Attitudes And Beliefs Of Counselor Educators Toward Gatekeeping, Joanna W. Campbell
Attitudes And Beliefs Of Counselor Educators Toward Gatekeeping, Joanna W. Campbell
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes and beliefs of counselor educators toward gatekeeping, which become overt in gatekeeping decisions in the context of stringent and less stringent decisions made at seven gates that counselors-in-training must pass though to graduate, and factors extraneous to counselor-in-training competence that may influence gatekeeping decisions. A total of 84 counselor educators participated in this study. Results showed that counselor educators are most stringent at the admissions gate; that less stringent gatekeeping decisions are made by counselor educators who have experience as a professional counselor prior to becoming a counselor educator at the …
Counselor Perceptions Of Uninsured Clients, Katherine S. Moore
Counselor Perceptions Of Uninsured Clients, Katherine S. Moore
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
This study assessed counselor perceptions of uninsured clients. The professional literature suggests that counselor bias exists against persons with low socioeconomic status. According to United States Census Bureau, a greater percentage of individuals with income at or below the poverty level are uninsured compared to individuals with higher incomes. The professional literature also suggests that financial concerns and multicultural comfort may serve as sources of bias against individuals with low socioeconomic status. In this study, counseling professionals were surveyed to determine the relationship between counselor perceptions of type of client (insured or uninsured), and the contributing variables of work setting, …
Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, Objectivism And Religious Activities/Beliefs In Practitioners, Brenda J. Smith
Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, Objectivism And Religious Activities/Beliefs In Practitioners, Brenda J. Smith
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
As major stakeholders in the helping profession, counselors and other mental health professionals are prepared to assist clients in coping with intensely painful and traumatic experiences. While assisting their clients in processing traumatic events (e.g., natural disasters, violent crimes, grief, accidents, terrorist attacks), however, some professional helpers may become overwhelmed themselves and thereby experience compassion fatigue and/or burnout. This study will evaluate whether certain personal and professional factors in counselors—including objectivism in decision-making and religious beliefs and activities—are related to their ability to avoid compassion fatigue and/or burnout.
A Phenomenological Case Study Of The Multicultural Counseling Experience Of Students And Faculty In Relation To Their Perceptions Of Their Multicultural Competency And Cacrep Standards, Nial P. Quinlan
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The shifting population demographics of the United States are an unmistakable sign that the work of professional counselors and educators will continue to see an increase in the diversity of their client populations. It can be surmised, that paralleling this population change will be a subsequent increase in the demand for multicultural sensitive education and counseling, with particular attention being given to oppressed and marginalized groups who have been traditionally underserved. The counseling profession, guided by the American Counseling Association's (ACA) Code of Ethics, has unequivocally stated that professional counselors need to be proficient at providing multicultural competent counseling services …
Reflective Visual Journaling During Art Therapy And Counseling Internships, Sarah P. Deaver
Reflective Visual Journaling During Art Therapy And Counseling Internships, Sarah P. Deaver
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Visual journaling is thought to promote students' critical reflection upon their previous learning, their current experiences, and their ongoing professional growth. Research supports the value of written journals as educational tools that encourage reflection, but the potential for visual journaling to facilitate reflection has not been explored through systematic inquiry until now.
This qualitative multiple case study explored four art therapy students' and four counseling students' responses to visual journaling during their internships. They maintained their journals throughout one 15-week academic semester, and were interviewed four times over the course of the study. Data consisted of transcribed interviews and photographs …
A Grounded Theory Of School Counselors' Conceptualizations Of Their Training Regarding Adolescent Mental Health Issues, Cynthia Theresa Walley
A Grounded Theory Of School Counselors' Conceptualizations Of Their Training Regarding Adolescent Mental Health Issues, Cynthia Theresa Walley
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
There is a paucity of research regarding master's level school counselors' conceptualizations of their training regarding recognizing and responding to adolescent mental health issues. The purpose of this study was to propose develop a theory that illuminates new school counselors' conceptualizations of their training related to gaining knowledge in recognizing and responding to adolescent mental health issues. To accomplish this, eight school counselors in the southeastern Virginia area participated in two rounds of individual interviews and a reflective writing activity. Utilizing a qualitative grounded theory design, both the interviews and the reflective writing were analyzed to extrapolate themes about their …

Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Their Personal Growth: A Qualitative Inquiry, Ericka L. Souders
Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Their Personal Growth: A Qualitative Inquiry, Ericka L. Souders
Dissertations
Over the past decade there has been increased discussion in the counselor education literature regarding the personal limitations and/or impairments of counselors that may hinder their abilities to provide competent services. Although counseling ethical codes and standards of practice suggest competent counselors are those who demonstrate both professional and personal skills and counselor educators have explored numerous training methods to promote such development, the concern about impaired counselors remains. There is minimal information in the literature that describes how counselors in training develop personal attitudes, skills, and characteristics that may prevent their impairment and facilitate their competency with their clientele. …
