Accepting Change, Eliane S. Markoff Nov 2020

Accepting Change, Eliane S. Markoff

Office of the Ombuds

Whether change in the workplace is welcomed or not, most would agree that it is inevitable. Admittedly, it could be disruptive and painful for both employees and managers. Leaving our comfort zones can be anxiety producing and disruptive, especially in the short term. But change can also lead to personal growth and greater job satisfaction for both employees and managers. If change is welcomed, employees become engaged and even excited to move forward as they implement a new strategy and meet the shared goals ahead.

Trust, Ethnicity, And Political Approval In 21st Century South Africa, Alecia Anderson, Jonathan Bruce Santo Nov 2020

Trust, Ethnicity, And Political Approval In 21st Century South Africa, Alecia Anderson, Jonathan Bruce Santo

International Dialogue

Trust is a requirement for state legitimacy, however, the relationship between trust and political approval in South Africa is under-investigated, leaving the legitimacy of the South African state questionable. In this study, we use Afrobarometer data from 2004, 2008, and 2012 to investigate citizens’ perspectives on trust and political approval. Using structural equation modeling, we analyze the impact of ethnicity on the relationship between trust and political approval in South Africa. The results are clear that ethnic identity continues to influence the relationship between trust and approval of political offices and policies in South Africa.

For A Left Populism, Emma Murphy Nov 2020

For A Left Populism, Emma Murphy

International Dialogue

Chantal Mouffe’s brief work For a Left Populism sets out to tackle the issue of how left politics should respond to the global trend towards populism. While elections in recent years have ushered in populist leaders in states ranging from the Philippines to the United States, Mouffe focuses her analysis on Western European populism specifically. Her argument centres on the importance of recovering democracy in an increasingly “post-democratic” world; to successfully radicalise democracy, Mouffe argues, leftists must first reform existing political institutions. While Mouffe makes an original argument for a reclamation of the term ‘populism’ by a leftist audience, the …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This document is a review of recent social and behavior change-focused program literature focusing on the integration of gender considerations into health and non-health social and behavior change interventions. The review revealed eight promising practices: employing a gender perspective throughout the program cycle to improve outcomes; synchronizing gender strategies to ensure inclusion of men and women, boys and girls; addressing gendered health disparities that affect service use; reducing harmful traditional practices; ensuring community involvement and accountability for promotion of gender equality; considering gender during emergency preparedness and response; accounting for intersecting gendered vulnerabilities that influence health and development outcomes; and …

Coupled Hierarchical Transformer For Stance-Aware Rumor Verification In Social Media Conversations, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Rui Xia Nov 2020

Coupled Hierarchical Transformer For Stance-Aware Rumor Verification In Social Media Conversations, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Rui Xia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The prevalent use of social media enables rapid spread of rumors on a massive scale, which leads to the emerging need of automatic rumor verification (RV). A number of previous studies focus on leveraging stance classification to enhance RV with multi-task learning (MTL) methods. However, most of these methods failed to employ pre-trained contextualized embeddings such as BERT, and did not exploit inter-task dependencies by using predicted stance labels to improve the RV task. Therefore, in this paper, to extend BERT to obtain thread representations, we first propose a Hierarchical Transformer1 , which divides each long thread into shorter subthreads, …

A Tripartite Model Of Trust In Facebook: Acceptance Of Information Personalization, Privacy Concern, And Privacy Literacy, Sonny Rosenthal, Ole-Christian Wasenden, Gorm-Andreas Gronnevet, Rich Ling Nov 2020

A Tripartite Model Of Trust In Facebook: Acceptance Of Information Personalization, Privacy Concern, And Privacy Literacy, Sonny Rosenthal, Ole-Christian Wasenden, Gorm-Andreas Gronnevet, Rich Ling

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study draws on the mental accounting perspective and a tripartite model of trust to explain why users trust Facebook. We argue that trust in Facebook is related to (1) trust in companies that collect personal data, (2) acceptance of information personalization, (3) low privacy concern, and (4) low privacy literacy. Further, we argue that privacy literacy amplifies the relationship between privacy concern and the other factors. This is because, among individuals with high privacy literacy, privacy concern is especially diagnostic of the potential harms of a loss of privacy. These arguments align broadly with theorizations about factors influencing privacy-related …

American Little Magazines Since 1950: Charting Many Histories, Thom Caraway Oct 2020

American Little Magazines Since 1950: Charting Many Histories, Thom Caraway

The Review Review

As lit mag enthusiasts know, Little Magazines cuts off in 1947. It details the magazines of the Modernist period quite well, as several other excellent comprehensive resources do. The three-volume Oxford Cultural History series on literary magazines details the work of various little magazines in the US, UK, Europe, and Ireland, but gets no further than 1950. Tri-Quarterly’s excellent “documentary” issue of 1978 surveys several editors of significant magazines in the intervening period, and they provide engaging statements of purpose, origin stories, and “biographical” sketches of their particular magazines. More recent volumes like Spreading the Word, Paper Dreams …

During Turbulent Times, A Reminder: The Ground Beneath Us Has Always Been Shifting, Jeffrey Dodd

The Review Review

This issue of The Review Review is being released at a remarkable time here in the United States, where we’re based.

  • Global pandemic?
  • Most divisive U.S. election season in living memory?
  • Editor gets Covid?
  • Uncertain economic future due, in large part, to those first two items?
All the checks. And those highlights say nothing of related and distinct turmoils around the world. So, what we’re doing here in our humble corner of the web may go unnoticed by writers, readers, and editors who are focused on navigating such turbulence. However, I am excited about what we are offering in this …

Journal’S Contest Issue Presents Surprising Array Of Narrative Poetry; Review Of Naugatuck River Review, Issue 23, Jeffrey Dodd

The Review Review

Many fine literary magazines benefit from regular turnover in editorial staff, and sometimes editorial vision. Such is often the case with journals housed in university writing programs, where ever-new cohorts of students bring renewed energy and aesthetic interests. This often allows for new voices to make their way onto a journal’s pages. If there’s a downside to that model, other than the amount of onboarding work and potential lost institutional memory associated with regularly revolving leadership, it is that a journal’s identity can sometimes become confused. This is not the case with Naugatuck River Review, a journal of narrative …

Open-End Questions: Exploring The Qualitative Nature Of Our Quantitative Studies, Edward Jeff Daniel Jr. Oct 2020

Open-End Questions: Exploring The Qualitative Nature Of Our Quantitative Studies, Edward Jeff Daniel Jr.

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

The role of research in forensics is a wide and varied one. As with most social science research methods, the trend in forensics has turned from primarily case study/observational research to a mass of empirical data. Our quantitative studies have many problems from sample and questionnaire design to inappropriate or inaccurate statistical analysis. One of the basic reasons that these problems abound is that non-researchers are assigned the task of research. While it would be impossible to tackle all of the problems in the quantitative surveys done in the field of forensics, one of the best ways to improve the …

The Role Of Research In Individual Speaking Events, Colan T. Hanson Oct 2020

The Role Of Research In Individual Speaking Events, Colan T. Hanson

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

As school administrators face increasing pressure to provide a rigorous rationale for funding requests and a strong accounting of the benefits from funds expended, the forensic community will need to adopt an offensive posture, if the activities program is to remain a vital part of the overall communication program. Therefore in adopting an affirming stance, the forensic community will need a viable data base to sustain its case. The need for integrating an active research component into the life space of the forensic community is rapidly becoming a necessity. To help the forensic community sustain itself, not only is there …

Third, I offer innovative ways of approaching high school programs. Fourth, I discuss how to cope with the diversity of students a successful high school/college connection would attract to not only the major urban university, but to the forensic community at large. The High School/College Connetion In Individual Events, Charles John Mcgeever Oct 2020

The High School/College Connetion In Individual Events, Charles John Mcgeever

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

One of the problems for the twentieth century mind, asserts Walter J. Ong in his text. Some Proligemina for Cultural and Religious History. is that it has devalued orality and become a prisoner of the culture in which the twentieth-century mind has tried to mature. "Contemporary man," states Ong, "finds it exceedingly difficult and, in many instances, quite impossible, to sense what the spoken word actually is. He feels it is a modification of something which ought to be written" (19). Not only does contemporary man find print alien from the idiolect of homo dicens. but also he finds the …
