The case study describes a successful smart growth initiative in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, at an intersection known as Atkins Corner. The initiative grew from two motivating factors: the necessity of realigning Route 116, a major north-to-south artery through the town, to decrease traffic accidents at the intersection and improve pedestrian safety; and a desire on the part of Hampshire College and the Town to create a village center at the intersection. Through a consensus-building process involving key town officials, Hampshire College, neighbors, and the design firm of Dodson Associates, agreement on the project was reached with local stakeholders …

Taking The Charisma Out: Teaching As Facilitation, Joseph A. Raelin

Organization Management Journal

The author provides a personal account of his transition from attempting to use charisma to transmit knowledge to students to removing it so that students can themselves experience knowledge as a basis for learning. Consistent with inquiry-based democratic pedagogy, the author demonstrates how he became more a facilitator of learning than its transmitter. He shows how putting charisma into unscheduled classroom inquiry rather than into the teacher’s delivery can produce knowledge collectively and concurrently co-constructed in service of action.

One reason that academic service-learning is still not utilized in some schools of business is that their faculty and administrators remain uninformed and uneducated about this pedagogy. This article was written to help bridge the gap between theory and practice with regard to the actual design and implementation of servicelearning in management education. In this article, I will discuss the design, implementation, experiences, student suggestions, changes, and reflections related to a human resource course taught during the springs of 2003 and 2004.

Student Self-Assessment: A Tool For Engaging Management Students In Their Learning, Andy T. Dungan, Leigh Gronich Mundhenk

This article discusses the use of student self-assessment (SSA) for formative and summative assessment in two undergraduate programs, a management program and a leadership program, to encourage students to become more engaged in their learning. Using action research, we used an iterative process of changing or refining our methods to accommodate the differences in our teaching environments, concluding that different methods may be desirable in different environments, and that students appear to benefit from SSA regardless of the method used. Popular Representations Of Jewish Identity On Primetime Television: The Case Of The O.C., Tamara Olson

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

Relying on a close reading of the primetime television soap opera The O.C., this thesis argues that Jewish identity on television has become perfectly compatible with normative Whiteness. While The O.C. is filled with signifiers of Jewishness, they are cultural rather than religious and are celebrated rather than rejected by WASPs. This analysis highlights the way Jews have been transformed from racialized “Others” in popular culture to Whites who embrace Jewish cultural styles, especially Jewish humor.

This capstone course extended the classroom to include practitioner-focused research projects and presentations to senior-level campus management. The course served as a student learning laboratory for experiencing working-world settings, problems, and expectations, using the controlled environment of a college human resource management office, working with the Director of Human Resource Management. After the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, anti-Americanism increased among predominantly Muslim nations. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to explore the perceptions of 11 international students from predominantly Muslim nations toward the U.S. It also examines whether the students' perceptions have changed since arriving in the United States and whether perceptions could stem from propaganda. Results indicated generally positive perceptions toward America and significantly improved perceptions toward Americans. Perceptions of the U.S. government, the Bush administration and U.S. foreign policy, however, were generally negative -- primarily stemming from the war in Iraq and America's role in the …

SM is a type of anxiety disorder that can occur when a child develops an acute fear of speaking. I provided Phonological Awareness Training and Narrative Intervention to a seven year old girl, S.C., diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy of a nondenerative type. S.C. has sever speech and physical impairments secondary to the Muscular Dystrophy. She also has visual perceptual deficits secondary to Duanes Syndrome (a disorder of visual convergence). Because of her disabilities, S.C. is unable to use speech or sign language as her primary means of communication and an Augmentative and Alternative communication device is required for communication purposes. Health programs in Utah's curriculum focus mainly on the after effects of media's influence--eating disorders, low self-esteem and other destructive teenage behavior--and no one puts the correct amount of blame on television or the advertisements that promote buying to be beautiful. However, studies have found a strong correlation in teens between media consumption and negative behaviors. Teens are, after all, a main target for over $30 million ad dollars every year. This study examines effective public relations techniques used by higher education fund raising professionals in cultivating an alumni donor base. The researcher surveyed fund raising professionals in the nation's top private and public colleges and universities. The researcher also conducted a personal interview with a top fund-raiser in the field of higher education.

Survey participants rated donor bases, identified when they begin to cultivate relationships for lifetime giving and the effectiveness of strategies to obtain alumni support. They were equipped through seven sessions of theological reflection on Scripture and reflection on narratives of those who have offered pastoral blessings. In this paper we present a new tool for semantic analytics through 3D visualization called “Semantic Analytics Visualization” (SAV). It has the capability for visualizing ontologies and meta-data including annotated web-documents, images, and digital media such as audio and video clips in a synthetic three-dimensional semi-immersive environment. More importantly, SAV supports visual semantic analytics, whereby an analyst can interactively investigate complex relationships between heterogeneous information. The tool is built using Virtual Reality technology which makes SAV a highly interactive system. This thesis explores different disciplinary studies and discussions of dress, and more specifically, the use of dress in constructing a gendered identity and sexual identity. To conduct this research, I performed a literature review and referenced various social psychological, sociological, and/or feminist theoretical frameworks. I argue that dress cannot serve as any sort of innate or accurate indicator of sexual identity; rather, the meanings associated with dress are socially produced and vary across time and place.
