He has been called, Mr. October, The Ultimate Hot Dog, Reg-aroo, a shoo-in for the Ego Hall of Fame, and Regg-ie, Regg-ie. But my favorite has always been the self-proclaimed, "Straw that Stirs the Drink." Reginald Martinez Jackson. Born May 18, 1946, in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, could stir the drink like few in the History of Baseball.

Magic Fire Goukas And Sentinel Misses The Story - Ben Chapman Obit, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
After a few weeks to digest and contemplate the events surrounding the Orlando Magic, the picture remains partly cloudy. The one thing we know for sure is that the local newspaper completely and totally failed. The Orlando Sentinel has two reporters assigned full time to cover the Orlando Magic, and several of their other reporters and columnists pride themselves on being well connected into the local sports scene. It is interesting then that it was ESPN in Hartford, Connecticut, rather than the local paper which broke the story that Matt Goukas was pushed or jumped up the stairs at One …

Radio—The Forgotten Medium, Everette E. Dennis, Ted Pease
Radio—The Forgotten Medium, Everette E. Dennis, Ted Pease
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
ASK ABOUT "THE MEDIA" and people think first of television, then newspapers. Sometimes, though not always, they acknowledge the existence of radio. But it is not uncommon for media critics to ignore radio altogether in their treatment of the larger modern media mix. Although the average American owns multiple radios and lives with this most portable medium in every room in the house, in the office, the car and even in parks, mountain retreats and at the beach, radio is rarely the topic of public discussion, giving it the dubious identity of "the forgotten medium." This, the oldest of the …

June 20, 1993 will be remembered in sport history as the day that the Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns in the American West Arena to win the 1992-93 NBA Championship and a Three-peat. It is only the third time in NBA history a team has won the championship three years in a row.
The Press And Politics: A Comprehensive Examination, Heather Long
The Press And Politics: A Comprehensive Examination, Heather Long
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article is based on interviews and research on the press and politicians, whose relationship is shown to be extremely controversial. Views held by members of the press, who see themselves as dutiful to their readers, are radically different from those held by politicians, who see reporters as money-hungry thieves who do not stop short of invasion of privacy for a story. The views of scholars — who attempt to make sense of the relationship — are different from both. The author attempts to amalgamate these views, assess the picture of the institutional relationship as it truly exists, and discover …

Winona Campus Life
Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Sporting Heroes As Role Models, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Charles Barkley has been in our face now for several weeks with a commercial for one of those tiresome shoe companies in which he announces: "I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model... parents should be role models...I am paid to wreak havoc on a basketball court. Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids."
Compassionate Capitalism, Richard C. Crepeau
Compassionate Capitalism, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

The Ncaa And The Myth Of Amateurism, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Just over a week ago Dick Schultz resigned as the Executive Director of the NCAA, a position he has held since 1987. Schultz has been called a leader in the reform of Intercollegiate Athletics and has changed the public image of the NCAA. His resignation was prompted by the fact that the NCAA had found rules violations in the University of Virginia athletic program during the Dick Schultz years as Athletic Director there. Virginia has been placed on two years probation.
