Is There A Bilingual Advantage In Phonetic And Phonological Acquisition? The Initial Learning Of Word-Final Coronal Stop Realization In A Novel Accent Of English, Laura Spinu, Jiwon Hwang, Renata Lohmann
Publications and Research
Research question: We address the question of whether the cognitive advantage of the bilingual mind, already demonstrated in the case of auditory processing or novel word acquisition, also applies to other linguistic domains, specifically to phonetic and phonological learning.
Design: We compare the performance of 17 monolinguals and 25 bilinguals from Canada in a production experiment with two tasks: imitation and spontaneous reproduction of a novel foreign accent, specifically Sussex English.
Data and analysis: To eliminate potential sources of variability, our focus is on a sound already existing in the subjects’ production (the glottal stop), but differently mapped to surface …

Techno-Apocalypse: Technology, Religion, And Ideology In Bryan Singer’S H+, Edward Brennan
Techno-Apocalypse: Technology, Religion, And Ideology In Bryan Singer’S H+, Edward Brennan
Books/Book chapters
This essay critically analyses the digital series H+. In the near future, adults who can afford them, have replaced tablets and cell phones with nanotechnology implants. The H+ implant acts as a medical diagnostic and can overlay the user's senses with a computer interface. The apocalypse comes in the form of a computer virus which infects the H+ network and instantly kills one third of humanity. The series represents the anxiety and religiosity that surrounds the possible social consequences of digital technology. It also explores the tensions and intersections between technology and faith. This essay makes the case, however, that …

Vaginal Probiotic May Help In Pregnancy, Ryan Carstons
Vaginal Probiotic May Help In Pregnancy, Ryan Carstons
The Scope
Consuming probiotics is a healthy fad that nutritionists and doctors are encouraging; eat enough, and your digestion will improve. However, millions of “good” bacteria live in us and perform healthy functions. Women, for example, have probiotics that originate in the vaginal canal. One particular kind of bacteria there may provide benefits during pregnancy.
Communication And Citizen Participation In Southern Local Politics: A Disconnect Between Municipalities And Constituents, Rachael B. Houston
Communication And Citizen Participation In Southern Local Politics: A Disconnect Between Municipalities And Constituents, Rachael B. Houston
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Despite the fact that 96 percent of all political contests in the United States are for local offices, citizens are far more likely to participate in national elections and forgo exercising their voice in local politics. And, although academic literature has focused extensively on citizen participation at the national level, local-level democracy has often been neglected. This neglect may be caused by a lack of interaction between constituencies and city mayors and managers. Without effective communication between both groups, citizens will be unaware of opportunities to affect social and fiscal policies in their communities. Scholars know little about the perceptions …

Rhetoric In The Mass Media: Terrorism Or Freedom Of Speech?, Carolyn Rhoades
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Terrorism is a widely debated topic on social media networks such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. This is due to the fact that a high percentage of users rely on sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a news source for developing stories and information. In a study conducted in 2015 by Pew Research Center, in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, research found that 63 percent of Facebook users and 63 percent Twitter users depend on these social networks for their news, which is a substantial increase from 2013. This paper presents a rhetorical analysis …
