Although business and management education research has made great strides over the last decade, concerns about the area’s legitimacy and attraction of new scholars continue to require attention. One of the obstacles that may impede the area’s progress is a lack of knowledge of the influential works that may be useful in determining the nature and magnitude of potential contributions. Using Harzing’s Publish or Perish and a broad list of search terms related to business and management education, we generated an initial list of 100 highly cited articles published since 1970. Fifty-eight of the 100 articles were published in or …

He Effects Of Informal Social Structures: A Cognition–Structure–Action Approach, Harry "Trip" Knoche, Gary J. Castrogiovanni
Organization Management Journal
The purpose of this article is to examine the effects of epistemic motives and social structures on individual actions and the implications for organizational outcomes. It has been suggested that the informal social structures that develop within organizations affect the behavior of individuals, perhaps more so than formal structure. If this is true, when studying organizations it may be important to examine the effects of informal social structures on individual actions and organizational outcomes. Drawing on findings from epistemic motive theory and expanding social capital theory, a cognition–structure–action model is introduced as a way to begin systematically examining the informal …

Mapping The Association Of Emotional Contagion To Leaders, Colleagues, And Clients: Implications For Leadership, Laura Petitta, Shahnaz Naughton
Mapping The Association Of Emotional Contagion To Leaders, Colleagues, And Clients: Implications For Leadership, Laura Petitta, Shahnaz Naughton
Organization Management Journal
This article investigates emotional contagion in workplaces by proposing an expanded approach that simultaneously considers contagion both absorbed by (i.e., contagion absorbed) and issued toward (i.e., contagion infected) others, namely, within-individual bidirectional contagion. Furthermore, it explores the differential association of contagion to leaders, colleagues, and clients, namely, a holistic mapping. Participants (N = 694) from six organizations were asked how frequently they both absorbed and transmitted four basic emotions from or to others, and whether the emotional experience occurred with regard to their leaders, colleagues, and clients. The findings reveal that positive and negative emotions considered for within-individual bidirectional contagion …

Managers’ Family-Supportive Supervisory Behaviors: A Multilevel Perspective, Sue A. Epstein, Janet H. Marler, Thomas D. Taber
Managers’ Family-Supportive Supervisory Behaviors: A Multilevel Perspective, Sue A. Epstein, Janet H. Marler, Thomas D. Taber
Organization Management Journal
Using a combination of trait and situational variables we develop a model to explore the antecedents of managers’ family-supportive behaviors. Our model hypotheses were tested using data gathered from a sample of 312 subordinates matched to 92 managers. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) of the nested data yielded results that show both an individual manager’s trait (i.e., empathy) and situational variables (i.e., subordinate’s family-to-work conflict and leader–subordinate exchange quality) significantly predicted managers’ supportive behaviors. Additional HLM analyses showed that the manager’s gender (trait) and group work-to-family conflict (situation) moderated the relationship between manager’s empathy and family-supportive behaviors. Our results suggest that …

High-Performance Work Systems As An Initiator Of Employee Proactivity And Flexible Work Processes, W. Randy Evans, Walter D. Davis
Organization Management Journal
We offer a conceptual framework that explicates the effect of high-performance work systems (HPWS) on the flexibility of organizational work processes. The flexibility of work processes is conceptualized as the extent to which organizational work routines can be modified by employees to better exploit existing capabilities or be adapted to explore new alternatives. We argue that HPWS directly facilitate individual proactivity, and foster a supportive social structure that further enables individuals to be proactive in modifying their work processes. The proposed model is in response to calls for researchers to consider proximal outcomes related to the use of human resource …

Increasing Knowledge By Leaps And Bounds: Using Experiential Learning To Address Threshold Concepts, Thomas P. Bradley, Gerald F. Burch, Jana J. Burch
Organization Management Journal
The discussion of threshold concepts is growing in the management education literature. These concepts create challenges for students and instructors since they act as barriers to learning. The reward for overcoming these obstacles is the opening of new ways of thinking that were not available before the student mastered the threshold concepts. We propose in this article that many students believe business education is “common sense” and do not understand that management is practice informed by theory. When students master the threshold concept concerning the “underlying game” of management, they begin to develop deeper and more meaningful understandings. From this …

Taking Nothing For Granted In Management Education: A Systemic Perspective On The Role Of Reflective Questioning, A. Georges L. Romme, Inge C. M. Van Seggelen-Damen
Organization Management Journal
Questioning is one of the most critical behaviors in management education and learning. In this article we explore the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of reflective questioning, as a key element of management learning and education. Reflective questioning involves raising tentative, nonrhetorical questions. By reviewing and synthesizing the literature, we develop a model of reflective questioning in the form of a causal loop diagram. This model implies that reflective questioning can be taught through particular forms of management education, but is also contingent on the psychological safety of the group setting, the individual need for cognition, and challenging tasks and experiences.

Implementing Voice Strategies In Extreme Negotiations: A Conversation With Christophe Caupenne, Successful Former Commando Of The French Raid Unit, Christophe Haag, Elizabeth Fresnel
Organization Management Journal
This article explores the role voice plays in extreme negotiation through the point of view of a practitioner. In this study, we invite Christophe Caupenne, a former Research, Assistance, Intervention, and Deterrence (RAID) chief—now a private consultant to top managers and professional negotiators—to write in detail about his expertise. It was the first time he had fully reflected upon how his voice and vocal strategies psychologically impacted critical negotiations. Our goal was to determine whether business negotiators could learn from their well-trained police counterparts, many of whom engaged in high-stakes negotiations. We augmented our expert’s essay with a 2-hour interview, …

In introducing concepts of leadership and followership to students, this experiential exercise highlights qualities associated with the leader and follower roles. Various learning objectives guide the development of the exercise. They focus on identification of behavioral qualities possessed by both leaders and followers and on the importance of the leader-follower relationship to the organization’s achievement of goals. Theoretical underpinnings are stressed throughout. In the exercise, students individually develop a list of characteristics associated with their own most admired leader or follower and then share their lists in small groups. In plenary discussion, groups share all characteristics identified, and the instructor …
Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss
Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss
Organization Management Journal
Decades of research have demonstrated that managers can effect substantial performance improvements by setting challenging and specific performance goals (Locke & Latham, 2002), providing goal-relevant feedback on a regular basis (Karakowsky & Mann, 2008), and, when appropriate, involving subordinates in goal setting (Stansfield & Longenecker, 2006). This article reviews core findings from the goal setting literature, and presents a collaborative exercise in which teams of students apply these findings to address management problems in five fictitious scenarios. Debriefing tips cite additional research evidence to allow for more nuanced classroom discussion of goal setting. A pretest indicated that prior to completing …

Mission-Centric Learning: Developing Students’ Workplace Readiness Skills, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley, Kathleen Wheatley
Organization Management Journal
We discuss and evaluate the implementation of a mission-centric course project that is strategically tied to learning outcomes important to colleges of business. Specifically, to support our college’s mission, undergraduate students enrolled in a training and development class were tasked with applying course concepts to assess the need for, to design, and to deliver (to other business students) workplace readiness training. To aid other management educators interested in adopting similar strategically aligned and feedback-rich learning experiences, we outline and discuss relevant project planning, design, and facilitation issues, as well as present a summary of initial results derived from this project.

Political Islam And Religious Violence In Post-New Order Indonesia, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This paper tries to understand why religious violence increasingly occurs in post-New Order Indonesia. There are two dominant views in understanding this. First, the secu- rity approach that perceives the violence as a result of the emergent of “radical” agent of political Islam in the more open political space. In this regard, the state is considered weak because the iron hand as used by the authoritarian regime in the past New Order has disappeared. Thus, the strong security instruments are needed as a solution, such as the law on anti-terrorism and the police force of anti-terrorism (Densus 88). Second, the …

The Politics Of Civil Society Organizations (Csos) Post-Reformation 1998, Aditya Perdana
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
After the reformation (reformasi) in 1998, some civil society organizations (CSOs) have en- dorsed policy changes from outside the government and have involved in many ministries’ assistance team to implement government’s development programs. These CSOs’ political action changes from outside to become inside the government are caused by the openness of political opportunity from political regime after Reformasi. Even though CSOs have used these political opportunities, these organizations faced seriously challenges in politi- cal field such as the fragmented of CSOs to endorse many policy reform and changes. In addition, there is lack of supporting changes in political culture structures …
