This dissertation examined the Facebook activities of seven small nonprofits in Los Angeles to understand their social media use and audience responses. Prior research has distinguished three broader engagement strategies used by Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs), including information provision (awareness-raising), action-related messaging (mobilizing), and community-building efforts (organizing). These strategies can play essential roles in drawing in audiences, but also in moving individual supporters toward greater levels of engagement by increasing donations or becoming more engaged champions for the cause. It is expected that secondary exposure to e-cigarette aerosol (passive vaping) will soon become an issue of public health. Passive vaping inhales e-cigarette aerosol containing similar harmful substances as active vaping. However, parallel studies on passive vaping are minimal. Therefore, there is a need for passive vaping-related health risk studies to assess the impact of vaping on public health. The present study explores the link between Terror Management Theory and the use of its principles within news media. Political news media in the digital age undergoes a variety of framing effects, more specifically episodic and thematic frames of stories. To induce mortality salience, college-aged participants were presented with stories framed from the perspective of an individual’s experience or a general theme of experiences regarding the controversial pro-life topic and a non-controversial hiking topic. Drawing from CARES Act news coverage, this study investigated how different market-oriented news organizations modulated the debate on the most expansive stimulus bill in modern U.S. history, released in 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic. A comparative approach was used, between news articles produced by a strongly market-oriented and a weakly market-oriented news outlet, both national news outlets, based in the United States. This paper examines social media activity by UK museums during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a general perception that as museums closed their doors for extended periods, their digital presence increased to maintain connections with their audiences. However, much of the research conducted in this area is based on small-scale studies and examples of best practice from large, well-resourced museums. By contrast, this study utilizes a comprehensive database of over 3300 active UK museums to understand the use of Facebook and Twitter across the sector. Patients’ evaluations of healthcare often rely on patient satisfaction and encounter-specific approaches. Instead, valuable information can be gained by focusing on patient dissatisfaction with healthcare over time. This study examined patients’ sources of care dissatisfaction when seeking healthcare for a long-term chronic and complex disease (CCD). Participants with a CCD called polycystic kidney disease (N=387) completed an online questionnaire with an open-ended question about dissatisfying experiences. Content analysis was used to analyze responses. The coded data resulted in conceptual codes related to dissatisfaction with information, support, and care management. Interactions with rapport are considered essential to palliative care and beneficial to patient outcomes. With the current interest in telehealth, more knowledge is needed about rapport during telehealth encounters in palliative care from the patient and family viewpoint. The objective of this study was to explore patient and family experiences of rapport with health professionals during telehealth interactions in the community palliative care setting. Analyzing youth video submissions regarding COVID-19 to KQED’s ‘Let’s Talk About the Election’ website, we explore the mathematics these youth engaged in through their submissions without creating any explicit connection to school mathematical concepts or standards. Our focus is the students’ construction of sets (e.g. sets of nurses, doctors, American workers), as a means of creating connection with voters and other media authors through Marchi and Clark’s (2021) construct of connective journalism. In 2019, \#DisruptJMM, a Twitter hashtag, began circulating after an Inclusion/Exclusion blog by Dr. Piper H pointing to the need to make commonplace conversations about human suffering in the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM). While the \#DisruptJMM hashtag has been used since 2019, the vast majority of use was in the JMM 2020 meetings. Twitter hashtags are used by activists to push forward conversations, join communities around a single idea, and create change. Switchin’ Up: The Effect Of Code-Switching On Black Professionals In Predominantly White Organizations, Christina G. Roach

This study explored how highly educated Black professionals holding at least a four-year degree view use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in relation to their ethnic identity. Additionally, the study investigated whether code-switching impacts participants’ organizational identification or their connectedness to ethnic identity. Through interviews, I uncovered that although 3 of 12 participants indicated that use of AAVE felt natural to them, 6 participants use it infrequently or not at all. Surprisingly, using Standard American English (SAE) had little to no effect on most participants’ feelings of connectedness to their ethnic identity. This research also uncovered that though all …

Objective: This study examined differences between users and non-users of campus food pantry, conducted communication audit, and made recommendations for future food pantry communication. Methods: Cross-sectional twofold study, first analyzing existing intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental data to test predictors of campus food pantry usage characteristics, using inferential statistics. Secondly, conducting a communication audit that evaluates the reach of student communication. Results: Significant differences were found between users and non-users of food pantry that support hypotheses in relation to gender, age, race, class, marital status, housing type, housing description, and Pell eligibility. Findings could not support hypothesized differences in first-generation status. …

This coincides with a disinformation pandemic full of false news and propaganda running rampant online. What often ensues is a social distortion that poses as reality. Each year within the United States 73% of children and adolescents participate in some form of organized sport (Aspen Institute, 2020). This participation results in a high rate of injury necessitating 2.6 million emergency room visits each year (Merkel, 2013). Over half of these injuries incurred in youth sport are deemed overuse injuries (Valovich McLeod et al., 2011), which are a leading cause in the high attrition rate seen in youth athletics today (Persson et al., 2020; Mangan, 2018). The Basic Communication Course And College Student Retention: A Longitudinal Analysis, David E. Schneider, Jennifer D. Mccullough

This longitudinal study examined the relationship between two formats of the basic communication course (BCC) and first-year college student retention over a four-year period. Chi-square and logistic regression models indicated students who completed the BCC were more likely to be retained than those who did not complete the BCC. While completing the BCC was associated with retention for both formats, the hybrid BCC format was more consistently related to retention than the public speaking BCC. Students from certain demographic groups who completed the hybrid BCC were retained more frequently than students from the same demographic who did not complete the …

Research remains scant and ambiguous despite the need to understand better user-generated content (UGC) and its relationship with behavioral outcomes. In this regard, the influence of UGC on two types of visitors' word of mouth (WOM) was examined. In addition, satisfaction as a mediator was tested to gain more insight into the UGC and WOM relationships. Using a sample of 260 visitors (tourists & excursionists) who visited the historical site in China, SmartPLS was used to evaluate the study model and hypotheses. As students try to make sense of their college experience and the value of attaining a degree post-pandemic, educators are grappling with finding new methods to re-engage students in the classroom using a range of modalities. This case study explored student reactions to flipped classroom learning experiences, and possible relationship between the flipped classroom technique and academic performance in communication education. This introduction summarises the objectives and themes of a special issue that highlights global-local interdependencies in the history of educational technologies. It suggests that discussions of the development, diffusion, and use of technologies of teaching and learning around the world could benefit from a broadening of the definition of educational technologies, a diversification of research materials and practices, and a focus on underrepresented voices and asymmetrical power relations. Offering such perspectives, the ten articles included in the special issue present welcome approaches to tracing the historical and contemporary adoption of technologies in and beyond educational settings.

The Influence Of Social Media And Institutional Trust On Vaccine Hesitancy In France: Examining Direct And Mediating Processes, Christopher J. Mckinley, Elea Olivier, Jeremy K. Ward

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) remains an ongoing challenge in French society. This project explored how institutional trust and preference for information via social media (PISM) drive hesitancy. Across a large, nationally represented population, our findings show that PISM and trust are strongly correlated measures, with both independently predicting VH. Subsequent mediation tests show that social media operates as primarily an indirect contributor to VH through trust. Additional tests involving VH and non-VH typologies revealed that institutional trust consistently predicts greater general support for vaccines and reduced distrust in vaccination. Conversely, PISM directly drives vaccine distrust, with its impact on non-hesitancy fully …

Existing literature has identified mothers as the primary reproductive educators of their daughters and has determined mother-daughter conversations about reproduction to be an indicator of daughters’ sexual and reproductive behaviors. The overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, had an immediate impact on the reproductive lives of many people, including daughters. Through one-on-one interviews with 10 daughters, this qualitative study identifies three changes in mother-daughter reproductive conversations that were influenced by the overturning of Roe v.
