Estimation Of Sacrifice Ratio For The Nigerian Economy Using A Time Varying Adrl Approach, E. T. Adamgbe, M. O. Abeng, A. A. Omosola
Economic and Financial Review
Monetary policy in the last few decades had focused on creating the enabling conditions for sustainable economic growth, using the level of inflation as the pivotal tool, complemented with central banks’ independence and monetary policy transparency. However, attaining the delicate balance of achieving low inflation and optimal output, with minimal tradeoffs has been a cause for concern for policy makers. Thus, the measurement of the output loss, arising from the inflation-output tradeoff, forms the fulcrum of this study. This study estimates the sacrifice ratio using a state space methodology in an aggregate supply framework to adjust for real business cycle …
Investigating The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Naira Exchange Rate In Nigeria, A. T. Adenekan, G. K. Sanni, A. I. Itodo
Investigating The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Naira Exchange Rate In Nigeria, A. T. Adenekan, G. K. Sanni, A. I. Itodo
Economic and Financial Review
This study investigates the impact of naira-to-dollar exchange rate volatility on naira exchange rate returns in Nigeria. Using daily percentage exchange rate returns of the naira per US-Dollar, the study estimated an AR(5)-TGARCH (1,1) to examine whether there is an existence of asymmetry in the time path of the naira exchange rate volatility. The findings indicated that exchange rate volatility leads to increase in exchange rate returns (depreciation). Also, there is the presence of asymmetry in the movement of the exchange rate volatility, such that negative shocks that cause exchange rate returns to fall lead to fall in volatility by …
Institutional Quality, Financial Inclusion And Inclusive Growth: Causality Evidence From Nigeria, G. O. Olanrewaju, S. A. Tella, B. A. Adesoye
Institutional Quality, Financial Inclusion And Inclusive Growth: Causality Evidence From Nigeria, G. O. Olanrewaju, S. A. Tella, B. A. Adesoye
Economic and Financial Review
The study examines the causal interactions among the institutional, financial and inclusive growth variables by employing Toda-Yamamoto (TY) Granger non-causality test within the augmented VAR framework. Annual time series, data from 1998 to 2017, were used. The TY analysis showed that all the variables, with the exception of financial inclusion index, Granger-caused inclusive growth, but without any evidence of feedback. However, a bidirectional causal relationship was found between inclusive finance and the interaction of institutional quality and financial inclusion. Thus, the null hypothesis of block exogeneity can be refuted when real GDP per person employed (RGDPE) is taken as the …
Computation Of The Real Effective Exchange Rate (Reer) Using The Bank For International Settlement (Bis) Methodology, M. Nakorji, E. A. Udeaja, F. U. Ismail, S. T. Zimboh, T. O. Obiezue, O. C. Asuzu
Computation Of The Real Effective Exchange Rate (Reer) Using The Bank For International Settlement (Bis) Methodology, M. Nakorji, E. A. Udeaja, F. U. Ismail, S. T. Zimboh, T. O. Obiezue, O. C. Asuzu
Economic and Financial Review
The importance of REER and its computation prompted this study to re-estimate the REER for Nigeria, using the Bank for International Settlement (BIS) methodology. The methodology incorporates recent developments in global trade by employing timevarying trade weighting patterns, highlights the effect of third market competitors, and provides a more comprehensive approach to capturing the effects of bilateral exchange rates through the inclusion of double export weights. The method employed the weighing scheme adopted by Turner and Van’t dack (1993) which has its theoretical underpinnings in Armington (1969). The data utilised was monthly series from October 2011 to December 2016 with …
The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng
The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng
Economic and Financial Review
Exchange rate exposure has been identified in the literature as one of the standard metrics for measuring the performance of stock returns in both advanced and developing economies. This study adopts the capital market approach in investigating the effects of exchange rate exposure on stock returns in Nigeria, using monthly data spanning 2009 to 2018. The findings show that three sector stock returns, namely the NSE30, pension and banking indices, were significantly vulnerable to nominal effective exchange rate and bilateral exchange rates shocks. The non-significance of energy sector, proxied by the oil and gas, to exchange rate risk, is puzzling, …
The Central Bank Balance Sheet As A Tool For Monetary Policy: Evidence From Nigeria, E. U. Kure, O. O. Mbutor, U. A. Rotimi, Y. Adamu
The Central Bank Balance Sheet As A Tool For Monetary Policy: Evidence From Nigeria, E. U. Kure, O. O. Mbutor, U. A. Rotimi, Y. Adamu
Economic and Financial Review
The study examined the impact of the Central bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) balance sheet on the growth of private sector credit, economic growth and price stability during the period 2006-2017. Balance sheet indicators used were total assets of the CBN and proxy for asset distribution. Employing a vector autoregressive (VAR) model, the study found balance sheet policies to be effective in reducing cost of credit, increase in bank lending, economic activities and a decline in inflation. However, the effects favour asset dispersion (credit easing) against growth in assets (quantitative easing), implying that the Bank can, in the short- to medium-term, …
Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe
Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe
Economic and Financial Review
Fiscal multipliers are important tools for macroeconomic projections and policy design. However, very little is known about the size in developing countries, given the complexity of their estimation. The unavailability of reliable high frequency data and structural characteristics of these countries also make the estimation of fiscal multipliers difficult, in such countries. This paper estimated fiscal multipliers associated with government spending and tax-related revenue for Nigeria using quarterly data, spanning 1985: Q1 to 2015 Q4. The structural vector autoregression (SVAR) methodology suggested by Blanchard and Perotti (2002) was utilised in the model. The SVAR framework applied followed the approach by …
Current Account Balance And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, G. K. Sanni, A. U. Musa, Z. Sani
Current Account Balance And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, G. K. Sanni, A. U. Musa, Z. Sani
Economic and Financial Review
This study examined the relationship between current account balance and economic growth in Nigeria. Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Testing methodology was employed to investigate the relationship, using annual data spanning from 1970 – 2016. The study found a long-run relationship between the current account balance, the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth and bilateral real exchange rate in Nigeria. The positive relationship between real GDP growth and the current account balance implies that increase in real GDP growth would lead to an improvement in the current account balance. However, the study found a negative relationship between real exchange …
Assessing Systemic Risk In The Nigerian Interbank Money Market, M. Nakorji, P. Ekeocha, C. Nwosu, P. Obikaonu
Assessing Systemic Risk In The Nigerian Interbank Money Market, M. Nakorji, P. Ekeocha, C. Nwosu, P. Obikaonu
Economic and Financial Review
The interbank market is an important platform for strengthening financial integration. It also represents a medium for risk sharing among banks through the linkages and common exposures. Exposure between banks leads to a direct asset relation through borrowing from each other at the interbank market while banks are associated indirectly through ownership and sharing of similar portfolio exposures, that connects them, through a web of transaction network. The paper analysed the systemic risk implied in the Nigerian interbank network, based on various network measures using data on individual banks' bilateral exposures. The findings showed that few banks featured prominently in …
Macroeconomic Instability Index And Threshold For The Nigerian Economy, B. A. G. Amoo, J. K. Achua, N. P. Audu, B. Hamma
Macroeconomic Instability Index And Threshold For The Nigerian Economy, B. A. G. Amoo, J. K. Achua, N. P. Audu, B. Hamma
Economic and Financial Review
The paper employed statistical algorithms, factor analysis and threshold autoregressive models to address the gaps in management of macroeconomic instability in Nigeria. Using data spanning 2010q1 to 2017q2, the findings showed that the values of macroeconomic instability index (MII) fluctuated between 0.316 and 0.609, with a threshold of 0.461. This showed an inverse relationship between macroeconomic instability and economic growth. This framework could serve as a mechanism to gauge early warning signal of instability in Nigeria.
Unofficial Dollarisation And Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Y. Adamu
Unofficial Dollarisation And Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Y. Adamu
Economic and Financial Review
This paper examined the impact of dollarisation on monetary policy in Nigeria, using monthly data spanning 2002 to 2016. The paper adopted the conventional IMF proxy for dollarisation and traced its reactions to changing monetary policy stance. Using the vector autoregression (VAR) model and interbank rate as an indicator of monetary policy stance, the results showed that the size of dollarisation could influence the outcome of monetary policy, though the impact was small. This was evident from the output equations, that inflation did not respond in the first month and responded negatively in the second month. However, from the third …
Determinants Of Nigeria's External Sector Competitiveness, O. Duke, M. Yakub, M. Nakorji, B. Gaiya, F. Isma'il, Z. Sani, S. Zimboh, T. Obiezue, O. Asuzu, V. Aliyu
Determinants Of Nigeria's External Sector Competitiveness, O. Duke, M. Yakub, M. Nakorji, B. Gaiya, F. Isma'il, Z. Sani, S. Zimboh, T. Obiezue, O. Asuzu, V. Aliyu
Economic and Financial Review
The study investigated the determinants of Nigeria's external competitiveness, with a view to providing sound policy prescriptions on ways to improve competitiveness. The study employed an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, using monthly data spanning 2008 to 2016 to determine the short- and long-run relationships among some selected macroeconomic variables. These included real effective exchange rate, exports, productivity, crude oil price, capital flow and consumer price index. The results from the short-run analysis revealed that productivity, proxied by government expenditure, and crude oil price were found to be the major determinants of external sector competitiveness in Nigeria, while CPI was …

Savings, Net Foreign Assets And Current Accounts Dynamics In Subsaharan Africa, A. I. Adeleke, W. Ohemeng, K. Ofori-Boateng
Economic and Financial Review
A profile of the current account balance in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) shows that many countries in the region have consistently experienced current account deficits, dwindling savings and diminishing net foreign assets. These macroeconomic variables convey important information to economic agents about the health of a nation. The relationships among these three important variables in terms of short-run and long-run dynamics are cloudy in the literature. Therefore, this study examined the long-run and short-run dynamics of savings, net foreign assets and current account balance in subSaharan Africa. Utilising panel econometric techniques with annual data from 38 countries in SSA for the …

Determination Of Optimal Foreign Exchange Reserves For Nigeria, M. Tule, E. Egbuna,, S. Abdusalam, A. Oduyemi
Economic and Financial Review
The study examined the optimal level of international reserves for Nigeria that is capable of absorbing a shock similar to that experienced during the 2007/2009 Global economic crisis. Using, generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH), vector autoregressive (VAR) estimation techniques and normalised Johansen cointegrated equation, and setting the maximum and minimum output losses for the entire period, the study found a positive relationship between the odds of default on sovereign debt and fiscal deficit to GDP ratio, short-term debt to reserves ratio and volatility in portfolio investments. In minimising the Bank's cost of holding reserves, the study found that the Nigerian …

Interest Rate Dynamics And Real Output Behaviour In Nigeria: A Simulation Analysis, S. Rapu, G. Sanni, D. Penzin, N. Nkang, P. Golit, H. Okafor, E. Ibi
Economic and Financial Review
The declining output growth observed from the second quarter of 2014, which led to calls for a more expansionary monetary policy despite rising inflationary pressure, necessitated a reassessment of the impact of interest rate on real output growth in Nigeria. Using a Bayesian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) model and quarterly data from 2000:Q4 to 2015:Q3, the effect of monetary policy transmission (interest rate dynamics) on real output performance was estimated. Although results of the simulation analysis were somewhat mixed, those of the impulse response functions indicated that positive shocks to monetary policy rate (MPR) produced a negative and small impact on …
Cost Of Governance And Fiscal Deficit In Nigeria: Evidence From State Government Data, P. Ekeocha, A. Ikenna-Ononugbo
Cost Of Governance And Fiscal Deficit In Nigeria: Evidence From State Government Data, P. Ekeocha, A. Ikenna-Ononugbo
Economic and Financial Review
Fiscal deficit has remained a predominant occurrence at both the Federal and state government levels, and this has become a source of concern for economic managers. At the individual state level, a quarter of the state governments consistently ran deficit for more than six consecutive years, from the period 2007 to 2014. More importantly, the combined overall fiscal balance of the state governments has resulted frequently in deficit in the past two decades. Fiscal deficit is not bad in itself, but most of the state governments are running fiscal deficit to sustain recurrent expenses, rather than infrastructure development. Available studies …

Non-Oil Revenue Buoyancy And Elasticity: Implications For Revenue Generation In Nigeria, B. Gaiya, A.A. Ononugbo-Ikenna, K. Ajala
Economic and Financial Review
The paper employs annual time series data on real government tax revenue components from 1981-2014 to endogenously determine the level of non-oil revenue buoyancy and elasticity and its implication for revenue generation in Nigeria. A partitioning approach to determining tax buoyancy and elasticity is employed to address these objectives. The study found that with the exception of the Company Income Tax, an inelastic tax structure exists in Nigeria for the period under review. The proxy bases had similar results in terms of their responsiveness to the tax system. There were also evidences that the discretionary measures taken during the study …
Economic Growth, Poverty And Income Inequality Matrix In Nigeria: A Further Investigation, H. O. Okafor
Economic Growth, Poverty And Income Inequality Matrix In Nigeria: A Further Investigation, H. O. Okafor
Economic and Financial Review
This paper examined the existing relationship among economic growth, poverty and income inequality in Nigeria. Using the Vector Auto-regressive (VAR) model and the Engle-Granger technique to test for the causality existing among the variables, the results revealed that economic growth had no impact on poverty reduction and income distribution in Nigeria due its non-inclusive nature. There was, however, evidence of a unidirectional causality, running from income inequality to increased poverty. This implied that inequality would lead to increase in poverty in Nigeria. Therefore, the paper recommended that government should develop stronger economic institutions that are capable of reorganising the productive …

Empirical Estimation Of Optimal International Reserves For Nigeria: The Sudden Stop Model, G.K. Sanni, T.S. Olusegun, Z. Sani
Economic and Financial Review
The study examined the issue of optimum external reserves for Nigeria during 2010 - 2014, using Jeanne and Ranciere (2006) and Goncalves (2007) sudden stop model approach. The study showed that resident foreign currency deposit accounted for over 90 per cent of the total foreign currency deposit, while non-resident foreign currency deposit accounted for the remaining. The result of the model suggested that external reserves were adequate in 2010 but beyond that period, it was far below optimal level. On average, the optimum external reserves were around 15.7 per cent of GDP in the past four years, translating to US$54.52 …

The Impact Of Lending Rate On The Manufacturing Sector In Nigeria, D.B. Akpan, D.J. Yilkudi, D. C. Opiah
Economic and Financial Review
The study investigates the impact of lending rate on output of the manufacturing subsector using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and annual data from 1981- 2014. The empirical results indicated that high lending rate had negative impact on manufacturing output in the long-run. This suggests that increase in lending rate undermines manufacturing output, thus retarding growth in the real sector. Specifically, the estimates revealed that a 1.0 per cent increase in lending rate reduces manufacturing output by 0.03 per cent. The study, therefore, recommends the implementation of investment friendly policies that narrows the lending rate by the deposit money …
