The Bronx, despite its proximity to the other boroughs of New York City, has the highest poverty rates among them. Using data from 2010 to 2022, this study examines the socioeconomic disparities between the Bronx and Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Key indicators analyzed include poverty levels, SNAP benefits, unemployment rates, median income, educational attainment, homeownership rates, business creation, and GDP per capita. Our study reveals that the Bronx has the highest poverty, unemployment, and SNAP benefit dependency rates, lower educational attainment, and the lowest median income and homeownership rates. Housing is a basic need. The National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP), Land Use Planning Community of Practice held a virtual forum in December 2021 on the national housing crisis. The session revealed common challenges communities face when addressing these issues locally. As a follow-up to that session, this paper summarizes Extension perspectives on community housing issues discussed during the session, reviews the literature on Extension programs related to housing, and makes the case for a national peer learning and communications network to address these difficult and urgent community housing challenges.

In this new era of globalisation, all countries including Indonesia are targeting poverty alleviation to help people achieve welfare. Furthermore, this study empirically examines the impact of government spending, FDI, economic growth, and industrial growth on poverty. This research uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method. The data used is time series data from 1972 to 2021 obtained from the World Development Indicator website. The findings of the ARDL estimation show that government spending and industrial growth increase household income, both in the long-run and the short-run. Do Digital Payments Spur Gst Revenue: Indian Experience, Surender Kumar

This paper measures the effect of digital payments on enhancing goods and services tax (GST) revenue in India using monthly time-series information on tax collections and digital payments. By employing an autoregressive distributed lag cointegration framework, we find that the GST elasticity concerning digital transactions is about 0.54. The implication is that a one-standard-deviation increase in the value of digital transactions spurs GST revenue of about INR 62 billion, and a one-standard-deviation increase in index of industrial production (IIP) enhances GST revenue by about INR 8 to 12 billion. Indonesia finds tax amnesty as a reliable funding alternative to develop a sustainable economy. Since 1964, Indonesia has implemented five tax amnesty programs. The latest two programs would offer lower amnesty compensation rates if taxpayers repatriated offshore assets back to Indonesia. However, the tax amnesty repatriation policy merely contributed minimal amounts of repatriated assets and low number of participants. Poor entrepreneurs must frequently choose between business investment and children’s education. To examine this trade-off, we exploit experimental variation in short-run microenterprise growth among a sample of Indian households and track children’s education and business outcomes over eleven years. Treated households, who experience higher initial microenterprise growth, invest more in education and are one-third more likely to send children to college. However, only literate households experience child schooling gains and their enterprises stagnate in the long-run. In contrast, illiterate treatment households experience long-run business gains but declines in children’s education. Our findings suggest that microenterprise growth has the potential to …

To examine the main drivers of firm growth, we estimated a model integrating firm-level, industry-specific as well as country-level determinants, aiming at a comprehensive explanation of firm growth. We used a large dataset of European firms for the 2005–2017 period and combined Amadeus firm-level data with macroeconomic variables and multidimensional measures of institutional framework, based on a range of sources. Using different panel regression model specifications, we found the most consistent relationships for firm-level determinants. Among country-level determinants, infrastructure quality, inward FDI, natural resources, and inequality show a consistently positive and significant relation with firm growth.

Despite the wide body of research that supports the benefits of education in reducing poverty and empowering individuals, women around the world continue to face significant barriers to schooling. This paper examines key social norms and aspects of poverty hindering the path to education for girls and women, proposing the use of cash transfers to promote education worldwide. Case studies of two different cash transfer programs, PROGRESA in Mexico and SCTP in Malawi, are evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in providing opportunities for schooling and promoting women's empowerment.

This study employs computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the effect of increase in value added tax (VAT), from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent, on import demand and sectoral output in Nigeria. The study uses 2020 as the base year for the data analysis. The results show that increase in VAT affects import demand negatively, based on import penetration ratios, with mixed effect across six sectors. The implication of the result is that the VAT policy discourage consumption of foreign products, and constitute excess burden to consumers of such products in Nigeria. The study examines the impact of trade liberalization and non-oil exports on economic growth in Nigeria from 1986 to 2021. The study utilizes an autoregressive distributed lag model and found the combined effect of trade liberalization and non-oil exports to be positive and statistical significant. While trade liberalization alone may have negative consequences, its synergy with a robust non-oil export can drive sustainable economic growth. The study recommends that strategies to enhance non-oil exports should be encouraged to support the effectiveness of trade liberalization in promoting growth.

This paper investigates the time it would take for the FTSE-100 index to reach its post-COVID-19 peak. The paper utilises an exponential generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (EGARCH) model that accounts for leverage effect and asymmetries. The preferred models amongst competing variants was the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA)-EGARCH(2,1) specification and was used to predict daily FTSE-100 data from 5th January 2000 to 21st June 2024. The empirical exercise showed that the COVID-19-induced financial crisis negatively affected the United Kingdom’s stock market performance. The study employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and impulse response function (IRF) to determine the extent and response of financial inclusion and development to fiscal policy changes in Nigeria. This paper investigates the role of capital flows both from internal and external sources on economic growth, as well as the main social obstacle factor to growth, corruption. The paper attains this by conducting panel data analysis for Southeast and East Asian countries from 2005-2022. Sources of capital flows are divided into external sources, i.e. foreign direct investment (FDI) and personal remittance, and internal sources, i.e. domestic bank credit and stock market capitalization. This paper investigates the impact of hosting “mega events” such as the Olympics on a country’s GDP growth. The study incorporates information on the country’s factors of economic development. Spillovers will be modeled through the state of the global economy by using controls such as countries that did not host mega events. The results show that countries that host the Olympics do not see any extra GDP growth than those that did not host an event.
