Planetor: Review And Application, John Cole, Burton Pflueger
Planetor: Review And Application, John Cole, Burton Pflueger
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Farmers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental consequences of farming practices that have become "conventional" over the last 30 to 40 years. As agricultural producers, they are expressing concern about erosion, ground water contamination, and personal health considerations from chemical use. At the same time, farmers are concerned about the economic viability of their operations. Farmers cannot afford to sacrifice net farm incomes in order to meet stricter environmental regulations. A new software package named Planetor has been developed that can be used to examine the interrelationship between economic sustainability and environmental safety. Researchers working on the Big Sioux …

Impacts Of Rising Energy Prices On The Attractiveness Of Sustainable Farming Systems, Thomas Dobbs, John Cole
Impacts Of Rising Energy Prices On The Attractiveness Of Sustainable Farming Systems, Thomas Dobbs, John Cole
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
After several years of relatively stable energy prices during the middle-and late-1980s, events of late-1990 in the Middle East reawakened concerns about rising energy prices. Between July 1990, prior to Iraq's August invasion of Kuwait, and October 1990, diesel fuel prices increased by 77 percent. Natural gas, a major factor of production in urea fertilizer, also experienced price increases last fall in the aftermath of Iraq's invasion. Urea prices were affected by these higher natural gas prices. Moreover, Iraq and Kuwait supplied 7 percent of the world's urea prior to last fall and also provided fuel oil for fertilizer plants …

Women In Agriculture: Balancing Family And Farm: Summary Of The 1991 Conference, Rebecca Lafferty, Burton Pflueger
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The success of the first "Women in Agriculture" conference, entitled "Challenging The Future", has the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service to develop the second program entitled "Balancing Family and Farm". The first conference was designed to provide women with the incentive to challenge the future of agriculture while the second conference was designed to help women learn how to balance their family life with the business of farming or ranching. The second "Women in Agriculture" (WIA) conference was held in Pierre, South Dakota in March, 1991. The overall goal of the conference was to provide women with an opportunity to …
Effects Of Including Alfalfa In Whole-Farm Plans: Comparison Of Conventional, Ridge Till, And Alternative Farming Systems, Clarence Mends, Thomas Dobbs
Effects Of Including Alfalfa In Whole-Farm Plans: Comparison Of Conventional, Ridge Till, And Alternative Farming Systems, Clarence Mends, Thomas Dobbs
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
South Dakota State University (SDSU) has been conducting research trials since 1985 at its Northeast Research Station (near Watertown, S.D. ) to compare various conventional , reduced tillage , and low chemical input ("alternative") farming systems . In one set of comparisons, Conventional and Ridge Till systems consisting of rotated corn, soybeans , and spring wheat are compared with an Alternative (no purchased chemical input) system consisting of rotated oats , alfalfa , soybeans, and corn. The alfalfa is just harvested one year (the year after under seeding in oats) in this system . Economics results for the first 5 …
Family Farms: Farming Shaping Their Future, Larry Janssen
Family Farms: Farming Shaping Their Future, Larry Janssen
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
We are living in times of rapid change in agriculture and in rural America. Interstate highways, livestock confinement systems, pesticides, fourwheel drive tractors and personal computers are innovations that did not exist or were seldom seen 30 - 35 years ago. Rural America has changed a great deal from the time I was raised on a 320 acre Nebraska farm, driving 25 hp. Ford SN tractors, and going to a one-room country school! In times of rapid changes, many people are concerned about the future of agriculture and family farms. Today, I will share with you my perspectives on the …
Sustainable Agriculture Development In China: Report Of A Field Visit, Donald Taylor
Sustainable Agriculture Development In China: Report Of A Field Visit, Donald Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
China has a rich history of agricultural production practices involving the intensive and regenerative use of her soil and other natural resources. The challenge of having to feed a population in excess of 1 billion people that continues to grow and has become more well-to-do, especially in the last decade, is awesome. Because of intense pressure for added food production, China has been forced to shift toward the heavy use of externally-produced, purchased inputs to complement her traditional internally-produced inputs and farming practices. China's farming communities that once were largely self-sufficient now have many, varied linkages with the "outside world." …
Sustainable Agriculture Policy Analyses: South Dakota On- Farm Case Studies, Thomas Dobbs, David Becker, Donald Taylor
Sustainable Agriculture Policy Analyses: South Dakota On- Farm Case Studies, Thomas Dobbs, David Becker, Donald Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The efficacies of farming systems in the United States (U.S.) are increasingly being judged by both environmental and economic sustainability criteria. Taxpayers are becoming more insistent that agricultural production systems be compatible with environmental goals; the 1985 Food Security Act and the pending 1990 Federal farm bill place environmental constraints on farming practices as conditions for receiving farm program benefits. Farmers themselves are increasingly concerned about the environmental consequences of particular farming practices which have become "conventional" over the past 30 to 40 years. They are concerned about soil erosion. groundwater contamination by pesticides and fertilizers. and possible human health …
Typical Farm Theory In Agricultural Research, Dillon Feuz, Melvin Skold
Typical Farm Theory In Agricultural Research, Dillon Feuz, Melvin Skold
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Economists, farm managers, financial advisors and policy makers frequently need to conduct farm level analyses. There is a continual need to evaluate changing technologies, government farm program effects, and changing market conditions at the farm level. The implications of changing financial conditions, policy options or technological alternatives must be understood at the farm level for educational programs to be designed or for necessary policy incentives to be offered to achieve the desired income support, supply response, or shifts in resource use. When conducting farm level research, one is always faced with difficult decisions concerning the type of data on which …
Economic Analysis Of Rangeland Leasing Practices And Rates, Larry Janssen, Martin Beutler, John Cole
Economic Analysis Of Rangeland Leasing Practices And Rates, Larry Janssen, Martin Beutler, John Cole
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Major Characteristics of 444 rangeland leasing arrangements used by South Dakota ranchers were examined. Econometric modeling results indicate lease rates per acre from 1986-1988 are explained by tract productivity (AUM's), tract size, regional location, selected leasing practices, and by type of lease (private, state, tribal trust, or federal).
Women In Agriculture: Challenging The Future: Summary Of The 1990 Conference, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty
Women In Agriculture: Challenging The Future: Summary Of The 1990 Conference, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The first "Women in Agriculture" conference (WIA) was held in South Dakota in March, 1990. The conference was designed to enhance the woman's role as part of the farm/ranch management team. The conference was well attended and the final evaluations reveal a high level of satisfaction and a desire for continuation of the program. Two counties in South Dakota have created "spinoffs" from the program. Hutchinson County has a support group of farm women that gather on a regular basis. Davison County is currently planning a program that is also designed to enhance farm management skills directed specifically at women. …
The Economic Value Of Grazing Public Lands In Western South Dakota, Martin Beutler
The Economic Value Of Grazing Public Lands In Western South Dakota, Martin Beutler
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
South Dakota has relatively few acres of public rangeland when compared to other western states. However, public grazing in South Dakota can have a major impact on local area economies in which public grazing occurs. Total harvested AUMs have declined over the study period. The total value of public land grazing has climbed mainly due to higher cattle prices. In 1988, South Dakota public lands participated in the production of approximately $35 million in gross livestock production. This gross production generated an estimated $66 million in economic activity to the region. In 1988, public lands accounted for an estimated $22.8 …

Farm Program Participation And Policy Perspectives Of Sustainable Farmers In South Dakota, Thomas Dobbs, David Becker, Donald Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The practices and views regarding farm policy of more than twenty low-input/sustainable farmers in South Dakota are reported in this paper. First, the source of information for this paper is briefly described. Then, the farmers' participation in Federal commodity programs and their views on Federal farm program conservation compliance provisions are presented. Subsequently, the farmers' views on desired changes in Federal farm programs and on desired State and local government actions to promote sustainable agriculture are reported. Plans for SDSU sustainable agriculture policy analyses are briefly indicated at the end of the paper.
Linkages Between Prices Of Agriculture Commodities And Processed Final Products, Bashir Qasmi, Brian Schmiesing
Linkages Between Prices Of Agriculture Commodities And Processed Final Products, Bashir Qasmi, Brian Schmiesing
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This paper presents an introductory discussion o f the linkages between the price of the primary commodity and the products produced from the primary commodity. First, a case is discussed where the primary commodity is processed into an intermediate product and then into a final product. As in this case, at each successive stage of processing, the transformation results in only one product. This case is referred to as the single product case. In the second case the primary commodity is processed into two products simultaneously in a fixed proportion. This case is the joint product case.

Planning For Tomorrow-Today: A Financial Management Program For South Dakota Agricultural Producers, 1985- 1988, Burton Pflueger
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
As conditions in the ag economy worsened the early 1980s, it became apparent that m any farmers and ranchers were crisis managing their operations. They responded to situations as they developed, instead of anticipating changes and preparing ways to cope. The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service (SDCES) realized crisis-managing would be disastrous for many producers and recognized a need for educational programs to help producers manage the crisis. The Planning For Tomorrow Today (PTT) program was developed by the SDCES to meet this need. PTT was designed to be used by any producer, whether he was experiencing financial difficulties or …
Management Practices Of Successful Family Farms, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty
Management Practices Of Successful Family Farms, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
"Success" has constantly been a difficult word to define both for family-farm managers as well for those individuals who work closely with them . Past research in successful farm management have tried to measure success through a wide variety of factors: profitability, achieving personal goals, farm survival, farm growth, and financial measures of success such as accumulated wealth or annual profitability. More recently, a successful farm operator could also be classified as successful if he was able to achieve the objectives or goals set forth for his operation. Therein lies the conflict. If a farm operators goals for successful management …
