An Inventory Of Private Well Programs Across The United States, Bethany G. Foust, Ann S. Ojeda, Jessica Curl, Eve Brantley, Stephanie R. Rogers

Journal of Extension

Private well owners comprise approximately 15% of the United States (US) population and are responsible for managing their well water. Management of domestic wells can be burdensome, requires knowledge, and is critical for maintaining clean drinking water. Management resources vary by state and the resource landscape across the US is unclear. Thus, our objective was to inventory where resources exist, while also highlighting geographic areas that may need improved resources to ensure that people have the ability to safely manage their drinking water. Results of this inventory showed that 64% of states have programs; 72% of which were Cooperative Extension.

How Electricity Utility Practitioners In The United States Approach Power System Resilience, Shardul Tiwari, Aritra Chakrabarty, Chelsea Schelly, Mostafa Sahraei-Ardakani, Gaby Ou, Jianli Chen

Michigan Tech Publications

This study explores the understanding and practice of resilience among electrical utilities in the United States, focusing on how practitioners in the utility sector conceptualize and apply resilience in their work. As electricity becomes increasingly central to modern life, powering critical infrastructure and essential services, the resilience of power systems has gained prominence in energy policy and planning. However, there is a lack of standardized definitions and approaches to resilience in both academia and practice, particularly from an energy service perspective. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with experts (practitioners) from transmission and distribution utilities in the …

Beer And Biology, A Perfect Pairing: Using Beer To Spread Awareness About Invasive Species, Samuel Nutile, Adam Simpson, Sara Stahlman, Lynne E. Beaty

Journal of Extension

Managing the spread of introduced invasive species relies on educating recreationists that currently or potentially harbor such species. By partnering with a local brewery, we developed the Lagers for Lakes Draft Series to facilitate outreach about aquatic invasive species in Erie, Pennsylvania. To date, Lagers for Lakes drafts and associated launch events have reached over 230 individuals and increased awareness of invasive species by 86%. With the materials provided here and the lessons learned from these events, we hope similar outreach efforts can be developed elsewhere to educate and minimize the spread of invasive species.

The United States dollar’s dominance as the global reserve currency, established under the 1944 Bretton Woods system, persists despite the 1971 decoupling of the gold backing to the dollar. Its liquidity, stability, and full support by the US government confer a solid financial security and advantage to the currency, including a universal acceptance of the dollar and a relatively low borrowing cost. Because of these reasons, the US dollar has been able to dominate the global financial markets for the past eight decades. However, the rapidly emerging global political and economic power shifts are challenging the status of the US …

Building Resilience To Public Safety Power Shutoffs Through Public Education, Vikram Koundinya, Cristina Chiarella, Susan Kocher, Faith Kearns, Sabrina Drill

Journal of Extension

Public Safety Power Shutoff events are being implemented in California to reduce wildfire impacts. We surveyed California residents to identify their information needs and understand the potential role of University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in power shutoff management. A majority of respondents need information on alternative power sources and community power systems. Most respondents indicated family, friends, and neighbors as the important group to manage power shutoff. UCCE was least used and preferred source for power shutoff information. Our findings reveal a need for Cooperative Extension to play an important role in power shutoff management and educating the public.

Speech recognition has the potential to make technology more accessible to users. However, the accuracy of speech recognition remains limited for users with disabilities, including those with Down Syndrome, and the types and frequencies of recognition errors are poorly understood. This paper characterizes these problems, focusing on errors occurring when recognizing Down Syndrome speech. We analyze the transcripts from six speech recognition algorithms (Google, IBM, Otter.ai, Microsoft, AssemblyAI, OpenAI) using the audio content of 15 individuals with Down Syndrome (331 dialogues; 3428 words). Our analysis shows: (1) significant difference in speech recognition accuracy for people with Down Syndrome compared to …

Clark Moustakas’ Husserl, Thomas Byrne Feb 2025

Clark Moustakas’ Husserl, Thomas Byrne

The Qualitative Report

This paper critically examines Clark Moustakas’s presentation of Husserl in Phenomenological Research Methods. I argue that Moustakas’s account misrepresents two core elements of Husserl’s phenomenology – intentionality and the transcendental reduction – in ways that directly compromise the foundations of qualitative phenomenological research. First, Moustakas treats intentional meaning as something private, located within the individual, rather than as given in the world. This misreading severs the connection between experience and a shared world of meaning, leaving qualitative researchers unable to clarify participants’ accounts beyond private expression. Second, Moustakas reduces the transcendental reduction to introspective reflection, overlooking its function as a …

The Effect Of Age Of Acquisition On The Development Of Lexical Attainment And Oral Proficiency In English As L2 In Adult Native Arabic Speakers, Mona Ahmed Kamar El-Zaman Feb 2025

The Effect Of Age Of Acquisition On The Development Of Lexical Attainment And Oral Proficiency In English As L2 In Adult Native Arabic Speakers, Mona Ahmed Kamar El-Zaman

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the influence of the age of acquisition (AoA) on the development of lexical attainment and oral proficiency in English as a second language (L2) among adult native Arabic speakers, focusing on classroom foreign language learners within the Egyptian context. AoA, a critical variable in second language acquisition (SLA) research, is explored in relation to two key domains: lexical knowledge and oral proficiency. The study examines the role of AoA and AoA related effects, such as the order of bilingualism and the length of exposure to rich language input (LoE) as a confounding factor. Through a mixed-methods approach, …

This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Geography Awareness Week we sold Tshirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in Indiana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee.

The Timing Of The Baroclinicity Maximum Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Brent Walker Feb 2025

The Timing Of The Baroclinicity Maximum Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Brent Walker

The Geographical Bulletin

Certain mid-latitude coastal areas are zones of extreme baroclinicity during the coldest months of the year. Because midlatitude cyclones often tend to travel along these zones of coastal baroclinicity, the exact timing of the variations in the degree of baroclinicity along these coasts is important with regard to the forecasting of cyclonic storm tracks and their associated weather. This study examines the variations in the timing and magnitude of the baroclinicity along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico of the United States. Near coastal land surface temperatures and sea surface temperatures along both coasts are compared for the …

Environmental And Topographical Factors Affecting Male "Middle-Of-The-Pack" Duathlon Performance, Glen A. Wiggins, Peter T. Soule Feb 2025

Environmental And Topographical Factors Affecting Male "Middle-Of-The-Pack" Duathlon Performance, Glen A. Wiggins, Peter T. Soule

The Geographical Bulletin

Duathlon performance in male "middle-of-the-pack" (MMP) athletes was examined for 13 races held in Oregon and British Columbia during 1990. The primary objectives was to investigate the relationship between topographic and race-day weather variability on MMP duathlon performance. Regression models were created to help explain MMP performance for each duathlon segment (first 5 km run, 30 km bicycle, second 5 km run), overall, and 5 km run disparity. A suite of topographic and raceday weather variables were considered as possible explanatory variables. First 5 km ~un performance is primarily a function of the topographic difficulty of the course. Wind speed …

The Impact Of Mountain Goat Migration On Unconsolidated Slopes In Glacier National Park, Montana, David R. Butler Feb 2025

The Impact Of Mountain Goat Migration On Unconsolidated Slopes In Glacier National Park, Montana, David R. Butler

The Geographical Bulletin

Native mountain goats must cross U.S. Highway 2 in order to gain access to a natural salt lick along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, Montana. Prior to 1981, goats approached through forest cover and then crossed over the highway. Reconstruction of the highway incorporated two goat underpasses which substantially altered the migration pattern. Large numbers of goats now utilize an open, south-facing slope, and cause extensive erosion. Repeat photography illustrates the extent of erosion over the period since 1981 , and provides estimates of the amount of sediment removed. Erosion rates are startlingly high, and are a direct …

Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comments. Geography: A Matter Of Place, George J. Demko

The Geographical Bulletin

One of the greatest curses and pleasures of my life is being a geographer. The curse? Do you have any idea how many times I am asked to name the capitol of Kentucky (I don't even care) or how many people pick me as their partner in Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy? The pleasure? Practicing real geography, that is, using and teaching geographical skills to solve real problems and understanding the world around me. More of this later. It always amazes me how a discipline as old and distinguished as geography came to be so misunderstood through the centuries. Granted, there …

Reinterpretation Of Relations Between Vegetation Removal And Water Yield, David P. Post, George P. Malanson Feb 2025

Reinterpretation Of Relations Between Vegetation Removal And Water Yield, David P. Post, George P. Malanson

The Geographical Bulletin

While the relation between vegetation clearance and increasing streamflow appears to be strong for data aggregated among geographic regions, results are equivocal in local areas. Earlier data are re-analyzed to consider the role of hydroclimatology. While vegetation clearance increases absolute streamflow, the proportional change is not significant. Residuals of regressions of absolute and proportional change in streamflow on vegetation clearance are related to precipitation, with positive and negative slopes, respectively. A few outliers with high responses are important in creating a pattern, and hydroclimatology is a better predictor of change in streamflow than is vegetation clearance for aggregate data. With …

The Geography Of The 1992 U.S. Presidential Debates, Cynthia L. Sutherland, Gerald R. Webster Feb 2025

The Geography Of The 1992 U.S. Presidential Debates, Cynthia L. Sutherland, Gerald R. Webster

The Geographical Bulletin

Due to the United States' reliance upon the electoral college, its presidential elections are intrinsically geographic events. In their campaigns successful candidates must address issues of varying pertinence in different places and at different geographic scales. The three 1992 presidential debates provide an opportunity to consider the relative geographic emphases of the three presidential candidates based on their references to geographic places. This paper uses the verbatim dialogue of the 1992 presidential debates to extract place name references by each of the three candidates. Chi-square tests are applied to the relative use of foreign and domestic place names by the …

Cemetery Landscape Of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, Tadashi Nakagawa Feb 2025

Cemetery Landscape Of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, Tadashi Nakagawa

The Geographical Bulletin

A geographical analysis of 39 cemeteries in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, reveals a cultural mosaic of the parish. While French Louisiana culture is dominant throughout the area, some elements of the Upland South culture, such as feet-to-east burial orientation, appear in eastern Ascension Parish. The distribution pattern of above ground burials indicates a cultural hierarchy in western Ascension Parish with Donaldsonville in its peak.
