Focus is a critical component in solution focused brief therapy (SFBT; de Shazer et al., 1986), yet little research has been conducted on how SFBT therapists utilize the clients’ focus on their awareness of needs to relationally build solutions (Reiter & Chenail, 2016). To address this gap, we reviewed the notion of utilizing clients’ focus in SFBT conceptually and presented the results of our discovery-oriented qualitative study of a classic training case conducted by one of SFBT’s co-developers, Insoo Kim Berg (1994). Concussions are one of the most discussed health concerns at all levels of sport. While much of this discussion focuses on football and the National Football League (NFL), there is growing awareness in the sport community that the risks of concussions extend to head injuries in all sports. Much remains unknown about youth concussions, particularly in terms of how parents feel about concussions and youth sport safety regulations. The authors evaluated the impact of a brief bullying bystander intervention (STAC) on depressive symptoms among high school students using a randomized controlled design. Results of path analyses provided support for a mediational model in which the intervention was associated with an increase in sense of school belonging, which in turn was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. The authors discuss implications for high school counselors and counselors in other settings working with adolescents.

This study was designed to investigate the relationships between death anxiety, psochological depression, and adult attachment patterns within Saudi students in U.S. universities. The sample of 684 participants was obtained via the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) in the United States. Death anxiety was measured by the ASDA survey, psychological depression was measured by the CESD-R survey, and adult attachment patterns were measured by the RQ survey. The particular study aimed to determine the effectiveness of achievement motivation training (AMT) in increasing the achievement motivation of junior high school students. The study used an interrupted time-series design which conducted on an intact group consisting of eight subjects. Data measurements carried out three times in the pre-test and post-test conditions with six forms of achievement motivation scale. The AMT intervention in the psychoeducation frame consists of two strategies, namely achievement thinking and action strategies which are carried out in 12 sessions. The results showed that there is a difference between achievement motivation scores before and after AMT interventions.

The objective of this research is to identify the influence of intelligence and social self interest on the adaptation skill of the department of guidance and counseling students. This quantitative research used the multiple regression analysis. It used purposive total sampling technique, with sample of 38 students of Department of Guidance and Counseling, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM). The results show that intelligence and social self interest of the department of guidance and counseling students simultaneously influence the adaptation skill of 35.9%, while the remaining 64.1% is influenced by other factors.

A personal guiding theory of counseling is an important component of professional identity development for counselors. We utilized the qualitative methodology of portraiture to explore how professional counselors understand their own personal guiding theories of counseling. Three research portraits are shared that demonstrate how participants use the counseling relationship as the means to incorporate their personal guiding theories into their work with clients. Implications for counselors and counselor educators and future research are presented.

Adolescents and young adults are at relatively high risk for sustaining traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). These injuries can result in persistent disabilities, including a range of cognitive, physical, and social-emotional deficits that can be particularly challenging for college age students. This qualitative study explored disability services for college students with TBIs through interviews with directors of 18 college Offices of Disability Services (ODS). Respondents provided general information regarding their service model, the most common disabilities served, as well as the number of students with TBI served, and more specific information pertaining to services for students with TBI. The purpose of this study was to explore whether license-holding mental health professionals in Southern California develop reluctance toward addressing religion/spirituality with their clients. The current study explores attitudes and procedures of gatekeeping in rehabilitation counseling programs. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the current study explores underlying causes for a lack of gatekeeping discussion and action in rehabilitation counseling. Rehabilitation educators and program directors from both CORE and CACREP-accredited rehabilitation counseling programs participated in the online Gatekeeping Attitudes and Procedures Survey (GAPS). Results indicate that, while attitudes towards gatekeeping were positive, programs lack formalized procedures. TPB aids in understanding that attitudes towards gatekeeping may not influence educator behavior on the matter. Implications include further research into this area to better understand the …

Counselor educators are often expected to write for publication and, although encouraged, collaboration creates authorship dilemmas. Using survey methodology, the present study focused on examining authorship practices of counselor educators regarding conceptual and research manuscripts (N = 246) and conference presentations (N = 121). Participants reported their experiences in three areas: (a) doctoral training related to authorship, (b) participation as an author while a doctoral student, and (c) current authorship practices as a faculty member. Detailed outcomes, implications, and recommendations for future research and training are discussed.

This interpretive case study explored the experience of advocates as they pursue social change for transgender and gender-expansive children (ages 4-12). The aim of the study is to improve current understanding of the process of advocacy for this population, as well as the context in which advocacy efforts occur.
