Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comments. Term Papers Or Theses Or Whatever Without Chaos, John F. Lounsbury
The Geographical Bulletin
Most geography students at the college level will become involved in a research project of some sort at some time in their academic careers. There are several ways that this might occur. For example, there are term papers for specific courses and senior theses at the undergraduate level, and pressure problems, master's theses and Ph.D. dissertations at the graduate level. Further, on occasions students will prepare research papers to be given at a meeting of a professional society or to be submitted to a professional or semi-professional journal for publication. Also, graduate students may write proposals for funding or to …

“It’S A Constant Wear And Tear”: Trans Visibility As Educational Labour In The Neoliberal School, Bishop Owis, Harper Keenan, Lee Iskander, Mario I. Suárez, Mollie Mcquillan, Christina Cook, Daniel Gallardo
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
Although transgender people are increasingly visible in mainstream North America, trans teachers are without adequate resources or protections to support their employment in schools. Legislation in both Canada and the United States that invokes concern about parental rights and “LGBT indoctrination” in schools illustrate the dangerous political landscape facing teachers. In 2023, over 500 anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) bills were introduced in state legislatures across the United States (Choi, 2024). Given this context, this paper explores trans education workers’ descriptions of trans visibility in the workplace. Drawing from interviews from the Trans Workers in Schools Project (TWISP), we …

Using explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we investigated counseling student outcomes and attitudes in asynchronous versus synchronous learning modalities. We studied whether asynchronous or synchronous learning contributed to differences in student outcomes on a final project in an Advanced Human Growth and Development course. Using a Kruskal-Wallis H test, we found no significant differences on final project scores among groups categorized according to the number of asynchronous and synchronous activities completed. We also explored the attitudes of online counseling students towards synchronous and asynchronous learning. Thematic analysis of open-ended surveys of 53 counseling students revealed four themes: enhanced learning experiences, advantages …

Parallel Journeys: Supporting Wounded Healers In Counselor Education, Susannah C. Coaston
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Much has been written about the motivations for wounded healers to pursue work in the helping professions. Those with painful life experiences can have a unique ability to understand the pain of others, and through their recovery, they may gain insight and understanding to benefit others. The counselor development process can be fraught with challenges that may have a detrimental impact on wounded healers. As such, counselor educators can benefit from amending their approaches to ensure that wounded healers gain the skills necessary to support their mental health and well-being, effectiveness, and personal and professional development. This article introduces a …

Trauma-Informed Bilingual Counselor Education: Factors To Guide Professional Mental Health Training With Spanish-Speaking Students, Fernando Estrada, Miguel A. Arana
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Latine immigrants confront various forms of violence that increases their risk for traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a need to advance the training of counselors who can work with Spanish-speaking clients exposed to trauma. The goal of this study was to articulate a literature-based conceptualization of trauma-informed bilingual counselor education. The results of a content analysis facilitated a synthesis of the relevant scholarship that highlighted four main facets: (i) integrative translanguage pedagogy, (ii) immigrant trauma exposure and reaction, (iii) culturally responsive socio-emotional interventions, and (iv) bilingual supervisory alliance. These factors can help guide professional graduate training. Implications …

The Development Of Teacher Identity In Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Wes Allen, Joel F. Diambra, Rebecca Gaylor
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Abstract
Counselor educators (CE) prepare counselor education doctoral students (CEDS) to work as counselors, scholars, leaders, supervisors, and teachers. While we have a firm understanding of how CEDS develop in general (Limberg et al., 2013; Moss et al., 2014), there is little known about how they develop specifically as teachers. The goal of this research study was to gain insight into how teacher identity develops for CEDS. We interviewed 10 participants using transcendental phenomenology methodology to gain insight into their teaching preparation experiences and identities as teachers. We identified three primary themes from the data: (1) Connection, (2) Confidence, or …

Lived Experiences Of Master’S Counseling Student-Caregivers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Lindsay M. Woodbridge, Kayla M. Kemp, David K. Duys, Tiffany J. L. Simon
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
The COVID-19 pandemic created challenging circumstances for many counselors-in-training. In this study, researchers used a qualitative phenomenological design to explore eight master’s counseling students’ experiences navigating multiple roles, including graduate student and caregiver, during the pandemic. Themes included the many ways participants’ lives changed, participants’ sense of being pulled in many directions simultaneously, and factors that added to or mitigated the strain of navigating multiple life roles during a public health crisis. Because this role strain is not unique to the pandemic, the authors provide recommendations for counselor educators who work with master’s students who are caregivers. These recommendations include …

Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model In Counselor Preparation, Everette Coffman, Jacqueline Swank, Sondra Smith
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
As rates of substance abuse rise in the U.S., a treatment gap persists in the provision of prevention and intervention counseling services. Improving training in substance use treatment for counselors-in-preparation who provide early prevention and intervention across school and clinical settings may help fill the void in access to services. To meet this need, we developed an online multidisciplinary SBIRT curriculum for our university’s counselor education program, including mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and school counselors. The five-module training prepares graduate students at a basic competency level through an integrative approach involving online instructional pedagogy. This manuscript outlines …

Overcoming Barriers And Infusing Inclusive Teaching Practices In Counseling Programs, Ash Pitts, Kassie R. Terrell, Lena Salpietro, Hanadi Y. Hamadi
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselor educators are responsible for promoting inclusive practices within educational institutions and the counseling field. Inclusive teaching promotes equity in education through a commitment to social justice in the classroom. However, many professional organizations fail to define inclusive andragogy and provide little guidance for counselor educators on how to implement these practices within their training programs. Thus, many educators struggle with personal and institutional barriers, as well as limited guidance on effectively implementing inclusive teaching practices. This quantitative study (N=129) explores barriers counselor educators face in infusing inclusive teaching practices, highlights ways to overcome those barriers, and provides …

Relationship Between Self-Silencing And Self-Neglect Behaviors And Disordered Eating And Stigma Toward Seeking Behavioral Health Support Among Black Women Who Adopt The Superwoman Schema, Veanda Hemphill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors, key dimensions of the superwoman schema (SWS), function as protective coping mechanisms in response to psychosocial stressors. However, these behaviors often perpetuate self-sacrifice, leading to an increased risk of physical and mental health decline. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors (independent variables) and disordered eating and stigma toward seeking support from behavioral health services (dependent variables) among Black women who adopt the SWS. The theoretical and conceptual frameworks of silencing the self and intersectionality guided this study. The 78 participants who self-identified as Black and …
Digital Ecosystems And Data Regulation, Andrew Rhodes, Jidong Zhou, Junjie Zhou
Digital Ecosystems And Data Regulation, Andrew Rhodes, Jidong Zhou, Junjie Zhou
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper provides a framework in which a multiproduct ecosystem competes with many single-product firms in both price and innovation. The ecosystem is able to use data collected on one product to improve the quality of its other products. We study the impact of data regulation which either restricts the ecosystem's cross-product data usage, or which requires it to share data with small firms. Each policy induces small firms to innovate more and set higher prices; it also dampens data spillovers within the ecosystem, reduces the ecosystem's incentive to collect data and innovate, and potentially increases its prices. As a …

A Document Analysis Of School Shooting On College Campuses, Kevin Lavelle Childs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite media outcry and societal outcry, gun violence on college campuses in the United States continues to be an unresolved problem. Prior to on-campus shootings, college campuses were safe locations that were conducive to learning. Sadly, this is no longer the case. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the key characteristics of mass shootings on college campuses so that officials would be provided with information that would enable them to create safer campuses. Using a rational choice theory as the conceptual framework, which focused on the perpetrator’s behavior, a document analysis was conducted to identify and understand …

The club industry has experienced growing demand for memberships, particularly from younger generations since the pandemic, resulting in resurgent and dynamic changes in members’ behaviors and needs. However, limited data accessibility has hindered clubs' ability to respond promptly to these membership changes. This study identified current issues and challenges in the club industry by utilizing secondary data from an industry survey and analyzing club members' responses and comments on facilities, communication, and social events. Through topic modeling, three main themes were revealed: generational challenges, gender-related concerns, and social function-related issues. The findings indicate that there are diverse opinions and needs …
Architecting A More Gender-Inclusive Curriculum For Graduate Leadership Education, Galen J. Talis
Architecting A More Gender-Inclusive Curriculum For Graduate Leadership Education, Galen J. Talis
Libraries
Graduate leadership education is an important context for increasing gender-inclusivity. Incoming students are increasingly likely to support an all-gender approach; transgender and nonbinary graduate students report safety concerns on campus; and leadership scholars have identified serious discrimination against trans and nonbinary employees in the workplace as well as the need for greater gender-inclusivity in leadership education. Cis women and men are more widely recognized as gender-diverse, whether due to intersections with other identities or due to within-gender complexity. Yet researchers often fail to identify a gender theory when researching gender and leadership, most commonly assume a gender-binary frame, and do …

The Relationships Between Social Stress, Anxiety, And School Attendance/Absenteeism Among Middle School Students With High-Incidence Disabilities, Rebecca Caroline Canady
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic absenteeism has been on the rise across the United States since schools fully reopened to in-person learning after COVID-19-related closures. Historically, students with disabilities are more likely to experience increased rates of absenteeism. However, there is a lack of research on specific psychosocial factors related to school attendance/absenteeism (SA/A) for students with disabilities. The purpose of this quantitative study of archival data was to examine through analyses of variance what extent the relationship between anxiety and SA/A is moderated by social stress among middle school students with high-incidence disabilities. Additionally, trends in the relationship between variables from before and …
