Sport Drugs And Semantics, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2006

Sport Drugs And Semantics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If you picked up your newspaper one morning or tuned into SportsCenter and you were greeted by the headline, "Tiger Tests Positive," how would you react? Would it be total disbelief? Would you simply dismiss the announcement from the World Anti-Doping Agency as some mistake, or the result of fanatical WADA leadership seeking to make headlines? Would any of you immediately presume Tiger was guilty, and rejoice that he had finally been caught?

Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick Sep 2006

Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick

Organization Management Journal

The author reflects on his experience and discusses problems in teaching a course about spirituality and religion in the workplace. Sometimes indoctrination happens when professors treat their own spiritual ideology as the truth, or they require students to engage in religious practices in class. Indoctrination is teaching people “to accept a system of thought uncritically.” The management education literature has little to say about indoctrination. Indoctrination can be avoided by (1) ensuring informed consent, (2) designing learning activities for students from all spiritual perspectives, (3) teaching about the topic (instead of taking the “how to” approach), (4) presenting diverse spiritual …

The New Breed Of Black South African Senior Managers: Helping South African Businesses Meet The Challenge Of A Transforming Economy, Sylvia Sloan Black, Marta A. Geletkanycz Sep 2006

The New Breed Of Black South African Senior Managers: Helping South African Businesses Meet The Challenge Of A Transforming Economy, Sylvia Sloan Black, Marta A. Geletkanycz

Organization Management Journal

Blacks, while still not an integral part of the management structure in the South African economy, are making gains. As management composition changes, cultural issues will become more salient. Early senior black managers were well versed in the Anglo/American cultures due to foreign education and work experience. Future gains will likely come from internal promotion. This new breed of black managers will be more immersed in their native culture. We posit that, although conflicts between Anglo/American business customs and customs based on the African ubuntu tradition may occur, South African firms will become stronger through increased diversity in senior management …

The Impact Of Managerial Networking Relationships On Organizational Performance In SubSaharan Africa: Evidence From Ghana, Moses Acquaah Sep 2006

The Impact Of Managerial Networking Relationships On Organizational Performance In SubSaharan Africa: Evidence From Ghana, Moses Acquaah

Organization Management Journal

This paper focuses on how managerial networking relationships developed with external entities affect organizational performance using survey data from organizations in Ghana. Networking relationships with external entities are established so as to obtain resources, valuable information, and to acquire and exploit knowledge, in order to overcome the high level of uncertainty in the business environment. The findings provide strong support that managerial networking relationships developed with top managers of other firms, government bureaucratic officials, community leaders, and leaders of employee unions and representatives enhance organizational performance. However, managerial networking relationships developed with politicians at different levels of government are either …

Bridging Cultural Policy And Media Policy In The U.S.: Challenges And Opportunities, Philip M. Napoli Sep 2006

Bridging Cultural Policy And Media Policy In The U.S.: Challenges And Opportunities, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

Cultural policy and media policy have remained largely distinct fields of research, policy-making, and policy advocacy in the United States. As a result, there has been relatively little cross-pollination of research findings, methodological tools, or advocacy resources and expertise. There are, however, significant areas of overlap between these two fields. Unfortunately, these areas of overlap have not been fully explored, nor have the potential benefits for researchers, policy advocates, policy-makers, of identifying, building upon, and strengthening these points of overlap been considered.

This paper provides an analytical overview of the media policy and cultural policy literatures, in an effort to …

Mindsets And Internationalization Success: An Exploratory Study Of The British Retail Grocery Industry, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pedro David Perez, Benjamin Morganstein Sep 2006

Mindsets And Internationalization Success: An Exploratory Study Of The British Retail Grocery Industry, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pedro David Perez, Benjamin Morganstein

Organization Management Journal

Despite the growing pressures of internationalization, failures in international efforts are becoming increasingly widespread. Previous literature has developed external environmental and internal firm-specific explanations of international success, but has ignored the role of mindsets in understanding international failures. This gap is especially important because recent studies contend that the mindsets or the way top managers make sense of their global environment is central to international decision making and outcomes. We propose that mindsets are important in explaining international success. We compare the mindsets of two matched firms in the British retail grocery industry—one successful (Tesco) and another unsuccessful (Sainsbury)—from 1988 …

What’S The Hang Up? The Future Of Voip Regulation And Taxation In New Hampshire, Kate Winstanley

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Alice in Austria wishes to call her friend Bob in Boston, using a Boston area code to avoid charges for an international call. Using VoIP, Alice may initiate her call from any location in Austria where she may find Internet access. Once Alice connects to the Internet, she can transmit her call with the aid of a VoIP service provider, such as Skype. In order to hear and communicate with Bob, Alice can rely on a microphone and a headset that she can plug into her computer. Through VoIP, not only may Alice carry on a telephone conversation, but most …

Capstone Courses In Mass Communication Programs, Jack Rosenberry, Lauren Vicker Sep 2006

Capstone Courses In Mass Communication Programs, Jack Rosenberry, Lauren Vicker

Media and Communication Faculty/Staff Publications

Many colleges and universities emphasize helping students make the transition into higher education. But transition to post-graduation life through approaches such as capstone courses has not received much attention. A survey of mass communication programs indicated that capstones are commonly used for both integration of prior learning and for transition to what students may face after graduation, and that mass communication programs appear to be meeting the challenge of blending these somewhat incongruous approaches. Mass communication capstones employ a wide variety of methods and content, but teachers and administrators appear satisfied with how the courses serve their programs. The survey’s …

Examining The Cdcynergy Event Assessment Tool: An Investigation Of The Anthrax Crisis In Boca Raton, Florida, J. J. Mcintyre, Steven J. Venette

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the dependability of the Event Assessment Tool over time. The latter is part of a CD-ROM-Emergency Risk Communication CDCynergy-distributed primarily to public information officers in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Event Assessment Tool is designed to aid emergency professionals in identifying the magnitude of a crisis event and to suggest appropriate actions to confront such a situation. Applied twice during the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism crisis in Boca Raton, Florida, the tool functioned in a binary manner by first indicating a moderate crisis level (on 4 October) and then four days …

Semantic Interoperability Of Web Services - Challenges And Experiences, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Jonathan Lathem Sep 2006

Semantic Interoperability Of Web Services - Challenges And Experiences, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Jonathan Lathem

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the rising popularity of Web services, both academia and industry have invested considerably in Web service description standards, discovery, and composition techniques. The standards based approach utilized by Web services has supported interoperability at the syntax level. However, issues of structural and semantic heterogeneity between messages exchanged by Web services are far more complex and crucial to interoperability. It is for these reasons that we recognize the value that schema/data mappings bring to Web service descriptions. In this paper, we examine challenges to interoperability; classify the types of heterogeneities that can occur between interacting services and present a possible …

Optimal Adaptation In Web Processes With Coordination Constraints, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth Sep 2006

Optimal Adaptation In Web Processes With Coordination Constraints, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service constraints that necessitate coordination. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by a manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier. Additionally, there may be compatibility constraints between the different orders, thereby introducing the problem of coordination between them if the manufacturer chooses to change the suppliers. We focus on formulating the decision making models of the managers, who must adapt to external events while satisfying …

Flexible Querying Of Xml Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni Sep 2006

Flexible Querying Of Xml Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni

Kno.e.sis Publications

Text search engines are inadequate for indexing and searching XML documents because they ignore metadata and aggregation structure implicit in the XML documents. On the other hand, the query languages supported by specialized XML search engines are very complex. In this paper, we present a simple yet flexible query language, and develop its semantics to enable intuitively appealing extraction of relevant fragments of information while simultaneously falling back on retrieval through plain text search if necessary. We also present a simple yet robust relevance ranking for heterogeneous document-centric XML.

A Survey Of Bosnian, Croatian, And Serbian Poetry In English Translation In The U.S. And Canada, Snezana Zabic, Paula Kamenish Sep 2006

A Survey Of Bosnian, Croatian, And Serbian Poetry In English Translation In The U.S. And Canada, Snezana Zabic, Paula Kamenish

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their paper "A Survey of Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian Poetry in English Translation in the U.S. and Canada," Snezana Zabic and Paula Kamenish present a survey of book-length collections and anthologies of Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian poetry in English translation published in the U.S. and in Canada. Zabic and Kamenish argue that it is necessary to determine which factors are advantegous for the survival of poetry originating in "minor" languages and transmitted to the United States and Canada. Zabic and Kamenish propose three elements that have ensured a marginal but persistent presence of South Slavic poetry in English in …

Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic Sep 2006

Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Gender Identities in the Contemporary Slovene Novel," Alojzija Zupan Sosic argues that perspectives of sexual identity have become prominent topics. Based on her library and publication research, Zupan Sosic proposes that in the period of 1990–2005 the Slovene novel is illuminated by a development of the personal or intimate story. In this development, changes of sexual identity evolve through the binary system of the heterosexual matrix whereby issues of sexual minorities remain. Important innovation in the Slovene novel include aspects connected to an identity formation determined by sexual identity where perhaps the most significant innovation is found …
