Factors Affecting Career Advancement Among Young School Leavers, Mei Mei Lim

This study examines the patterns of career advancement and factors affecting an individual's career advancement. Career advancement is measured using occupational mobility and income mobility. The analyses are based on 1702 young school leavers data for whom are available from the "Transition from School to Work" study, which was carried out between 1989 and 1996. It is common to change occupation or employer or both in the early stages of the career. For every two individuals, one of them changes jobs within the seven years studied. Individuals in the professional group are the least likely to change occupation and the …

Adapting The System Of Continuing Vocational Education For The 3rd Industrial Revolution: Experiences From The Swedish Pilot Project With Ave, Mats Lindell
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
This paper analyses problems associated with adapting the system of continuing vocational education (CVT) to the rapidly changing Swedish labour market. The key question asked in the paper is how CVT is going to adapt to a labour market characterised by a growing ITeconomy. The paper also presents empirical data from the pilot project in Sweden called Advanced Vocational Education. AVE is a new form of post-secondary education designed to meet changing technology and skill requirements. The paper concludes that AVE is a step in the right direction in decreasing the gap between demand and supply.

The paper highlights on interstate cooperation and educational development in Nigeria. Education is a major instrument for economic and social development. The process of allocating resources to the sector vis-a-vis other sectors depends again on the political priorities of the decision makers. Whether or not different states, which belong to the same ideological camp, can and will cooperate in the field of education in future is not certain. The empirical analysis of existing facts have further strengthened the hypothesis that there exists a structural and cause - effect relationship between education and other aspects of the social structure. Marital Status And Full-Time/Part-Time Work Status In Child Care Choices, Rachel Connelly, Jean Kimmel

Using recent SIPP data, we estimate two econometric models to study the differences in the effect of child care costs on employment status and differences in the mode of child care used controlling for employment status. For both married and single women, full-time employment is more elastic with respect to changes in the price of child care than part-time employment and employment elasticities are larger for single than married mothers. In the model of child care modal choice, we find that an increased probability of full-time employment is associated with an increase in the use of center care and a …

Students and their families expend much time, effort and money researching which colleges or universities will best suit the students' needs. Simultaneously, institutions desire to find the cohort of students who will succeed at their schools. Recently, faced with more stringent economic constraints, schools are not only seeking students likely to succeed, but are more aware of the financial burden placed on schools if attrition is high. Many governments have turned to private investors, especially Independent Power Producers (IPPs), to provide some or all of the nation's power requirements. The main reasons for this are: a) to eliminate the financial burden of the government, b) to promote competition in the generation sector to improve operating efficiency and reduce generating cost, and c) to transfer power generation technology, especially in the developing nations, at a rapid pace. In line with world trends, the Malaysian government, in 1993, deregulated its power generation sector. This was done in order to overcome the shortage of installed capacity due to an increase …

Alpert and Woodbury present a comprehensive set of explorations into the impacts that the provision of various types of employee benefits (or lack thereof) have on labor markets. And while there are, as the editors point out, substantial differences between the employee benefits systems of Canada and the U.S., these differences showcase the impacts of specific policies related to employee benefits on labor markets.

Will The Real Adam Smith Please Stand Up?: Teaching Social Economics In The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight

Part of the difficulty of introducing social economics into the principles course is the perception that social economics is anathema to mainstream economics. As noted by Warren Samuels, however, "neoclassical economics is already a form of social economics" despite its "pretensions of methodological individualism and value-neutrality". Heilbroner also makes the case that the " ... the preponderance of great economists were aware of economics as explanation systems of particular socio-economic formations." Like it or not, economists err in omitting from their models what McCloskey calls "S" variables--variables representing the "social embeddedness" of values which direct human choices.

Joseph Schumpeter, the Austrian born economist and social historian who spent a major part of his academic career at Harvard, was a cogent observer of how societies develop. His Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy is still considered a classic. Schumpeter spoke of "perennial gales of creative destruction" (often technological) that shock societies and force change. The advent of electricity and the coming of the automobile illustrate technologies that created new power arrangements and destroyed or modified existing institutions. Higher education is now in the midst of a Schumpeterian "gale of creative destruction"--a revolution, many say. After almost 150 years of reliance …

Ballou and Podgursky offer solid economic analysis on issues surrounding the debate over whether increasing salaries for teachers leads to a more qualified teaching workforce. The authors find little evidence to support the link between increased salaries and teacher quality, then address two questions: (1) What went wrong? and (2) Which reforms are likely to meet with increased success?
