Measurement Of Information Technology Investment Payoff, Qing Wang
Measurement Of Information Technology Investment Payoff, Qing Wang
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This report evaluates the measurements of information technology investments payoff, and recommends a theoretical framework for testing the costs and benefits of Internet e-commerce investments. A number of research studies are referenced to evaluate the accuracy of the traditional, quantitative-oriented measurements and introduce a few contemporary, more qualitative-oriented alternatives. As one of the major types of information technology investments, Internet e-commerce is chosen as a case to evaluate the measurements by applying the theories generated from various research studies. Based on the case analysis, contemporary approaches are justified and adopted to establish a three-step framework of measuring Internet e-commerce investment …
Bidding For Business: The Efficacy Of Local Economic Development Incentives In A Metropolitan Area, John E. Anderson, Robert W. Wassmer
Bidding For Business: The Efficacy Of Local Economic Development Incentives In A Metropolitan Area, John E. Anderson, Robert W. Wassmer
Upjohn Press
Anderson and Wassmer examine the use and effectiveness of local economic development incentives within a specific region, the Detroit metropolitan area. The Detroit area serves as a good example, they say, because of the area's 20-plus year track record of its communities offering the gamut of economic incentives aimed at redirecting economic activity and jobs. The evidence they uncover reveals factors that drive cities not just in this Southeast Michigan area, but nationwide to offer particular types of incentives that are more or less generous than those offered by their neighbors.

Rising Wage Inequality: The 1980s Experience In Urban Labor Markets, Thomas Hyclak
Upjohn Press
Hyclak analyzes information not utilized in previous studies of wage inequality. Whereas researchers previously relied on data derived from the national labor market, Hyclak draws on data from the Area Wage Surveys (AWS), which allows him to focus on changes in the wage structure in a sample of 20 local labor markets for the period of 1974 to 1991. This source also allows him to examine changes in the structure of wages paid for some 40 different jobs found in four different occupational groups. In addition, Hyclak is able to concentrate on jobs and the skills required as the primary …

The New Rural-Urban Labor Mobility In China: Causes And Implications, Michael Seeborg, Zhenhu Jin, Yiping Zhu
The New Rural-Urban Labor Mobility In China: Causes And Implications, Michael Seeborg, Zhenhu Jin, Yiping Zhu
Scholarly Publications
As the Chinese economy reforms, a huge new populationof rural-urban migrants is transforming the urban labor force. This article explores some of the most important reasons for the emergence of the floating population in China. We argue that the neoclassical model alone is not adequate to explain the massive rural-urban internal migration underway in China. Instead, ideas drawn from both sociological theories of segmented markets and institutional economics are used to supplement the standard neoclassical explanation. We found that Chinese policy reforms in both rural and urban areas decreased the balkanization of labor markets and opened up employment opportunities for …

The following sections of this paper further examine the issues raised. Section II offers a theoretical analysis of how real GDP, unemployment, and the Fisher Effect should impact the S&P 500. Section III provides information on the expected relationship between the economy and the following major industry categories: growth, cyclical, defensive, and interest-sensitive. Section IV introduces the research design including the generalized least squares model. Section V presents the results and examines the appropriate econometric specification. Section VI concludes the study and reiterates important findings.
Informational Asymmetry And The Demand For Ipos: An Explanation Of Underpricing, Peter Karlis '00
Informational Asymmetry And The Demand For Ipos: An Explanation Of Underpricing, Peter Karlis '00
Honors Projects
There exists large informational asymmetries in the stock market, particularly in the primary market where initial public offerings are made. This paper examines the large initial gains observed in a previous study and explains them using game theory. The process of bringing an IPO to the market involves the issuing firm, the investment bank and the investors. This paper will discuss the strategic relationships that exist between these entities and why each either accepts a smaller gain or demands a risk premium based on the level of uncertainty they face. Accompanying the economic theories discussing these relationships is evidence from …
Gender And Generation In Household Labor Supply In Jordan, Mary Kawar
Gender And Generation In Household Labor Supply In Jordan, Mary Kawar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This paper examines gender and age differences in the labor supply of households in Jordan, and the impact of young women’s employment on gender and generation relations. The objective of the study is to address the issues of gender and generation as factors influencing accessibility to labor markets, and to provide a broader understanding of female employment by exploring age-related factors. Empirically, the study looks at the disproportionate workforce participation of young urban single women in Amman, Jordan, and argues that this generation of working women is evidence of a new stage in the lives of Jordanian women: single employed …
Women Street Vendors: The Road To Recognition, Monique Cohen
Women Street Vendors: The Road To Recognition, Monique Cohen
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS explores the experience of women working and organizing as urban street vendors at a time when both the volume of demand and the number of vendors are expected to grow. As municipalities seek to change laws that affect how street vendors ply their trade, it is clear that vendors must have a seat at the table. Local-level organizational efforts need to be consolidated at the national level to cement vendors’ hard-earned gains as rights in national laws and policy. A 1995 meeting in Bellagio conceived an international alliance of street vendors—StreetNet—which aims to promote the exchange …
Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The economy is slowing, as it continues to be constrained by labor shortages. Inflationary pressures are present in labor and housing markets, and consumer spending is strong. Fed policy may keep inflation from getting out of hand in the short run. In the long run, however, Massachusetts needs to speed up the growth of its skilled labor force. Minorities and low-skilled workers, who until recently had been largely unaffected by the expansion, are now benefiting from tight labor markets.

Worldwide Population Aging: Endogenous Policy Formation And Capital Market Transmissions In The Presence Of Symmetric Demographic Shocks, Mehmet Serkan Tosun
Worldwide Population Aging: Endogenous Policy Formation And Capital Market Transmissions In The Presence Of Symmetric Demographic Shocks, Mehmet Serkan Tosun
Center for Policy Research
This paper examines the transition effects of population aging in more developed regions that is also expected to occur in developing regions in the near future. We address these effects by exploring the influences of internationally mobile capital and a politically responsive fiscal policy in a two-country overlapping generations model. Our results show that the combination of capital mobility and endogenous fiscal policy play an important role in how economies respond to population aging. Capital mobility has consumption smoothing effects but endogenous fiscal policy is the key factor in creating asymmetries between countries. The interaction of the two may even …

Economic Impact Of International Students On The Dayton Local Economy For Academic Year 1997-1998, Willie Kim Kamara
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This study, the Economic Impact of Wright State University International Students on the Dayton Local Economy, examines the financial contributions of international students at both the graduate and undergraduate level to the Dayton area. The study was conducted in the fall of 1998 among 120 students drawn from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The study agrees with similar research findings. International students are a source of economic benefits in the regions where they reside. International students at Wright State University received grants and income from Dayton area residents. Consequently, it recommends that universities should take steps to recruit and retain …
The Impact Of The Ohio Lottery On Public Primary And Secondary Schools In Montgomery County, Delores Davis
The Impact Of The Ohio Lottery On Public Primary And Secondary Schools In Montgomery County, Delores Davis
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
In 1974, voters in the state of Ohio approved the institution of a lottery as a means to raise funds for their public primary and secondary schools. According to the legislative history of the Ohio Lottery, the purpose for the lottery is to provide a means for relatively poor school districts to enhance their own local tax base such that more public school funds could be produced locally to meet the special needs of their primary and secondary schools. Lottery operations have been conducted in most school districts for more than a quarter of a century. For a number of …

The Cleveland Charrette On Sustainable Urban Environments: Elevating The Stature Of Urban Redevelopment, Thomas Bier, Ziona Austrian
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The main focus of this charrette -- the stature of urban redevelopment relative to suburban "greenfield" development -- was epitomized by two Cleveland-area newspaper items (see Appendix A). One item announced an $850,000 federal grant to a suburb located at the rural fringe of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce was for construction of a road that would open 250 acres of virgin land for industrial development.
Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess
Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Changes in the economy--at the local, regional, state, and national levels--as well as technological advances have altered how and where people work, which has brought attention to the issue of workforce development. Many public and private entities, Chambers of Commerce among them, now engage in some form of workforce development. This report examines a number of such efforts to determine the “best practices” of workforce development for Chambers of Commerce. This report first considers the complex world of workforce development. The workforce consists of several distinct sub-populations: existing workers, new entrants, the unemployed, and the underemployed. Each has its own …

The Role Of Human Capital In Wealth Accumulation, Thomas Scheiding
The Role Of Human Capital In Wealth Accumulation, Thomas Scheiding
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
After an introduction to the fundamental elements of human capital theory, I will define the characteristics of general and specific human capital, and show who pays for and yields the benefits from investment in each component. I will then proceed to explain why understanding the magnitude of the rate of return in terms of wealth is imperative, both theoretically and practically. After I develop testable hypotheses, I will introduce the data set to be used, and present my model. Finally, I present the regression results, and provide a direction for future research in this area.

United States V General Dynamics: A Reappraisal, Anthony Wylie
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
The purpose of this paper is to examine the reasons behind Material Services’ acquisitions, the reasons why the Government contested the mergers, and how the Government erred in analyzing the case. We wish to show that the combination of the three coal firms—Material Services, Freeman Coal, and United Electric—occurred for reasons of economic efficiency and practicality, not based on any atavistic desire to monopolize and damage social welfare.
The Gender Wage Gap In The Economics Profession A Search In The Return To Marriage And Fertility Of Ph.D. Economists, Weiyi Shi
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
Previous researchers have found that after controlling for various determinants of economists’ earnings, there still remains an unexplained residual wage gap across genders in the economics profession. This study uses 1990 Census data to examine the return to marriage and fertility of male and female Ph.D. economists in an attempt to explain in part the residual gender wage gap in the profession. Marital status is found to have no impact on male or female economists’ earnings. Fertility does not affect male economists' earnings, but is negatively correlated with female economists' earnings. I conclude that the different returns to fertility across …

This paper will explore whether or not the Phillips curve relationship exists for the 1990s. I will attempt to estimate a Phillips curve for the past decade using data for the United States. In section two, I will explain the theory behind the Phillips curve and how the theory has evolved. In section three, I will present a literature review discussing previous research and results. Section four will present my empirical model and data. In section 5, I will present my results and discuss econometric problems such as serial correlation that may lead to biased estimates. How Do Varying Investments In Human Capital Differentially Effect Men's And Women's Income?, Dieter Haager
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
The purpose of my research is to determine if equally qualified college-educated men receive more compensation than college-educated women do after several years of experience in the labor force. The empirical model will include several variables to account for investments in human capital, which will help to establish if the individuals are equally qualified. The variables include controls for education, mobility, migration and area of residence. I am specifically looking to analyze the effects of human capital investment on income. I will also be paying particular attention to the depreciation of human capital, which may occur as a result of …

How Wages Are Set: Uncertain Political Marginal Productivity: Price Theory, Wage Theory, Agency Theory, And The Theory Of The Firm, Thomas C. Lane
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
In this paper, I will derive a new model of wage prices by starting with price theory and wage theory and then blending in the cost factors uncovered by agency theory and the theory of the firm, and Alchian's work on economic uncertainty. The final result is still theoretical and cannot be used to predict a specific workers wage, but is nevertheless more complete and realistic in detailing the process of wage determination.
The Interactions Of Eco-Labeling, Environment, And International Trade, Yi Qian
The Interactions Of Eco-Labeling, Environment, And International Trade, Yi Qian
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
A simple graphical model has been developed to examine the relationship between eco-labelling, international trade and environment. This paper analyses that labelling can possibly have adverse effect on environment when the supply of environment-friendly good is greater than the demand of the friendly good pre-labelling (fig.2). In a dynamic setting, however, this situation could be reversed by shifts of demand and supply curves of environment-friendly products (fig.3). The theoretical model predicts change of product prices, which in turn can alter international trade. In bilateral trade, the interaction with country 2 will result in an improvement in the environmental situation in …
