Opening Space For Theoretical, Methodological, And Empirical Issues In Human-Machine Communication, Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn P. Edwards

Human-Machine Communication

This journal offers a space dedicated to theorizing, researching empirically, and discussing human-machine communication (HMC), a new form of communication with digital interlocutors that has recently developed and has imposed the urgency to be analyzed and understood. There is the need to properly address the model of this specific communication as well as the roles, objectives, functions, experiences, practices, and identities of the interlocutors involved, both human and digital. Reading these seven articles is an advantageous intellectual exercise for entering this new field of research on Human-Machine Communication. The present volume contributes substantially both at theoretical and empirical levels by …

Challenges Of Communicating Science: Perspectives From The Philippines, Kamila Navarro, Merryn Mckinnon Feb 2020

Challenges Of Communicating Science: Perspectives From The Philippines, Kamila Navarro, Merryn Mckinnon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Science communication research is dominated by Western countries. While their research provides insight into best practices, their findings cannot be generalized to developing countries. This study examined the science communication challenges encountered by scientists and science communicators from Manila, Philippines through an online survey and semi-structured, investigative interviews. Their answers revealed issues which have been echoed in other international studies. However, challenges of accessibility and local attitudes to science were magnified within the Philippine context. These results indicate the ubiquity of certain challenges in science communication and the need for country-specific science communication frameworks. Further research on the identified challenges …

When Paper Goes Viral: Handmade Signs As Vernacular Materiality In Digital Space, Katie Day Good Feb 2020

When Paper Goes Viral: Handmade Signs As Vernacular Materiality In Digital Space, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This article examines the role of digitally mediated handmade signs in contemporary social movements. Bringing together theories of memetic practice, vernacular authority, and material traditions, we argue that vernacular materiality occurs wherever users turn to handmade, physical messages and material signifiers to transmit meaning online. Juxtaposing the humble and personalized aesthetics of handwritten messages against the polished, programmed, and virtual aesthetics of digital media, users mobilize vernacular materiality to disrupt hegemonic spaces and narratives by harnessing the affordances of physical and social media.

An Empirically Supported Taxonomy Of Misinformation, Mark Chong, Murphy Choy Feb 2020

An Empirically Supported Taxonomy Of Misinformation, Mark Chong, Murphy Choy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Fake news, which includes both disinformation and misinformation, has been a challenge for many countries in the last few years. Disinformation has been present in modern history as part of the tool kit of PSYOPS for the military. Likewise, misinformation has been part of human history for a long time. Hoaxes, rumors, and urban legends—all of which can be classified as differing types of misinformation, although they are not commonly addressed as such—have been exploited by adversarial organizations for their own benefit. This study will propose a comprehensive taxonomy to tackle fake news, disinformation, and misinformation and assess the level …

Extrajudicial Statements And Prejudice In The Digital Age: Creating Factors To Preserve The Balance Between Attorney And State Interests In Trial Litigation, Emily R. O'Hara

William & Mary Law Review

As social media’s prevalence and usage grows within the United States, people and organizations capitalize on new media to send news to users. In 2017, 67 percent of people consumed their news from social media websites, and the rate continues to grow. Local and national news sources bring newsworthy stories to active users on social media sites such as Twitter, where users can communicate and interact with one another to promote ideas and spread information. These online accounts cover not only mundane, day-to-day news, but also salacious stories relating to civil and criminal lawsuits.

In April 2018, attorney Neal Katyal …

On June 16, 1883, Harper’s Weekly ran a story foreshadowing the transformation of the City of New York from the island of Manhattan to a massive metropolis, the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. Another article on the page announced that Martha J. Lamb “has become editor of the ‘The Magazine of American History.’” It does not mention that she was also president of the company purchasing the journal. Ten years later, just a few months after her death, Mrs. Lamb’s great work, her History of the City of New York: Its Origin, Rise, and Progress, was included in …

The Afterlives Of Government Documents: Information Labor, Archival Power, And The Visibility Of U.S. Human Rights Violations In The “War On Terror”, Rachel Daniell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is about access to information.

It examines the different ways that access to U.S. government records related to the “War on Terror” is generated through the intersection of law, bureaucratic policy and procedure norms, and the everyday work of archivists and transparency advocates. I argue that, both through their labor pushing for access to government records via complex records searches, Freedom of Information Act requests, and legal action, and also through their labor layering those records with new forms of metadata in public digital circulation platforms, these individuals, in the context of their organizations, generate new forms of …

Using Genre Theory To Reduce Mass Shootings, Meghna Israni Jan 2020

Using Genre Theory To Reduce Mass Shootings, Meghna Israni

English Student Scholarship

“Suicide contagion” is a well-established phenomenon in which highly publicized suicides are followed by a spike in the general suicide rate. In recent years, scholars have proposed a similar media contagion effect in mass shootings, a claim that’s supported by a growing body of statistical and sociological evidence. The fact that increased media coverage is linked to an increase in the probability of another mass shooting suggests that news media exercise some power over mass shootings. This paper, drawing attention to the “genres” within mass shootings, explores how news media can rewrite these narratives in order to craft a more …

Du « Romance Au Romancé » : La Transformation De L’Épopée De La Guerre Civile Espagnole Dans La Traduction D’Urgence (Décembre 1936 – Février 1937), Carole Fillière

Al-Kīmiyā

The brotherhood of French intellectuals committed to fighting fascism took shape in an unprecedented project during the winter of 1936-1937: a special issue of the journal Commune, which included translations of 24 Spanish poems published in El Mono Azul from besieged Madrid for those on the front. Conceived in urgency as a response echoing wartime action-poetry, this translation subsequently evolved into a full anthology in February 1937, Le Romancero de la guerre civile. On the translation front, intellectuals thus demonstrated solidarity by reactivating a traditional Spanish epic form: the romance. The combined effects of time constraints, the …

Lacheny, M., Rentel, N., Schwerter, Stéphanie (dir.) (2019). Errances, discordances, divergences ?

Translation has long been a pedagogical instrument of choice in the hands of the traditional method, before falling out of favor with the emergence of methods hostile to the intervention of the mother tongue in a foreign language class. As part of this tradition, and complying with a certain approach of the communicative method, the teaching of Spanish in the Ivorian second degree is marked by a strong tendency to refuse translation, especially in the evaluation. Through a survey of 270 first-year Spanish students, this contribution provides an overview of the real-life manifestations of translation in our Spanish high school …

« À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu » En Roumain. Le Patois De Françoise, Anca Lungu Gavril Jan 2020

« À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu » En Roumain. Le Patois De Françoise, Anca Lungu Gavril

Al-Kīmiyā

Part of a thesis about translating the Proustian idiolect, the article outlines the analysis of rendering patois, specific to Françoise. The two complete Romanian versions were achieved by Radu and Eugenia Cioculescu in the 60’s, and Irina Mavrodin in the 80’s. Linguistically significant for the servant class, Françoise speaks a savory French where 17th century French, patois, language faults, slang and innovations meet and overlay, making a clear analysis hard to accomplish. The article presents the expressive examples which underline translators’ disregard to idiolect, an aspect that ruins the prominent theme of the Proustian novel, the language.

التصورات الخاطئة بشأن الاختصاص في مجال الترجمة, Ahmed Alaoui, Rashid Yahiaoui Jan 2020

التصورات الخاطئة بشأن الاختصاص في مجال الترجمة, Ahmed Alaoui, Rashid Yahiaoui

Al-Kīmiyā

The article raises the question of the relationship between theory and practice by examining the requirements of communication between translators/practitioners on the one hand and trainers and academics/theorists on the other hand. It focuses on the concept of “specialization” in the Arab World and on technical translation. It highlights a wide range of misunderstandings and misconceptions among all parties involved in the field of translation. This fact results from the inadequate transfer of knowledge in translation studies as well as from the lack of involvement of professional practitioners in the knowledge production process. In order to remedy this, the article …
