An Analysis Of Intercultural Research From 2000-2019., Isabelle Kramer Aug 2020

An Analysis Of Intercultural Research From 2000-2019., Isabelle Kramer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the last twenty years, advancements in information and communications technologies have fundamentally altered the face of intercultural communication (Shuter, 2011). While there is significant research regarding the impact of new media on intercultural communication, there is no published research that discusses the ways in which intercultural scholarship in the academic context has adapted to the evolving social media landscape. I will be conducting a content analysis on all intercultural articles published on the EBSCO database “Communication and Mass Media Complete” between January 2000 and January 2019. This research will illuminate trends in intercultural communications studies over the past twenty …

Teleboard: The Move To A Virtual Family Advisory Board, Sheryl Chadwick, Deejo Miller, Kathryn Taff, Amanda Montalbano

Patient Experience Journal

Restrictions on in-person meetings were going to hamper the ability for the well-established Family Advisory Board (FAB) for our pediatric hospital to continue meeting unless a virtual meeting platform was introduced. The FAB was moved to a virtual platform for the April and May 2020 meetings. Attendance rates from family members and staff were measured and compared to the previous 14 in-person meetings. Contributions during the virtual meetings from each attendee type were recorded to analyze engagement during virtual meetings. There was no statistical difference in average attendance for virtual compared to in-person meetings, 75% versus 64.3% for family members …

The efforts taking place in healthcare organizations and communities globally should represent what is best in humanity, perhaps even more so in this unprecedented time of COVID-19. Trying To Save The Game(R): Understanding The Self-Disclosure Of Youtube Subscribers Surrounding Mental Health In Video-Game Vlog Comments, Maria Mickles, Andrea Mm Weare

Communication Faculty Publications

This study analyzed the self-disclosure of YouTube subscribers surrounding mental health and their relationship with YouTube gamer co-hosts Dan Avidan and Arin Hanson of the channel Game Grumps. Via 10 subscriber interviews, this study sheds light on viewers’ motivations to subscribe to Game Grumps and to self-disclose mental-health struggles and what the implications for disclosing on YouTube are. Results revealed two overarching motivations and implications that embody mental-health disclosure on social media: (a) subscribers disclose a variety of mental-health experiences and provide the language to “own” them in a public space online and (b) disclosures make visible some subscribers’ coping …

#Notokay: Challenging Sexual Violence Through Digital Health Activism, Roma Subramanian, Andrea Mm Weare

Communication Faculty Publications

An analysis of #notokay tweets revealed that tweets constructed a grassroots health activist discourse that made visible the ‘invisible’ pervasiveness of sexual assault by encouraging women to disclose assault in a digital space of affective solidarity. The campaign captured a multiplicity of embodied assault experiences, dispelled rape myths, and challenged and broadened mainstream conceptualizations of assault. It aimed at transformative change by politicizing the public health issue of sexual violence by highlighting the socioenvironmental determinants of assault – a patriarchal culture that condones and fosters violence against women and does not prioritize women’s health. By offering rich qualitative data on …

Microcelebrity Endorsement Of Public Relations Campaigns For Nonprofit Organizations: A Study Of Snapchat In Saudi Arabia, Sami Altuwayjiri

Dissertations

This research investigates the influence of Snapchat microcelebrity endorsement for nonprofit organizations’ PR campaigns through testing the self-disclosure model, source attractiveness model, and congruence or fit model in relation to individuals’ donation intentions and attitudes toward the endorsement. This paper has highlighted the effectiveness of the three models through testing each model three times via three endorsements featuring three different microcelebrities. The result of the survey suggests that self-disclosure practiced by the endorsing microcelebrity has a weak influence on peoples’ donation intention and attitude towards the endorsement. However, physical attractiveness of the endorsing microcelebrity has an influence on people’s donation …

Social Media Influencers: Who They Are And How They Influence, Samra Karamustafic, Taylor Stockmaster, Skye Palladina, Aurora Harris, Richard M. Perloff

Student Scholarship

This paper extends research on persuasion and social media communication by reporting the results of a content analysis of 10 leading social media influencers, an untapped empirical issue in the field. Findings, offering insights into the particular communicator attributes influencers emphasize, were based on coding 121 videos of female beauty and lifestyle influencers. Influencers deploy a variety of communication strategies to engage followers, harnessing everyday behaviors, using colloquial terms, expressing emotions, showing vulnerabilities (in socially skilled ways), and strategically promoting products. Interestingly, when influencers mentioned the coronavirus, they did so as to emphasize its relevance to their personal life, rather …

Uncertainty Reduction In Initial Interactions, Melissa Cabrera Aug 2020

Uncertainty Reduction In Initial Interactions, Melissa Cabrera

McNair Summer Research Program

Uncertainty reduction strategies are among the most fundamental motivations for human communication. When interacting with new people, uncertainty reduction is a crucial tool people use to learn about that person and determine what their relationship will be like. Research related to the strategies that humans use to reduce uncertainty typically focus on initial interactions and the early stages of relationships. Many recent studies tend to focus on the comparison between computer mediated communication and in-person interactions. In contrast, the current project focuses on the strategies people are most likely to employ when they are working to reduce uncertainty in face-to-face …

Service Animals (S.As.) are becoming more common throughout the United States and are seen more frequently on college campuses. This study uncovers the lived experiences of S.A. handlers on college campuses nationwide, to further understand the exclusion or inclusion that S.A. handlers experience throughout their everyday life. Utilizing Critical Disability Theory and Organizational Communication lenses through a series of open-ended questions, this study analyzes a handler’s experience with their S.A. Adopting a qualitative lens, I conducted one on one interviews. It filled a need for academia as present research on S.As. typically focuses on quantitative research. I was able to …

Redeeming The Monster: The God Of War Subreddit's Narrative Of Rebirth For Hegemonic Masculinity, Mario Sanders

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In a 2019 documentary on the development of the video game God of War (2018) for the Playstation 4, Cory Barlog, the game’s creative director, openly discusses his desire to give the toxic, hypermasculine protagonist, Kratos, a “second chance” after nearly a decade since the franchise’s previous installment. In giving Kratos his second chance, Barlog decided to make him a father, claiming that becoming a father changes one’s perspective on everything. Video games scholars have argued that games are a noteworthy element of players’ identities and interactions due to their promotion of the manufacture of player narratives. The following research …

Cultivating And Reporting Of Campus Threats, Louis K. Falk, Douglas Stoves, Audrey W. Falk, Hilda Silva Aug 2020

Cultivating And Reporting Of Campus Threats, Louis K. Falk, Douglas Stoves, Audrey W. Falk, Hilda Silva

Communication Faculty Publications

The consumption of media has been established as one of the elements responsible for changing the general population’s perceptions. Specifically, cultivation theory (depending on the amount of media use) points to an enhanced representation of a characterization conveyed through the media. This depiction has the potential to create an inaccurate portrayal (stereotype) leading to an increased level of anxiety. The proliferation of reported incidents (real or perceived) associated with mass shootings in the U.S. over the last 20 years is an example. This paper traces the relatively recent coverage of mass shootings in the U.S. by the media and the …

Discretionary Dissemination On Twitter, Richard M. Crowley, Wenli Huang, Hai Lu Aug 2020

Discretionary Dissemination On Twitter, Richard M. Crowley, Wenli Huang, Hai Lu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using an unsupervised machine learning approach to analyze 12.8 million tweets posted by S&P 1500 firms from 2012 to 2016, we find that firms tweet more financial information around significantly negative or positive earnings announcements or accounting filings. Specifically, we observe a symmetric U-shaped relation between the number of financial tweets and the materiality of accounting information events. This relation is consistent with the theoretical prediction in Hummel et al. (2018) which assumes that managers are sensitive to their firm’s fundamental value. We document that this relation also holds for hyperlink usage in tweets about financial information around important events, …

Age-Specific Posting: Tailoring Social Media Post To Audience Age, Owen Bridges Aug 2020

Age-Specific Posting: Tailoring Social Media Post To Audience Age, Owen Bridges

Undergraduate Research Journal

With social media becoming the best way to get the word out about something, advertisers have been trying to break the code on how to market their products successfully. The hard part about social media marketing is figuring out what the target audience is for said product. In this study, women’s fashion brands are examined to see if big companies are taking advantage of age targeting through their social media posts. After doing some research, a study like this couldn’t be found. The hypothesis for this study was that each brand would tailor all of their posts towards different social …

Powerful Men: An Evaluation Of Successful Rhetoric, Rachel Hollenbeck Aug 2020

Powerful Men: An Evaluation Of Successful Rhetoric, Rachel Hollenbeck

Undergraduate Research Journal

This study examines the rhetoric of Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill and why it was so successful. Both men are famous for their rhetoric, but this study is a more in-depth look at how they spoke well and influenced people. Through the lens of Lloyd F. Bitzer’s “The Rhetorical Situation” and the classical rhetorical appeals, multiple details of Hitler and Churchill’s speeches are brought to attention and analyzed, especially how their responses fit the situations they were facing, how they connected with their audiences, and how their wording matched the goals they were trying to achieve. One of the purposes …

During adolescence, youth are undergoing the process of identity development and self-esteem is an important part of this development. During this developmental period, adolescents’ self-esteem is likely to be affected by the feedback they receive online through social media sites. There is limited research available that specifically evaluated the impact …

Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala Aug 2020

Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

In a Web plagued by disappearing resources, Web archive collections provide a valuable means of preserving Web resources important to the study of past events. These archived collections start with seed URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) hand-selected by curators. Curators produce high quality seeds by removing non-relevant URIs and adding URIs from credible and authoritative sources, but this ability comes at a cost: it is time consuming to collect these seeds. The result of this is a shortage of curators, a lack of Web archive collections for various important news events, and a need for an automatic system for generating seeds. …
