Winona Campus Life
Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

The NCAA decided a year ago to cut the number of scholarships for men's basketball from fifteen to thirteen. Two weeks ago that body in convention rejected an attempt by a number of coaches to restore one of the two scholarships. This produced cries of pain from several of the coaches, and from one coaches group, the Black Coaches Association. They claimed racism, and threatened a boycott. The threat was withdrawn when the Congressional Black Caucus and the Justice Department displayed some interest in the subject. One can only speculate that the NCAA would have preferred a boycott to the …

Winning isn't everything, its the only thing. The words of course of that great American philosopher Vince Lombardi. I was reminded of them once again this week as the bizarre story of the attack on Nancy Kerrigan unfolded. And as it unfolded the nature of this commentary changed dramatically.

It is fascinating to be in the middle of a sporting event and to be surrounded by thousands of people who are rabidly involved, and to be in a position in which you are essentially indifferent to the outcome. The most startling thing about this experience is the realization that human beings could get worked into a frenzy by something of such little significance, while knowing that you yourself would be in the same state if it was your favorite team that was involved. In some ways it is a sobering experience.

News Media Objectivity: How Do We Ask The Questions?, Stephen D. Cooper
News Media Objectivity: How Do We Ask The Questions?, Stephen D. Cooper
Communications Faculty Research
There is a lively and often public debate in progress concerning the objectivity of the news media, or the lack of it Scholars have approached this topic from three distinct angles: content analysis, values, and the economics of the news industry. Their conclusions have varied markedly, apparently guided by their particular frames of reference.
This article suggests that while we seem to have lost our fix on objectivity as a measurable attribute of news products, the news work routine of objectivity encourages fairness in our public discourse, and deserves attention in scholarly research.

IMAGINE," THE SCENARIO would begin, "a room/place/device/system that will serve all your communication needs for information, entertainment, messaging, home shopping, protective security, banking and much more .... " In countless books, articles, speeches, television documentaries and news programs these and other promises have been made for decades. In his visionary science fiction work, Voices from the Sky, Arthur C. Clarke imagined this and more. So did technologists who thought cable television would be the instrument for multifaceted new media services. Others spoke of a cosy menage a trois of telephone, television and computer, an integrated world of multimedia wonder wherein …
