The professional counselor can describe the similarities and differences between spirituality and religion, including the basic beliefs of various spiritual systems, major world religions, agnosticism and atheism. The professional counselor recognizes that the client's beliefs (or absence of beliefs) about spirituality and/or religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning.

In 1991, civil war raged in Somalia and the country’s infrastructure began to disintegrate. Since then, millions have fled the violence and instability. Many Somali refugees have settled in the United States; Ohio now has the second larg- est settlement of Somali refugees in the country. Most of these refugees reside in the Columbus area, where numerous out- reach services have been developed. The Somalis are one of many refugee popula- tions that have enrolled children in Ohio schools. This study assessed counselor perceptions of uninsured clients. The professional literature suggests that counselor bias exists against persons with low socioeconomic status. According to United States Census Bureau, a greater percentage of individuals with income at or below the poverty level are uninsured compared to individuals with higher incomes. The professional literature also suggests that financial concerns and multicultural comfort may serve as sources of bias against individuals with low socioeconomic status. As major stakeholders in the helping profession, counselors and other mental health professionals are prepared to assist clients in coping with intensely painful and traumatic experiences. While assisting their clients in processing traumatic events (e.g., natural disasters, violent crimes, grief, accidents, terrorist attacks), however, some professional helpers may become overwhelmed themselves and thereby experience compassion fatigue and/or burnout. This study will evaluate whether certain personal and professional factors in counselors—including objectivism in decision-making and religious beliefs and activities—are related to their ability to avoid compassion fatigue and/or burnout.

Visual journaling is thought to promote students' critical reflection upon their previous learning, their current experiences, and their ongoing professional growth. Research supports the value of written journals as educational tools that encourage reflection, but the potential for visual journaling to facilitate reflection has not been explored through systematic inquiry until now.

This qualitative multiple case study explored four art therapy students' and four counseling students' responses to visual journaling during their internships. The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes and beliefs of counselor educators toward gatekeeping, which become overt in gatekeeping decisions in the context of stringent and less stringent decisions made at seven gates that counselors-in-training must pass though to graduate, and factors extraneous to counselor-in-training competence that may influence gatekeeping decisions. A total of 84 counselor educators participated in this study. Addictions counselors must have an understanding of the effects of licit and illicit drugs on the brain and body. In this 2-credit online course, students will come to understand basic classifications, indications, and contraindications of drugs including prescribed psychopharmacological medications, illicit drugs, and alcohol. This knowledge helps addictions counselors make appropriate referrals for medication evaluations and identify side effects. Students will also learn about basic brain and body responses to drugs of abuse.

Problem: Although the concept of forgiveness is very old, it has not been systematically studied until fairly recently. As forgiveness therapies and the empirical study of these therapies continue to emerge, the question of the counselor’s own sense of religiosity and forgiveness has not been considered. This study looked at the religiosity of counselors/psychotherapists and how this influences the degree to which they have forgiven an individual who has hurt or offended them, as well as whether a counselor’s religiosity influences their willingness to encourage a client to forgive someone who has hurt or offended them.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the contextual and definitional qualities of professional identity as well as the perceptions of success as defined by female counseling professionals. The ideals and beliefs related to professional identity were examined in order to determine if they are upheld by females who practice as professional counselors, counseling doctoral students, and tenure-track counselor educators. Findings indicated 16 themes that addressed issues related to personal and professional congruence and the counseling philosophy; particularly with regard to a conflict with the professional success model as it intersected with personal and professional roles.
