This study examines challenges faced by subsistence women entrepreneurs during COVID-19, the crisis of 2020, and their resilience in addressing the circumstances. The results of qualitative interviews with 13 subsistence marketplace women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh are presented in this article. In the current study, two themes are found to best capture the experiences and resilience of women business owners in the subsistence marketplaces. Furthermore, the study provides important insights from informant interviews, showing how women business owners navigate their operations during a pandemic. An Analysis Of Wage Determinants And Gender Wage Inequality In The Daily Labor Market Of Bangladesh: A Quantile Regression Approach, Al Mamun

Arab Economic and Business Journal

This study investigates wage determination and gender-based wage disparities in Bangladesh's daily labor market using HIES 2010 and 2016 datasets and OLS and Quantile Regression methods. Results reveal a substantial gender wage gap, with females earning 22.9% less than males in 2010, increasing to 62.2% in 2016. The gap lessens across quantiles, indicating a sticky floor effect in both years. Various determinants, including human capital and social factors, affect wages differently. Policy implications underscore the need for equal pay advocacy, shared familial responsibilities, and targeted interventions to rectify gender-based wage disparities. Global supply chains have vulnerabilities, and these escalate in crisis times like pandemics or wars. Digital twinning of supply chains can provide early alerts and timely interventions. We examined three companies in different industries using Digital Twin (DT) technology to improve their supply chain performance. We found that while DT successfully enhanced performance indicators, the dollar and time costs were significant, creating barriers to wider DT adoption. We conclude by outlining the positives and negatives of implementing Digital Twins in global supply chains.

A 2024 book titled “How Sanctions Work, Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare” by Narges Bajoghli, Vali Nasr, Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, and Ali Vaez argues that sanctions have had no impact on the behavior of the Islamic Republic in Iran (IR hereafter) and have instead inflicted pain on the ordinary Iranians. While the book does offer a useful description of the evolution of the sanctions against the IR, it fails in its analysis and conclusions.

More and more, economic research makes uses of administrative panel data, which provide long time-series of highly accurate data, but lack some of the supplemental questions found in surveys. I use data from the Current Population Survey, which includes a short panel, to test whether these supplemental survey questions intrinsically contain unique information or serve as proxies for information that can also be gleaned from panel data. In particular, I forecast an individual worker's future unemployment status with and without information on each individual's recent past, and decompose the variance of the predictions in each case.

We use an advanced model of the global economy to consider a set of scenarios consistent with the proposal to impose a minimum 60% tariff against Chinese imports and blanket minimum 10% tariff against all other US imports. The model’s structure, which includes imperfect competition in increasing-returns industries, is documented in Balistreri, Böhringer, and Rutherford (2024). The basis for the tariff rates is a proposal from former President Donald Trump (see Wolff 2024). We consider these scenarios with and without symmetric retaliation by our trade partners. Most rural Nebraskans are somewhat or very concerned about their household’s cost of living, their household income, and their household’s financial situation. This was particularly true for certain groups, including persons with lower household incomes, younger persons, and persons with construction, installation, or maintenance occupations.

When asked about the impacts of international trade, most rural Nebraskans think it is good for Nebraska’s economy. Residents of the Panhandle are the regional group least likely to think trade is good for the state’s economy.
