of the Middle East, this study lays out an integrated modeling framework for analyzing the technology-energy-environment-economy chain for the case of an energy exporting country. This framework consists of an input output process-flow model (IOPM) and a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The former investigates the micro-level production processes and sectoral interdependencies to show how alternative technologies affect the energy intensity of the economy (Lin, Polenske 1998 and Polenske, McMichael 2002). The latter belongs to the optimal depletion category of CGE models that analyzes energy economy interaction; it is an …

Modeling And Estimation Issues In Spatial Simultaneous Equations Models, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam Jan 2007

Modeling And Estimation Issues In Spatial Simultaneous Equations Models, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Spatial dependence is one of the main problems in stochastic processes and can be caused by a variety of measurement problems that are associated with the arbitrary delineation of spatial units of observation (such as counties boundaries, census tracts), problems of spatial aggregation, and the presence of spatial externalities and spillover effects. The existence of spatial dependence would then mean that the observations contain less information than if there had been spatial independence. Consequently, hypothesis tests and the statistical properties for estimators in the standard econometric approach will not hold. Thus, in order to obtain approximately the same information as …

Part 1: Back To Earth: The Regional Economy Slows Down, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

After a spectacular first half of this decade, the regional economy decelerated in 2007. A combination of declining rates of growth in defense spending, the closing of the Ford Norfolk Assembly Plant and a sluggish national economy reduced the growth of the regional economy to the national average. Looming base realignment and closure reductions beginning in 2008 bode to continue this trend.

Part 3: 'Tis Better To Give Than To Receive: Charitable Giving In Hampton Roads, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

We are a generous lot in Hampton Roads. The region’s citizens give a higher proportion of their incomes to charity than the national average and African Americans, who direct very high proportions of their incomes to churches, lead the parade. Overall, the region’s citizens give 8.2 percent of their annual incomes to charity, easily topping the national average of 6.4 percent.

Part 2: Hidden In Plain Sight: The Ship Repair Industry In Hampton Roads, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Private-sector shipbuilding and repair is big business in Hampton Roads and accounts, directly and indirectly, for about 15 percent of the total value of the region’s economic activity. More than 160 ship construction and repair firms in the area employ approximately 24,600 people, whose typical compensation is one-third above the regional average.

Part 5: Affordable Housing In Hampton Roads: Facts And Issues, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2007

Part 5: Affordable Housing In Hampton Roads: Facts And Issues, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

The rapid increase in regional housing prices in recent years (97 percent between 1997 and 2006) has made it much more difficult for some people to own their own home. Between these years, the annual interest and principal payments required for a typical home purchase rose from only 21.5 percent of the median income of our region’s households to 32 percent. Economically viable solutions to affordable housing challenges nearly always include increased housing density in order to make more moderately priced housing profitable to builders.
