Whole Farm Analysis Of Low-Input Sustainable Farming Systems Using An Extension Farm Financial Management Package, Mark Leddy, Thomas Dobbs, Burton Pflueger
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Farmers in recent years have been faced with economic hardships and an increasing awareness of the environmental impacts of conventional farming practices. These factors have led many farmers to consider "alternative" farming methods and practices to replace conventional farming practices. "Alternative" systems include those going by a variety of labels, not all of which always mean the same thing. Terms used include regenerative sustainable, low-input, and organic, among others. A recently established research and education program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture uses the term "low-input/sustainable agriculture" ("LISA"). The LISA program contrasts conventional and alternative or low-input/sustainable farming systems in …

International Lending To The Third World, Mark Leddy
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The main emphasis of this paper is on the debt repayment difficulties experienced by the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) in the 1980's. These difficulties are a result of a combination of factors which have led to large accumulations of debt in these countries. The outstanding debt of the LDCs increased from $152 billion in 1975 to $850- $875 billion in 1985 (Meltzer, 1987). According to Dale and Mattione (1983), the major reasons country borrowers pursue foreign loans are: (1) Such loans allow both governments and companies to finance investments that will increase income or exports; (2) Foreign loans offer countries …

Lenders' Perception Of Borrower Participation In Crop Insurance Programs, Burton Pflueger, Brian Schmiesing
Lenders' Perception Of Borrower Participation In Crop Insurance Programs, Burton Pflueger, Brian Schmiesing
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The objective of this study was to provide insight to a crop insurance marketing question not previously studied – the viewpoint of lenders financing the premiums for Federal Crop Insurance. The viewpoint of lenders as to the extent of which their producers were participating in a crop insurance program could indicate the current and projected levels of participation, the extent to which lenders regard crop insurance programs as cost effective risk reducing strategies, and reasons for low participation. Thus, a survey of lenders was conducted to address the question of lenders' reaction to borrower participation in crop insurance programs.

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The major objective of the research performed under this WAPA Conservation and Renewable Energy contract is to determine if electric rate structures can be used to provide incentives to irrigators to make more efficient and or reduced use of electric power. A companion objective is to examine possibilities for electric rate structures to provide incentive for irrigators to use more electric energy for pumping irrigation water.
