This literature review seeks to discover the impact and effect that bibliotherapeutic interventions can have on students who are experiencing grief, loss, and trauma in various forms. A literature review was created to synthesize the information from multiple studies and articles exploring the effects of bibliotherapy on individuals who have experienced trauma in the forms of death and bereavement, abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, natural disasters, terrorism, and acts of societal violence. Studies have been conducted on the effects homelessness has on youth. According to the National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE, 2020) in the state of Minnesota from 2017- 2018 school year, there were 16,668 homeless youth individuals who were enrolled in public schools. If that number is not daunting, according to the National Center on Family Homelessness (NCFH, 2020), 2.5 million children are now homeless each year in the United States. The influence of interpersonal relationships and Attachment theory on substance use will be discussed throughout this paper. Interpersonal functioning starts early in life and impacts how individuals interact with their environment. Interpersonal relationships and attachment styles are interacting parts when developing relationships. The research discussed within this paper serves as a framework for the development of emotional intelligence curriculum. The curriculum developed includes components of attachment theory and is designed to enhance emotional perception, understanding, awareness, and health boundaries in creating and maintaining relationships among substance-dependent clients in a group treatment setting.

The internet is a key part of identity exploration and the coming out process for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. While the internet offers the benefits of allowing individuals to participate in LGBTQ+ identity formation, community development, and affirming sex education no matter where they live, it also presents challenges. Public sentiment toward sex offenders is that of hatred, contempt, and fear. These attitudes have led to the creation of sex offender legislation that is exceptionally restrictive and punitive. While best practices and current treatment models call for minimization of risk and maximization of personal fulfillment in order to reduce recidivism, sex offender laws pose as obstacles to these goals. The projected growth of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers is unprecedented (Lufkin, 2009). With the growth of women in the workforce and/or obtaining post-secondary degrees, the projected number of females in STEM fields should increase; however, that is not the case. Recently, the estimated percent of women in STEM careers is less than 30% in the United States (“Has employment”, n.d.).
