The Term Structure Of Interest Rates In Australia : An Application Of Long Run Structural Modelling, Vicky Shimmings

The term structure of interest rates in Australia, using data of different types as well as frequencies covering the period 1991 (11) to 2000 (9), is investigated using a relatively new modelling strategy previously untested on Australian interest rate data. Developed by Pesaran & Shin (1997), this strategy incorporates long-run structural relationships in an otherwise unrestricted vector autoregression model (VAR). The long-run relationships included in the model are based on the Expectations Theory of the term structure. This model is then subjected to Granger-causality, generalised variance decompositions, generalised impulse response and persistence profile analysis, in the context of a vector …

Interdependency among sectors is the essential characteristic of modem production. This experience has suggested the importance of studying sectoral interdependence. One of the aims of this study is to estimate and measure the intersectoral output and employment linkages in the Malaysian economy by employing the input-output analysis which was introduced by Leontief and subsequently developed by various economists. The Annual Report contains details of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) financial activities during the 1999 accounting year in accordance with statutory requirement. During the period under review, the Bank carried out its core functions under CBN Decree No. 24, 1991, and the Banks and Other Financial Institutions (BOFI Decree No. 25, 1991). The CBN also performed developmental and technical assistance roles to contribute to economic development and capacity building. In 1999, the CBN carried out core functions, including issuance of currency notes and coins, maintaining Nigeria's external reserves, and promoting monetary stability. This article assesses the ability of elected officials to control public policy as implemented by public/private hybrid organizations, specifically, government venture capital funds. The study reveals greater control over OPIC investment funds than Enterprise Funds despite the existence of more traditional administrative tools of control for Enterprise Funds. This finding suggests that the regulatory infrastructure for hybrid organizations is more determinative of control than the existence (or lack) of traditional administrative control tools. Thus the challenge of hybrid government centers on the development of regulation as a substitute for administration.

How Useful Are Forecasts Of Corporate Profits, Dean D. Croushore

If forecasters predict higher earnings for corporations, the stock market will rise. Stock prices will drop with a forecast of lower earnings. But are such forecasts on the money? Dean Croushore uses data from the Survey of Professional Forecasters to check the accuracy of forecasts of corporate profits. The results show that, despite the volatility of corporate profits, the forecasts are rational.

For most of the 1990s, forecasters have been predicting an upturn in inflation. Yet, over that same period, the United States has experienced stable or declining inflation. Why have forecasts been at odds with reality? And why does it matter? In this article, Dean Croushore considers some answers to these questions and explains why inflation is the economic surprise of the decade.

Bulgaria's economy began a deep and prolonged collapse in 1989, exactly one hundred years after the noted Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov published his stirring novel opposing the tyranny of the Ottomans and warning of the mistaken road of socialism. The 1989 collapse was partially a reflection of the external political upheavals among Bulgaria's trading partners in Eastern Europe, which were rejecting socialist principles. But it was also a reflection of the weaknesses imbedded in the economy after 30 years of central planning. The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the relationship between budget deficits and private investment and to contribute to the discussion of whether or not such a relationship exists. We test the robustness of Cebula's (1985) model by extending the time period, by testing the model using a proxy for one of the variables, and by de-trending the variables.

In 1997, Nigeria experienced its third consecutive year of macroeconomic stability, resulting in modest improvement in domestic output growth and a persistently low inflation rate. The balance of payments position showed a modest surplus, and significant success was achieved in reducing domestic liquidity growth. Domestic output expanded further due to increased agricultural output and crude petroleum production, while the inflation rate declined further. Domestic output, measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 3.8% in 1997, as against the average growth rate of 2.3% in the preceding three years. Financial data is compiled from documents like balance sheets and financial statements, which are designed for legal and administrative purposes rather than economic analysis. The Financial Statistics Office compiles the analytical CBN balance sheet without major reclassifications or rearrangements. However, due to problems with imprecise definitions, improper classification, inadequate sectorization, inaccuracies, irregular valuation procedures, and errors in data compilation, major revisions were made. The Computer Services Department generates summary and detailed analytical balance sheets based on the end-month BANKOS 302 of the CBN, Lagos branch. The consolidation of accounts of monetary authorities and deposit money banks produces monetary survey accounts. …
