This paper is a narrative of the challenges experienced as a faculty member in an attempt to transform the existing educational model for how school and clinical mental health counselors are trained to enter field-based clinical experiences with students and clients. Collaborative Gatekeeping Between Site Supervisors And Mental Health Counseling Faculty, Christian Dean, Sarah E. Stewart-Spencer, Anne Cabanilla, Dale V. Wayman, Mindy Heher

This study examined collaborative gatekeeping practices of CACREP-accredited (2001 and 2009 standards) mental health counseling programs and fieldwork site supervisors. A total of 28 programs participated in the study exploring site supervisor collaboration with fieldwork faculty when a problematic trainee is terminated, dismissed, or fired from a fieldwork site. Results indicate that a lack of clear policies for managing problem fieldwork trainees may leave counselor educators uncertain about appropriate follow-up actions. Recommendations for future studies include replicating this study using a larger sample size, studying this topic and population using qualitative methods, and surveying the perspective of site supervisors.

Pappasang is a Mandar Tribe cultural product which contains advice. This advice has a characteristic describes the tribe identity of Mandar Tribe. This study aimed to examine the social identity of the Mandar Tribe adolescents in Pappasang as well as the foundation of guidance material. The qualitative study of gadamerian hermeneutics interpreted the social identity of Mandar Tribe adolescents in Pappasang. The findings showed the social identity are: empathy; remind each other; mutual help; solidarity; keep the disgrace on a secret; obedient; generous; democratic. Then, the social identity in Pappasang constructed to be material for guidance and counseling.

The study aimed to determine the authoritative parenting; gender; gender and the influence of authoritative parenting significantly toward big five personality. This quantitative research with descriptive analysis techniques of Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) test involved 62 students of eleventh grade of Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 2 Kupang as a respondent. Data collection technique used the scale instrument of Parental Authority Questionnaire and the International Personality Item Pool. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of bibliotherapy to improve three factors of resilience, namely: aspects of I Have; I Am; and I Can, for orphaned students who live in orphanages. The research subjects were 21 orphaned students selected using purposive sampling technique. The quantitative research used the latin square method and statistical analysis paired t-test to analyze the data. The analysis technique of the instrument validity use Spearman. Meanwhile, the analysis technique of instrument reliability used Alpha Cronbach. The results showed that bibliotherapy can significantly improve the three factors of resilience.

The study aimed to develop CSFCM to improve student self-regulated learning. CSFCM is an application of solution-focused counseling integrated with creative arts. The developmental research consisted of three stages: (1) identify the self-regulated learning level; (2) formulating a hypothetical draft of CSFCM to improve student self-regulated learning; and (3) conducting product feasibility testing by experts and practitioners. Data analysis technique used quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the CSFCM which consisting five stages of counseling was categorized as feasible to be implement in the schools.

Home and community based counseling services have become instrumental to the treatment of children and adolescents struggling with mental illness. Counselors working in these systems of care face significant challenges in this unique setting. Most home and community based counselors (HCBCs) face these challenges as recent graduates, not having adequate preparation for the home setting, while receiving little supervision. HCBCs have reported feeling isolated and unsupported and question their effectiveness as counselors. Women’s experiences with infertility are not only influenced by biological health factors, but also by social, cultural, and personal variables. Within the context of intentional collaboration between doctoral-level program evaluation and counselor educators, this article addresses the need for advanced training in program evaluation for preservice doctoral-level counselor education (CE) students. To determine the current level of evaluation training provided to doctoral students attending a nationally accredited CE program, 81 institutions and their program websites and accompanying materials were analyzed. Approximately 25% of these graduate programs appeared to provide a modest level of training. This project includes an in-service that is tailored for elementary school teachers in the areas of eating disorder identification, warning signs, resources, lesson planning cautions, where to turn for help, and what to do when dealing with a student who is struggling. Concussions can result in a constellation of physical, cognitive, and social– emotional symptoms, most of which resolve within 1 to 2 weeks following the injury. In some instances, social–emotional difficulties following concussion persist, causing ongoing distress and psychosocial impairments. It is important that school psychologists understand the nature of these symptoms, as well as ways in which they can support students who are recovering from concussions. In this article, the authors report counselor educators’ career satisfaction through a descriptive analysis. Seventy-five counselor educators from all across the United States completed an online demographic questionnaire and four self-report instruments related to career satisfaction in general, work environment, and mentorship experiences. The results indicate that counselor educators report satisfaction with most aspects of the job, but report dissatisfaction with pay/promotion and mentorship. This is important for consideration for current and future counselor educators, due to the amount of time and cost associated with obtaining a doctoral degree. The researchers discuss and suggest future research recommendations.

Cybersupervision with counselor education doctoral students is an understudied practice. This phenomenological study explored five doctoral-level counselor education supervisees’ lived experiences engaging in cybersupervision, Their experiences, which were embedded in their converging professional roles, included skepticism and anxiety, learning and growth in their relationship with supervisors, and unique context-dependent meaning making. This article explored the research mentoring experiences of doctoral students’ (N = 131) in counselor education. Descriptive statistics and a factorial Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were utilized to ascertain the mentor roles utilized and the classification of productivity of doctoral students. Recommendations and limitations and implications for the counseling profession are offered to further the development of research regarding the research mentoring experiences of doctoral students.

This constructivist grounded theory investigation explored the experiences and perceptions of seven counselors-in-training regarding psychodynamic theory and practice. Two categories, five themes including three subthemes, and a tentative theory which spoke to the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of students regarding contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy emerged. Implications for counselor education and the training of counselors are discussed.

Cognitive Complexity In Counseling And Counselor Education: A Systematic And Critical Review, Jaime H. Castillo

Cognitive complexity has found a small yet established niche in the counseling and counselor education literature over the last 40 years. This body of research has highlighted how individuals with high cognitive complexity have greater consistency in empathy, show more varied responses to clients, demonstrate greater toleration of ambiguity, and show higher frequencies of unbiased clinical judgements towards clients. This article provides a systematic and critical review of the cognitive complexity literature and discusses future implications of cultivating cognitive complexity in emerging and professional counselors and supervisors.
