Lost In Translation: South Asian Muslim Women's Interpretation Of Religious Gender Role Expectations, Women's Agency, And Women's Identity, Tamanna Tasmin
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates South Asian Muslim women’s interpretation of religious scripture and the women’s agency to influence the contemporary patriarchal religious culture. Previous research indicates that the religious customs of the region follow traditional orthodox Islamic scripture that promotes patriarchal practices, yielding barriers for women in the family, education, and professional sectors. Based on an understanding of the religious education system, the history of traditional orthodox Islamic practice, and traditional gender role expectations of the region, I use structuration theory to understand South Asian Muslim women’s identity negotiation and the agency they perceive regarding their ability to influence the society. …

Balancing Act: When Gender And Media Collide In Sports, Kimberly Friedman
LSU Master's Theses
Women’s Gymnastics is one of the most popular events at the Summer Olympic Games and media coverage of the team provides a unique perspective on women’s athletics, as gymnastics is traditionally considered a feminine sport. Utilizing a discourse analysis, this thesis examines the newspaper coverage received by the team in the last 25 years. This thesis explores the narratives regarding gender within the coverage and additionally explores how abuse narratives were discussed in news media throughout theses years. Bong Joon Ho, Okja (2017): Wounding The Feelings, Nagehan Uzuner
Bong Joon Ho, Okja (2017): Wounding The Feelings, Nagehan Uzuner
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Okja is a cute fictitious pig which is created in the laboratory as a solution for the meat industry to prevent hunger, which is one of the important problems of our contemporary century and the near future of the humanity. This pig-like, depicted as an ecological food source of the industrial society, is commodified for the mediation of the spheres within the society. Okja, as a film, falls within the intersections of food industry, feminism, orientalism, mediatization and globalization concepts. I try to understand and redefine the movie through contradictions such as East-West, women-men, good-evil. The review reexamines multiple interacting …
Mapping Meaning At The Crossroads Of Crisis: Narratives Of Renewal In The Midst Of The Opioid Epidemic, Preston Carmack
Mapping Meaning At The Crossroads Of Crisis: Narratives Of Renewal In The Midst Of The Opioid Epidemic, Preston Carmack
Graduate Student Research Symposium
This study explores the role of meaning in a crisis situation by using Viktor Frankl’s tripod of meaning and Matthew Seeger and Timothy Sellnow’s narratives of renewal. Drawing from focus groups conducted in a large mid-Atlantic city where community members are embedded in the middle of the opioid crisis, the findings suggest that resiliency in the face of crisis can be encouraged to take root through a mapping of meaning that highlights gratitude and responsibility.

Communicating Covid-19 Vaccines: Lessons From The Dengue Vaccine Controversy In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Vincen Gregory Yu
Development Studies Faculty Publications
As countries around the world begin to roll out COVID-19 vaccines; vaccine safety communication is more relevant than ever. The dengue vaccine controversy in the Philippines offers lessons that can be applied to immunisation programmes being organised today to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective vaccine safety communication entails (re)building relationships of trust between government and the public; upholding the credibility of scientific institutions and maintaining transparency. It also involves viewing health against the broader framework of equity; using an interdisciplinary approach to health communication and putting a premium on public feedback.

Journalism And Numeracy In Context: Four Case Studies, Steven Harrison
Journalism And Numeracy In Context: Four Case Studies, Steven Harrison
Numeracy
Although research into the relationship between quantitative literacy (QL) and news reporting is sparse, the consensus among researchers is that journalists tend not to place QL very highly among their professional values and that journalism suffers as a consequence. This paper is an attempt to provide concrete examples of the ways in which news reports systemically misinterpret, misrepresent, or misuse numerical data as part of the reporting process. Drawing on scenarios ranging from elections and healthcare to the mundane world of food preparation, it shows how a lack of rigour in the fields of reporting and news production can lead …

Finding Renewal In The Midst Of Disaster: The Case Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Andrew S. Pyle, Robert R. Ulmer
Publications
In 2010, the United States experienced the worst environmental disaster in its history. An explosion on a BP oilrig located in the Gulf of Mexico triggered the crisis. As a result, the United States coast guard and BP were charged with crisis communication in its response to the crisis. This essay provides an unprecedented examination and analysis of the communication experiences of public information officers who worked in the unified command center in Houma, Louisiana during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. The authors use the discourse of renewal theory to understand the communication practices and choices of the public …
