Determinants Of Physicians' Brain Drain In Egypt, Mennatallah Elbeheiry Jan 2025

Determinants Of Physicians' Brain Drain In Egypt, Mennatallah Elbeheiry

Theses and Dissertations

Egypt is enduring a significant shortage of physicians, despite the annual graduation of approximately 10,000 medical students from its 27 medical schools. In 2016, the physician density was alarmingly low, with only one doctor per 12,285 people. This shortage is exacerbated by a physicians’ brain drain, as Egypt is a leading exporter of physicians to countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. As of 2020, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate reported 212,835 registered physicians, yet 56 percent of them work abroad, and only about 62,000 are actively employed in public hospitals, serving a population of over 110 million. The government’s efforts …

Under The Bay: Analysis Of Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Dive Behavior In The Urban San Diego Bay, Emily Carter

Theses

Sea turtles are air-breathing marine reptiles that spend their lives performing dives to travel, forage, and rest. Several dive types have been previously recorded for sea turtles, each type being associated with a different set of behaviors. U-dives, or Type 1 dives are widely characterized by extensive benthic periods preceded by and concluding with abrupt descent and ascent phases respectively (Minamikawa et al. 1997; Houghton et al. 2002; Seminoff et al. 2006). These dives are widely affiliated with turtle resting behavior though can be indicative of additional activities including benthic travel and foraging. Previous research of green turtle dive behavior …

The Canyon Revisited-A Rephotography Of The Grand Canyon 1923/1991, By Donald L. Baars And Rex C. Buchanan, Allen Cichanski

The Geographical Bulletin

What an interesting and remarkable little book based on a very clever premiseto duplicate as closely as possible in 1991 the extensive photographic record of the 1923, Birdseye-USGS Expedition through the Grand Canyon. From the time of the first expedition through the Grand Canyon in 1868 by John Wesley Powell until 1923, only 29 explorers had endured the hardships of boat travel down the Colorado through the full length of the Canyon. A far greater number of climbers have reached the summit of Mt. Everest as of today! Are there many or even any places left on Earth today that …

Rainfall Distribution Along Coastal Guyana, 1901-1980, Robert Ramraj

The Geographical Bulletin

Data over an 80-year period from Georgetown, Guyana were analyzed to determine rainfall patterns along the coastal plain. Data revealed that two distinct wet and two dry seasons occur annually and that a high probability exists that annual rainfall almost never surpasses nor lags behind that of the previous year for more than two consecutive years. Additionally, it is concluded that rainfall was heavier during 1941-1980 than during the previous 40 years, and that interannual and interdecadal variability existed during the study period . Apart from their practical application in planning and water resource management, studies of this nature can …

Urban Poverty And The Underclass Revisited: "Debates Within" The Underclass Debate., Eugene J. Palka Jan 2025

Urban Poverty And The Underclass Revisited: "Debates Within" The Underclass Debate., Eugene J. Palka

The Geographical Bulletin

Urban poverty and the "underclass" remain politically and emotionally charged topics among academicians and political analysts concerned with American urban affairs. Geographers, however, have not been central to the main debates. The latter trend is perplexing, given the spatially concentrated nature of the underclass problem. This paper provides a synthetic review of the urban underclass concept and a distillation of the underclass debate in order to describe the complex and multifaceted problems associated with the urban underclass, and to illuminate themes which may be of interest to geographers. Urban poverty is more concentrated today, and hence, more geographically distinct than …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comments: Geography And Other Disciplines, Gilbert F. White

The Geographical Bulletin

Being a geographer often carries with it the opportunities, pleasures and burdens of working with colleagues from other disciplines. Those opportunities may come in teaching a shared class, in pursuing an inter-departmental curriculum, in carrying out research, or in addressing an issue of public policy. I have shared in all those ways, beginning as a green young graduate student working with engineers, economists, and foresters in a cooperative study. Always I have enjoyed new ideas and methods. Sometimes I have helped other disciplines gain strength from geography. And occasionally it has been frustrating to see geographic ideas ignored. The latter …
