Financing Chinese Capitalism: Principal Banks, Economic Crisis, And Chinese Family Firms In Singapore, Henry W. Yeung
Financing Chinese Capitalism: Principal Banks, Economic Crisis, And Chinese Family Firms In Singapore, Henry W. Yeung
Cultural Approaches to Asian Financial Markets
It is a widely circulated myth that Chinese family firms rely exclusively on kinship ties and network capital to finance their domestic and international operations. In this empirical paper, I argue that large Chinese family firms are increasingly engaging with financial markets on a global scale. In order to finance their transnational business activities, these firms require financial services from banks beyond their domestic economies, resulting in a growing number and geographical spread of their principal banks. Second, I contend that as these Chinese family firms are diversifying their principal banks beyond a narrow confinement to other Chinese family-owned banks …
The Effects Of Ceo Compensation Structure On Reported Earnings And Shareholder Wealth, Kory J. Blumer '03
The Effects Of Ceo Compensation Structure On Reported Earnings And Shareholder Wealth, Kory J. Blumer '03
Honors Projects
Corporate executives are paid at extremely high levels compared to lower-level employees, especially in the United States, and their level of compensation usually does not change based on company performance with respect to competitors, but rather with changes in their company's stock price. It is well known that executive compensation among U.S. corporations is comprised mostly of stock options, sometimes up to 90% of overall compensation (Edgar 2002). These stock options allow executives, namely chief executive officers (CEOs), to cash in big bucks during good times and risk zero losses during bad times.

Testing The Effectiveness Of Deregulation In The Electric Utility Industry: A Market-Based Approach, Manfen Wang
Testing The Effectiveness Of Deregulation In The Electric Utility Industry: A Market-Based Approach, Manfen Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
In this paper, I investigate one stated purpose of deregulation in the electric utility industry—to make utility operations more responsive to news releases, a proxy for market forces. My premise is that utilities providing electricity to highly deregulated states will be more responsive to market forces than those providing electricity to non-deregulated states. I employ intraday data from April to June 2001, the year after deregulation, and from 1994, the year before deregulation. I also employ the Brown-Forsythe-Modified Levene (BFL) test to determine the volatility differences between days with released news and days without released news. The results of BFL …
The Effect Of School Size, Socioeconomic Status, And Grade -Level Configuration On Academic Achievement In Louisiana Public Schools, Scarlet L. Chopin
The Effect Of School Size, Socioeconomic Status, And Grade -Level Configuration On Academic Achievement In Louisiana Public Schools, Scarlet L. Chopin
Doctoral Dissertations
The national emphasis on continually improving education for all students coupled with accountability requires educators and policymakers to identify and implement effective schooling structures and strategies. In this study, the researcher examined the relationship among school size, socioeconomic status of students, the interaction of school size and socioeconomic status (SES), grade-level configuration, and academic achievement in Louisiana. An extensive data set representing 1362 public PK–12 schools was analyzed at the 4th, 8th, and 10th grade levels. The construct of schooling as a production process was used as a theoretical model wherein the education production function was used to describe the …

In Medio Stat Virtus: An Alternative View Of Usury In Adam Smith’S Thinking, Maria Pia Paganelli
In Medio Stat Virtus: An Alternative View Of Usury In Adam Smith’S Thinking, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
Some specific positions of Adam Smith have been, and still are, sources of problems and debates. Generally, the controversies concern apparent contradictions in the Smithian theory. An example of these puzzling contradictions in Smith is his position on usury laws:
In countries where interest is permitted, the law, in order to prevent the extortion of usury, generally fixes the highest rate which can be taken without incurring a penalty. This rate ought always to be somewhat above the lowest market price, or the price which is commonly paid for the use of money by those who can give the most …
Paratextuality And Economic Disavowal In Dave Eggers' You Shall Know Our Velocity, Sarah Brouillette
Paratextuality And Economic Disavowal In Dave Eggers' You Shall Know Our Velocity, Sarah Brouillette
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Dave Eggers' recent novel, You Shall Know Our Velocity (2002), concerns two friends who suddenly stumble upon a lot of money, feel guilty about it, and travel around the world trying to give it away. Like almost all of what Eggers is involved in producing, Velocity is profoundly self-justifying. In fact, if we follow Gerard Genette's model and understand a work's paratexts to be all the physical and social texts that attend its existence, controlling its dissemination and reception, then Velocity thematizes paratextuality and practices it, as a text about Eggers' career and his overriding concern with the …

Dynamic Price Competition, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Dynamic Price Competition, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider the model of price competition for a single buyer among many sellers in a dynamic environment. The surplus from each trade is allowed to depend on the path of previous purchases, and as a result, the model captures phenomena such as learning by doing and habit formation in consumption characterize Markovian equilibria for finite and infinite horizon versions of the model and show that the stationary infinite horizon version of the model possesses an equilibrium where all the sellers receive an equilibrium payoff equal to their marginal contribution to the social welfare.
Market Bubbles And Wasteful Avoidance: Tax And Regulatory Constraints On Short Sales, Michael R. Powers, David M. Schizer, Martin Shubik
Market Bubbles And Wasteful Avoidance: Tax And Regulatory Constraints On Short Sales, Michael R. Powers, David M. Schizer, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Although short sales make an important contribution to financial markets, this transaction faces legal constraints that do not govern long positions. In evaluating these constraints, other commentators, who are virtually all economists, have not focused rigorously enough on the precise contours of current law. Some short sale constraints are mischaracterized, while others are omitted entirely. Likewise, the existing literature neglects many strategies in which well advised investors circumvent these constraints; this avoidance may reduce the impact of short sale constraints on market prices, but may contribute to social waste in other ways. To fill these gaps in the literature, this …
On Local And Network Games, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik
On Local And Network Games, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The knowledge constraints and transactions costs imposed by geographical distance, network connections and time conspire to justify local behavior as a good approximation for global rationality. We consider a class of games to illustrate this relationship and raise some questions as to what constitutes a satisfactory solution concept.
The Truth About Income Inequality, Juliana Giraldo '03
The Truth About Income Inequality, Juliana Giraldo '03
Honors Projects
Until recently, sustaining high economic growth was thought to be the ultimate goal of development. Unfortunately, economic growth does not necessarily imply an improvement in the standards of living of all of the country's citizens, due to the unequal distribution of income. Income inequality is a problem for both developing and developed nations across the globe, but it is most evident in the great metropolises of the developing world. Much research has been done to determine the true relationship between growth and income inequality and recently, emphasis has shifted to ascertaining exactly what social and economic determinants affect the level …
The Effect Of Supply And Demand Factors On The Affordability Of Rental Housing, Jamie L. Davenport '03
The Effect Of Supply And Demand Factors On The Affordability Of Rental Housing, Jamie L. Davenport '03
Honors Projects
The difficulty of acquiring affordable rental units remains the most significant concern for low-income households. Despite the strong economic growth of the 1990s, one-third of all households spend more than the recommended thirty percent of their incomes on rental costs. These cost-burdened households face diminishing affordable rental units due to gentrification, rental rates increasing faster than real incomes, and the expiration of government subsidized rental units. The rental market is the focus of this paper since low-income households face the greatest barriers to acquiring affordable housing. This paper uses an empirical analysis of the supply and demand factors affecting affordability …
The Labor Market Of Nurses: A Cobweb Model, Nimish J. Adhia '03
The Labor Market Of Nurses: A Cobweb Model, Nimish J. Adhia '03
Honors Projects
The labor market of nurses has been plagued by reports of persistent shortages, which raise concerns about the quality of health care. The formulation of appropriate policy intervention requires knowledge of the factors shifting the demand and supply of nurses. This paper develops a model of the nursing labor market, in which the demand and supply curves are identified from the observed employment and wages using econometric techniques. It is found that the short term wage elasticity of supply is not significantly different from zero, and hence the employment trends in the nursing labor market follow a cobweb pattern, where …

U.S. Coins: Forecasting Change, Dean D. Croushore
U.S. Coins: Forecasting Change, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
Although the government annually produces about 70 new coins for every man, woman, and child, the economy’s need for coins can vary from year to year. So how do the U.S. Mint, which makes the coins, and the Federal Reserve, which distributes them, decide how many coins the economy needs? Dean Croushore highlights some facts about coins and describes how demand for change is forecast.

Comment On Bergstrom, Alexander J. Field
Comment On Bergstrom, Alexander J. Field
Economics
This comment on a 2002 article by Theodore Bergstrom in the Journal of Economic Perspectives argues that group or multilevel selection in haystack models does not require assortative mating. If the various subgroups into which the population periodically divides are sufficiently small, random variation will assure that some groups have more altruists than others, and these groups will have more surviving offspring than others. Under conditions in which the subgroups are periodically repooled into a larger population, it is possible for altruists to increase over time in the general population even though they are declining (or not increasing) at all …

A New Wprs Profiling Model For Michigan, Randall W. Eberts, Christopher J. O'Leary
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
The Worker Profiling and Reemployment Services (WPRS) system was established nationwide following the 1993 enactment of Public Law 103-152. The law requires state employment security agencies to profile new claimants for regular unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to identify those most likely to exhaust their regular benefits, and refer them to reemployment services to promote a faster transition to new employment. In November 1994, the Michigan Employment Security Commission (MESC) began profiling new UI claimants with technical assistance from the W. E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research Since WPRS profiling was introduced in Michigan much has changed, but the same model …
Earnings Momentum In International Markets, Dong Hong, Charles M. C. Lee, Bhaskaran Swaminathan
Earnings Momentum In International Markets, Dong Hong, Charles M. C. Lee, Bhaskaran Swaminathan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines the profitability of earnings momentum strategies based on analyst forecast revisions in eleven international equity markets. While analyst forecast revisions exhibit persistence in all countries, the profitability of trading strategies based on these revisions varies. Specifically, earnings momentum yields significant profits in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom, but not in Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, or Taiwan. Interestingly, price momentum exists only in those countries where earnings momentum is profitable. In general, markets with high levels of corruption (low investor protection) exhibit weak momentum. Collectively, these findings suggest that the momentum phenomenon …
