The impact of trauma has varying effects on both clients and helping professionals ranging from negative responses (e.g. secondary traumatic stress [STS], compassion fatigue, and burnout) to positive responses (e.g. vicarious posttraumatic growth [VPTG], vicarious resilience, and compassion satisfaction [CS]). Vicarious posttraumatic growth is the experience of growth as a result of indirect trauma exposure. Scholars have exclusively investigated VPTG using the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI); a measure of the extent an individual experiences growth experienced after trauma. Emotion regulation is an important variable to support students’ optimal development. Students with high emotion regulation tend to minimize their aggressive behavior. However, some students have difficulty in regulating their emotions. Previous studies show that attachment and self-esteem influence emotion regulation. This study aims to examine the effect of the two variables on emotion regulation of students. 150 randomly selected students were involved in the study. Multiple linear regression was applied to analyze the research data. The results showed that there was a significant effect of attachments and self-esteem on emotion regulation. This study uses a medical center in Taiwan as an example to analyze medical staff’s emotional exhaustion by independent sample t test and analysis of variance. Eight out of ten demographic variables are considered as essential variables to influence emotional exhaustion excluding respondents reporting events in the past 12 months and job status. The results show that female employees and employees who are not supervisors/managers tend to have higher burnout. Employees whose ages are 21–30, 31–40, and 41–50 years old also have a higher degree of fatigue. In addition, nurses are more stressful than the others in this medical center. …

Objective: The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to examine sex as a moderator of the efficacy of a brief, web-based personalized feedback intervention (eCHECKUP TO GO) on decreasing cognitive risk factors for alcohol use, increasing protective behavioral strategies, and reducing alcohol use among high school seniors. Method: Participants (n = 311) were high school seniors randomized by class period to the eCHECKUP TO GO intervention or assessment-only control group. Participants completed online surveys at baseline and 30-day follow-up (91.0%; n = 283). Families of children with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often experience emotional burden related to the sudden onset, intensity, and duration of the recovery process. Family support can improve outcomes; however, parents and siblings of students with TBI often do not receive the help they need, which can impede the injured child’s recovery. This qualitative study involved focus groups with school psychologists who have worked with students with TBIs. The in-home modality is an area of counseling that has received minimal research, yet the need to serve clients within their home continues. This case-study example demonstrates an ethical dilemma that can arise relating to multicultural considerations. Frame and Williams’ (2005) Multicultural Ethical Decision-Making Model was used as the method to assess the situation and the following ethical dilemma was identified: conducting counseling sessions during religious prayer times. To clarify values within the clinical supervision triad related to multicultural identities, the Heuristic Model of Non-Oppressive Interpersonal Development (Inman & DeBoer Kreider, 2013) was also used.

This article examines the role managed care organizations (MCOs) have in the counseling profession. Ethical dilemmas present in working with MCOs are discussed as they apply to clinical practice and clinical decision making. Implications and potential solutions are explored, as well as a discussion on the limitations of current research and prospective future research suggestions on the effect MCOs have on the counseling profession. Through increasing the strength and understanding of counselor-in-training professional identity development, the profession as a whole gains credibility and a place within mental health treatment. This study sought to determine CACREP’s impact on professional identity development of counselors-in-training. Results indicate that individuals who attended a CACREP-accredited Master’s program had significantly higher overall scores on the Professional Identity Scale in Counseling (PISC) (Woo & Henfield, 2015), but not in all subscales. Implications support continued promotion of CACREP involvement in the training of counselors.

In this study, we explored transitional dynamics (i.e., movement patterns between six common supervision events) of the supervision process using transcripts of 20 actual supervision sessions in naturalistic settings. Specifically, we first proposed an events-based framework to conceptualize the supervision process. We then provided a step-by-step protocol to perform Markov chain analysis, which is an innovative and useful means to study ongoing processes. Next, we identified transitional dynamics of the entire sample and then detected statistically different verbal interactional patterns for the dyads with longer or shorter trainee experience. Doctoral programs in counselor education are believed to be developing effective researchers, yet there are few studies that examine the research constructs within counselor educator programs. The purpose of this study is to investigate a national sample of doctoral counselor education students’ research quality by measuring three constructs: 1) research self-efficacy, 2) interest in research and 3) research mentoring. A cross-sectional, correlational research design was used to test if doctoral students programs could predict these constructs. Also, the study investigated whether students’ research practices, (e.g., publishing refereed journal articles, et al.) correlated with their response levels.

Due to the high prevalence of traumatic events, counselors are likely to have clients with histories of trauma. Counselors need to be prepared to work with trauma-related issues. The Council of Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs supports the importance of trauma education in the 2016 CACREP standards. Due to the 60 credit hour requirement of counselor training programs, the authors suggest that counselor educators integrate trauma education throughout Counselor Education curricula as opposed to creating a whole course. We used transcendental phenomenology to examine the gatekeeping experiences of 15 doctoral students at three programmatic levels. Findings and implications related to two primary themes, (a) precarious positions and power and (b) developing a gatekeeper identity, are discussed.

While school counselors work with students in special education, little research describes their work with African American students in or at risk of special education or the phenomenon of disproportionality of African American students in special education. This phenomenological study explored the experiences and perceptions of eight high school counselors with African American students in special education and disproportionality. The researcher identified three themes: (a) Dis-Regard, (b) separate worlds and (c) professional knowledge. Intentional strategies to introduce counselors to the concept of disproportionality and its antecedents may mitigate processes that potentially lead to overrepresentation of African Americans in special education.

This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of felt sense among six graduate counseling students. Each participant engaged in two semi-structured interviews and completed a journal of felt sense experiences. A Hermeneutic phenomenological method was used to analyze interview transcripts and journals. Findings, as well as implications for counselor education, supervision, and counseling practice, are discussed.

The intersection of personal and professional values in relation to client referrals may cause uncertainty and confusion among counseling students. Current literature on this topic demonstrates a lack of agreement exists among student counselors about how to navigate the referral process, especially as it relates to making decisions about when to refer (Author, 2017). This content analysis examines what student counselors (N=104) perceive as critical areas of knowledge, points of confusion, and suggestions for training on ethical referrals. Emergent themes and implications for counselor education and future research are discussed.

Factors Influencing Publication Rates Among Counselor Educators, Sean Newhart, Patrick R. Mullen, Ashley J. Blount, W. Bryce Hagedorn

Factors influencing publication rates were examined among a simple random sample of 257 counselor educators. The factors of: a) gender, b) experience as a counselor educator, c) faculty rank, and d) working in a research institution predicted peer-reviewed publication rates in the counselor educator sample, with a large effect size. Additional results, limitations of the investigation, areas for future research, and implications for counselor educators are discussed.
