Losing Money Going To Bowl Games, Richard C. Crepeau

With the barrage of bowl games these past several days one can only marvel at the willingness of sponsors and cities to pay out millions of dollars to universities to provide a few hours of entertainment during the holidays. Last year the University of Wisconsin took away $12.5M for the Big Ten from the Badger's Rose Bowl appearance. The participants at this year's Sugar Bowl, allegedly the national championship game, will take away between $11M and $13M each. Moving down the pecking order to near the bottom the payouts run to about a million dollars.

An Effect Of The Medium In News Stories: “The Pictures In Our Heads”, Stephen D. Cooper

This study used an experimental design to test for a channel effect in news stories. Four television news stories were recorded off-air, then the narrations were transcribed to form a print news story containing the same words; the broadcast video and the print story were the two treatment levels. Subjects received the stories in one of the treatment levels, and were asked to judge the blameworthiness or praiseworthiness of the actors named in the story. Logistic regressions could predict with substantial accuracy the medium in which subjects had received the story from these judgments, indicating a channel effect on their …

Although the public generally thinks of the news media as sources of factual, complete and objective information, due to the routines of production through which journalists are trained to use to present and gather news, they cannot be objective. The sources journalists rely on for information, and the choices they make in deciding what is newsworthy and how to frame stories influences what and how information is portrayed to the public. The Cherokees are among the most well-known Native American tribes in the United States today, largely because of their removal from Georgia along the Trail of Tears. Most American history books depict them as down-trodden victims, yet the Cherokees version of the pivotal events of 1831, as found in their newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, indicates otherwise. The rhetorical strategies used by Elias Boudinot, editor of the Phoenix, in his column suggest that the Cherokees were active players in their own fate. Reproductive Health

To raise public awareness of reproductive health (RH) issues, the Population Council’s Frontiers project and the Futures Group’s Policy project jointly organized four press briefings and provided background materials to key journalists from Arabic newspapers and magazines. From May 1999 to June 2000, project staff worked closely with 20 Egyptian journalists, including editors of women’s pages and senior editors. The press briefings covered youth, marriage patterns, contraceptive technology, and menopause. The press kit prepared for each briefing contained fact sheets, reference materials, a contact list of key experts, and an evaluation sheet. To assess RH reporting and track coverage resulting …

This study uses content analysis to reveal aspects of the content in newspaper columns written by Erma Bombeck compared with column content written by Art Buchwald. The purpose of this study was to reveal content characteristics that may be perceived as having propelled the columnist Erma Bambeck into the status of one of the top syndicated humorist columnists, based on the uses and gratifications and media dependency theories. Art Buchwald was chosen for a comparative analysis because of his status as one of the top syndicated humorist columnists.

His ban from baseball is the result of the Commissioner of Baseball concluding that there was sufficient evidence that he had been gambling on baseball. He did not contest the finding, but then he also refuses to acknowledge the finding.
