The Media And Women Without Apology, Everette E. Dennis, Ted Pease

Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications

WHETHER IT IS a rejuvenated sense of urgency or simply the last straw of impatience in the latest "year of the woman," something new is in the air when people talk about women and the media. Conversations with people who care about mass communication, the larger society and how women are portrayed in or employed by print and electronic media have taken on a new, sharper tone in recent years, especially in 1992.

Top NEWS IN 1992-government and political news. Least prominent: agriculture and transportation. In a presidential election year, that's not too surprising. But who wrote what? Examination of a sample of front pages of 10 newspapers circulating to almost 8 million Americans every day from January through December offers some insights into news content and story assignments in the Year of the Woman.

Established in December,I897, under the banner of "A Journal for the People," (later "A Paper for the People") it announced both its political and journalistic stance: as an opposition newspaper. Unlike its nineteenth century antiestablishment predecessors, the Sunday Times endured because of the significant and permanent demographic changes in Western Australia commencing in the 1890's and the consequent shifts in the origin and distribution of wealth. The paper later published metropolitan and goldfields editions and its circulation also extended to other parts …

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

The Ten Days Of Christmas: Tv Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Twelve Days of Christmas we don't have, but we do have ten days of Christmas from December 25 through January 3 during which television offers a mind-boggling array of football, basketball(professional and college), and hockey. Sports television in the late 20th century may have spawned an entirely new concept of the days of Christmas.

Shaq: The Latest Impact Player, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They are called impact players. The kind of player who can come into a league and make an immediate impact on a team, and even on a league. They are few and far between. The Orlando Magic has one. At 7'1" and around 300 pounds he is what Al McGuire termed an aircraft carrier, and Dick Vitale calls a space eater. Either description will do. He is Shaquille O'Neal. The Shaq.
