Ateneo School of Government Publications
In the Philippines, the regulation of e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTPs), and nicotine pouches under Republic Act 11900 or the Vape Law is crucial as their use continues to rise. As e-cigarettes are rapidly gaining popularity due to their social appeal, perceived novelty, ever-changing flavors, and sensations that are attractive to consumers, HTPs and nicotine pouches are continuously developing as well. This study aims to characterize e-cigarette, HTP, and nicotine pouch flavor descriptors in the Philippines and to assess the regulatory implications of existing policies regulating these products. We adapted the Tobacco Pack Surveillance System (TPackSS) data collection protocol developed …

Supply Chain Disruptions, Supplier Capital, And Financial Constraints, Ernest Liu, Yukun Liu, Vladimir Smirnyagin, Aleh Tsyvinski
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study the impact of supply chain disruptions on U.S. firms based on the universe of seaborne shipment-level import transactions from 2013 to 2023. The granularity of the data allows us to build an index of firm-level disruptions of international suppliers and introduce a comprehensive set of stylized facts for supply chain relationships in the cross-section of firms. We build a general equilibrium heterogeneous firms model with two types of capital stocks—physical and international supplier capitals. Accumulation of supplier capital is an important endogenous margin of adjustment, and limiting this ability substantially delays recovery, especially in financially constrained firms.

Accessing Local Health Programs For Afro-Caribbean Families In The Greater Tampa Bay Area, Michelle Jacqueline Swift
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Access to quality healthcare is essential for the well-being of immigrant families, especially Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the Greater Tampa Bay area. Disparities in use and satisfaction with health services are known. Guided by Andersen’s healthcare utilization model, a quantitative cross-sectional design employing multiple linear regression analyzed the relationships between self-reported income, education, years since immigration, and health-seeking behaviors (IVs) and satisfaction with care, measured by the PSQ-18 (DV). This study involved 92 English-speaking Afro-Caribbean migrant families with minors residing in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. The IVs did not emerge as significant variables in the model output F(14, 68) = …

Understanding The Unexplored Illness Of Scrupulosity, Nicholas York
Understanding The Unexplored Illness Of Scrupulosity, Nicholas York
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Scrupulosity, a subset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), is a mental health disorder that is fundamentally unique and impacts both religious and non-religious perfectionistic individuals. The aim of this literature review is to highlight the difficulty in diagnosis and lack of specialized treatment for those suffering with the difficulties of scrupulosity. When someone seeks help from mental health professionals, they may remain undiagnosed due to the complexity of scrupulosity. Further, when properly diagnosed, treatment can be complicated due to the difficulty in distinguishing religious standards from obsessive tendencies. Additionally, when a therapist treats scrupulosity, they may struggle to apply general OCD …
Harm Of Screen Time On The Physical And Mental Health Of Young Children, Joseph Shearer
Harm Of Screen Time On The Physical And Mental Health Of Young Children, Joseph Shearer
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
More than 10 years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a statement recommending that children under the age of two should not be allowed to view electronic screens. Although screen time is commonplace in a modern climate, the research reported within this review draws attention to the potential detriments of early exposure. These detriments include reduced levels of exercise, sleep, and creativity, as well as increased levels of unhealthy food consumption and an influx of mental health challenges later in life. Some benefits are discussed, such as opportunities for learning and/or stress reduction. Ultimately, the research over the …
Parental Strategies For Modifying Behavior: The Positives Of Positive Reinforcement, Benjamin D. Rasmussen
Parental Strategies For Modifying Behavior: The Positives Of Positive Reinforcement, Benjamin D. Rasmussen
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This research investigates the effectiveness of positive reinforcement as a central parenting strategy for modifying children’s behavior, grounded in B.F. Skinner’s operant conditioning theory. Using factor analysis, two key factors emerged: the impact of positive reinforcement on behavior change and its influence on parent-child dynamics. Positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desirable behaviors with positive stimuli, has been found to promote the repetition of those behaviors and yield beneficial long-term outcomes. The evidence indicates that this approach not only strengthens desirable behaviors but also enhances the quality of relationships between parents and children, and teachers and students. Although some argue that …
It Is Not Just A Phase: Psychosocial Factors As A Window Into Adolescent Alcohol Abuse In Rural Communities, Jamie Pineda
It Is Not Just A Phase: Psychosocial Factors As A Window Into Adolescent Alcohol Abuse In Rural Communities, Jamie Pineda
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Adolescent alcohol consumption in rural areas is a serious issue that has been continuously overlooked by researchers in the past. While a few scholars have explored adolescents’ genetics and mental health conditions to illuminate their motivation behind underage drinking, psychosocial factors that expose rural adolescents to alcohol have yet to be adequately explored. Similarly, the question of what can be done to prevent or limit rural adolescent alcohol consumption has also been relatively ignored. As such, this work seeks to identify social influences that may elevate underage drinking in rural communities and to determine effective alcohol abuse prevention programs that …
A Literary Review On The Effects Of Music Therapy On Depressed Adolescents: Brain Function, Individual Therapy, And Group Psychotherapy, Bella Mccain
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This paper presents a literature review examining the impact of music therapy on adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). Music therapy, officially recognized in 1950, is a clinical intervention that addresses various psychological and cognitive deficiencies. Adolescents show a strong affinity for music, making it a potential treatment for depression, which is prevalent among this age group. This review explores studies focused on music therapy’s effects on brain function, individual psychotherapy, and group therapy for adolescents. Research suggests that music therapy positively influences brain activity by reducing cortisol levels and shifting brainwave patterns towards healthier states. In individual therapy, music …

Finding Meaning In Psychotherapy: A Literature Review Of Logotherapeutic Methodology In Psychotherapeutic Treatment, Jason M. Hoskin
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Frankl’s logotherapy is a meaning-centered therapy, focusing on finding personal life purpose to improve one’s psychological well-being, particularly during personal struggle and suffering (Frankl, 1992). This literature review analyzes the empirical research measuring the efficacy of logotherapy in psychotherapy with a total of 27 articles from 2012–2022 reviewed and analyzed. Results illustrates that published contemporary empirical research on this topic focuses mainly on studying (1) theoretical principles of logotherapy through survey data, (2) the efficacy of logotherapy-based groups psychotherapy for individuals, or (3) psychometrics of frequently used instruments for measuring meaning in life. Overall, these categories corroborate the finding that …
Pediatric Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder: Why Family Intervention Can Help, Marinne Hammond
Pediatric Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder: Why Family Intervention Can Help, Marinne Hammond
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) struggle with obsessions, compulsions, and dysfunctional beliefs, and this can impair normal functioning. Due to the possibility of a lifelong diagnosis of OCD after onset in childhood, pediatric OCD is of special concern in clinical psychology. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious model for treating pediatric OCD. Nonetheless, what may be overlooked in treatment of a child or adolescent with OCD is the importance of family intervention. Family accommodation (FA), an unhealthy participation of family members in the behaviors of pediatric OCD clients, can be emotionally challenging for the family and detrimental to …
Overcoming Social, Cultural, Physical And Covid-19 Barriers To Treatment For Eating Disorders Through Teletherapy, Wyatt W. Capener
Overcoming Social, Cultural, Physical And Covid-19 Barriers To Treatment For Eating Disorders Through Teletherapy, Wyatt W. Capener
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Eating disorders (EDs) are among the deadliest of mental illnesses and may affect female, male, sexual and gender minorities, young, and old populations. The effects of EDs burden individuals with cultural, social, and physical inhibitors to seeking treatment and therefore may go untreated. Additionally, there is a nationwide lack of access to mental health professionals. EDs may link to a decrease in the quality of life and an increased mortality rate; therefore, it is imperative that individuals afflicted with EDs have access to treatment. The variety of symptoms associated with EDs calls for flexible solutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected …

Modeling The Relationship Between Calories And Activity Metrics: A Regression Analysis With Variable Selection, Felix Yeboah
Data Science and Data Mining
Physical activity monitors have become integral to daily routines, with wearable devices such as the Apple Watch and Fitbit offering continuous data on users’ physical activity. This study compares the measurement accuracy of these devices by examining how they record parameters relevant to fitness and health. Employing multiple linear regression, we modeled the relationship between calories expended and a set of explanatory variables, including heart rate, steps, distance, age, activity level, weight, and device type. Evaluation of all possible variable combinations identified heart rate, steps, distance, weight, and watch type as the most effective predictors of calorie expenditure. Although the …
Addressing The Humanitarian Crisis In Bangladesh’S Disaster Management, Rifat Anik
Addressing The Humanitarian Crisis In Bangladesh’S Disaster Management, Rifat Anik
CAFE Symposium 2025
Bangladesh faces frequent and severe natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and river erosion, making it highly susceptible to climate-induced displacement and economic instability. As disasters grow more intense, vulnerable communities struggle to recover, facing repeated losses with limited support. Despite disaster management efforts, gaps in response, inefficient resource distribution, and governance issues often leave those most in need without adequate assistance. Understanding these challenges is crucial to improving disaster response and building a more resilient system.
Assessing Psychologists’ Clinical Knowledge Of Geriatric Depression: A Validation Study Of The Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire, Abigail J. Laine
Assessing Psychologists’ Clinical Knowledge Of Geriatric Depression: A Validation Study Of The Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire, Abigail J. Laine
Dissertations
Because the US population is rapidly aging, generalist clinicians will increasingly be called upon to provide mental health services to older adults. Unfortunately, most generalist clinicians do not possess the specialized knowledge to provide clinical services to this population and will require training. Professional training efforts are currently hindered by the lack of psychometrically supported scales of clinical disorders specific to aging. Without such scales, it is difficult to evaluate the impact of continuing education programs. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties and scale dimensionality of the Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire (LLD-KQ), a …

The Non-Apology Of Tyler, The Creator, John Gibaud
CAFE Symposium 2025
This project analyzes the behavior and statements of the musician Tyler, The Creator as compared to contemporary understandings of the steps, requirements, and functions of a public apology. In 2009, Tyler, The Creator began his career as a solo singer songwriter, using shock value tactics to gain the attention of the public with lyrics and online comments which glorified murder, sexual assault, and kidnapping. Outcries against the themes of the comments and lyrics called for an official public apology and acknowledgement from Tyler, The Creator, however, such a statement never came to fruition. Since his problematic debut, Tyler, The Creator …
Familiarity Of Psychiatric Terms Among College Students, Julia Pekala
Familiarity Of Psychiatric Terms Among College Students, Julia Pekala
CAFE Symposium 2025
Recently, there has been an increase in the usage of psychiatric terminology used among internet users. Terms such as autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are thrown around without an understanding of these words and their true meaning. These words are picked up and used in a similar context as any other internet lingo, in an ironic, joking manner, without proper consideration of their origins and meaning. Due to most content on the internet being unmoderated and seemingly endless, users are often faced with misleading information about real clinical disorders. The use of these words follows the …

The Significance Of Social Media Neologisms Across The Globe, Molly Bushong
CAFE Symposium 2025
Social media neologisms, new terms coined through digital platforms, have drastically altered human communication, and will only continue to do so as technology rapidly advances. These words and phrases develop alongside society as innovative technology, experiences, and phenomena are continuously introduced into everyday life. Although neologisms have been present throughout all time and social media's existence, research has identified that their popularity has exponentially increased in recent years. My research builds upon previous research while exploring how social media neologisms have evolved over the past five years, their impact on language formality, and the familiarity of these terms across various …

Ethical Problems Of Enforcing Justice In Death Note And Psycho-Pass Anime, Aldiyar Alen
CAFE Symposium 2025
What happens when justice is controlled by a single person or a powerful system? This research explores how Death Note and Psycho-Pass show the dangers of extreme justice. In Death Note, Light Yagami takes the law into his own hands, believing he can create a perfect world by eliminating criminals. In Psycho-Pass, an advanced AI system judges people before they even commit crimes, deciding their fate based on predictions. Both systems aim to reduce crime but end up threatening personal freedom and fairness. By comparing these stories, this study highlights the risks of justice without balance, questioning how …
