With the growing accessibility of virtual reality (VR) and digital tourism, understanding its impact on emotional well-being is essential. This study explores the psychological effects of virtual tourism by examining whether participants feel more relaxed or energized after experiencing a virtual tour. The research involves participants engaging in a guided virtual tour of a destination, either with a VR headset or a tablet PC, followed by self-reported assessments measuring their emotions. There will also be a follow-up survey with open-ended questions asking participants to explain their responses to the previous survey. Data collection has been ongoing since March 2025. Any …

Introduction: Proper nutrition is critical for a healthy lifestyle. Inadequate nutrition and sedentary lifestyles contribute to high obesity and health concerns, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis. Two-thirds of U.S. adults and one-third of children are overweight or obese. Reducing disease rates and improving health can be achieved through a nutritious diet, including consuming more fruits and vegetables. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in behaviors, like healthy eating, when they have strong intentions, positive attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Research suggests perceived behavioral control and …
The Power Of Authority: Can White Individuals Detect Racial Microaggressions From High Authority Figures?, Vivian Cavallin
The Power Of Authority: Can White Individuals Detect Racial Microaggressions From High Authority Figures?, Vivian Cavallin
Research & Creative Achievement Day
A microaggression is a subtle, brief remark that communicates a hostile or derogatory impression towards a specific group, often associated with race. Microaggressions are often overlooked by those who do not experience their effects firsthand, which may lead to desensitization to racism. However, some external aspects may cause microaggressions to be noticed more or less by White individuals, such as the authority level of the person saying the microaggression. Because individuals often feel prone to obeying authority, the power or status that an authority figure holds may cause an individual to ignore or disregard racial microaggressions said by authority figures. …

Internship With The Winona School District And Project Compass And What I Have Taken From It, Jasmine L. Odegard
Research & Creative Achievement Day
There are two parts to my current internship; I work with the enrichment events coordinator at the Winona School District, and I also help with project compass events. Both are very fulfilling in different ways. With the school district side of my internship I am constantly working with children or planning events for the children, and project compass works directly with adults that have various disabilities. The bulk of my internship is with the school district, and particularly the elementary school, so we will start from there. As I stated above, I am interning for the school district and for …

Misinformation—How It Plays A Role In Our Perceptions Of The Political Realm, Olivia Murray
Research & Creative Achievement Day
If survey recipients are presented with negative misinformation, then they will be unsatisfied with the president elects time in office. If survey recipients are presented with positive misinformation, then they will be unsatisfied with the president elects time in office. This research takes the form of a survey which will be sent Winona State students to record their responses. I will test my hypothesis with one survey, which will include several demographic questions. These questions will be paired with questions that present “fake news” or misinformation about president elect Donald Trump. The misinformation will present him in a negative light. …

Sign Tracking Behavior In Long Evans And Sprague-Dawley Rats, Ryan J. Sleypen, Liam K. Kubitschek
Research & Creative Achievement Day
The purpose of the study was to evaluate differences in sign tracking behavior between Sprague Dawley and Long Evans lab rats. Sign tracking ultimately reflects the degree of impulsivity often modeled in addiction related research. Data collection for sign tracking included three types of data, total number of signtracking behaviors observed, latency scores for sign tracking behaviors, and sign tracking probability scores. Sign tracking latency times and probability scores displayed statistically significant results when comparing the two strains. However, the data regarding the total number of sign tracking interactions with the conditioned stimulus did not come back as statistically significant. …

Previous studies demonstrate that mental health issues are often under-recognized in males, and there are barriers to seeking help that may prevent men from getting necessary mental health treatment. Therefore, this study aims to examine how people perceive psychological distress in those with different genders and mental health disorders. Our sample consisted of around 250 participants who are attending Winona State University at the undergraduate level. In our survey, participants were presented with multiple vignettes of individuals showing symptoms of different mental health disorders, e.g. substance use disorder or social anxiety, for which the character gender was randomized. Following this, …

Politics And Collection Development: Behaviors In Library Collecting Based On Political Climates, Zachary G. Stein, Lindsey M. Reno
Faculty Scholarship
Over the last several years libraries in the United States have dealt with an increasing number of book challenges and calls for censorship of materials. The challenges and calls for censorship are no longer only from library patrons, but now include national organizations and even local and state legislators. Some of these actions have moved to criminalize librarians and curtail first amendment rights. Due to this new climate, it is important to examine the effect these culture wars have on library collection development decisions. This quantitative study seeks to answer that question with a nationwide survey of library professionals.
Romance Scam Victimization: A Survey-Based Examination Of Financial, Psychological, And Reporting Factors, Ld Herrera
Romance Scam Victimization: A Survey-Based Examination Of Financial, Psychological, And Reporting Factors, Ld Herrera
Research & Publications
Romance scams are a growing type of cybercrime in which perpetrators develop and exploit fraudulent romantic relationships with victims to obtain financial resources. These schemes cause substantial economic and psychological damage, yet they are significantly underreported. Official 2022 reports indicate only \$1.3 billion lost to romance scams in the US, but the true financial toll is likely much higher.
Using survey data from 366 victims, this study examines the financial and psychological toll of romance scams, reporting patterns, obstacles to seeking help, and victims' perceptions of received help. Most of the victims (60.9\%) did not seek help from any source, …
Value Creation And Value Capture In Indian Garment Sector Bargaining, Russell Morton
Value Creation And Value Capture In Indian Garment Sector Bargaining, Russell Morton
Discussion Papers
This paper examines creation and distribution of surplus from global value chains (GVCs) in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) domestic supply chains. While GVC participation can enhance growth and productivity, low prices paid to small input suppliers raise concerns that gains from GVC participation accrue to the large exporters (the buyers). Supply-chain transactions often occur in bargained agreements with non-price terms that increase small supplier surplus, such as quantity stability and other insurance-like terms. Therefore, low input prices reflect both buyers’ share of surplus generated by non-price terms and buyer capture. I enrich a Nash bargaining model to study how …

Paper Or Digital? Comparing Vocabulary Learning From Internet Search To A Physical Dictionary, Olivia L. Hamilton
Honors Theses
There is an increasing presence of technology found in the educational environment. With that there are many questions about the effectiveness of learning when information can be re-accessed with the click of a mouse. Information is more accessible than ever online but expecting to be able to rely on the internet may make learning less effective than other learning methods, such as paper. Continuing research has shown deficits, which could imply a digital presence is harming the learning environment. 125 students completed this study which compared differences between paper versus online learning platforms. The study tested peoples word translation accuracy …

The Effects Of Goal Setting On Sports Performance Of Competitive Athletes: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kelsi L. Crotts
The Effects Of Goal Setting On Sports Performance Of Competitive Athletes: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kelsi L. Crotts
Theses and Dissertations
Goal setting is widely used by athletes as a strategy to enhance sports performance. Despite its theoretical foundation in Goal Setting Theory (GST), empirical research has yielded mixed findings regarding its effectiveness in competitive athletic settings. Prior meta-analyses have included studies across various skill levels and motor tasks unrelated to sport, limiting their applicability to experienced athletes. The current meta-analytical review aimed to (1) evaluate the impact of goal setting on sports performance among competitive athletes, (2) examine the influence of goal characteristics such as difficulty, specificity, proximity, type, source, and feedback, and (3) identify methodological limitations in existing research …

Liberatory Librarianship - Authors@Eiu Book Talk, Brian W. Keith, Laurie N. Taylor
All Faculty Scholarship
In Liberatory Librarianship: Stories of Community, Connection, and Justice, Brian Keith, Laurie Taylor, and Shamin Renwick explore how librarianship can be a vehicle for empowerment, equity, and social justice. In this Authors@EIU talk, Brian Keith and Laurie Taylor share the inspiration, process, and key ideas behind the book, including how their work with the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) shaped their thinking about uncolonized, community-driven models for digital libraries. Drawing from examples across cultural heritage institutions, the speakers trace how traditional archives have often perpetuated colonial power structures, and how liberatory librarianship proposes a forward-looking alternative that centers …

Thriving Beyond Barriers: A Wellness Guide For Athletes And Coaches, Sydnie Allen, Ots, Lesley Khan-Farooqi, Phd, Otd, Otr, Emily Andersen, Otd, Otr
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This project addressed gaps in knowledge and skills among athletes and coaches regarding the social, physical, and environmental dimensions of wellness, which impact participation, health, quality of life, and overall wellness. The purpose was to create a wellness guide focused on the social, physical, and environmental dimensions of wellness, which may inhibit participation, health, quality of life, and overall wellness while fostering social inclusion and accommodating individual abilities to reduce injury risk and promote motivation. Though research on occupational therapy (OT) in sports is limited, emerging studies highlight the importance of participation for long-term independence. Environmental barriers like accessibility issues …

Fractured Spectacle: Contrasting Reactions To Itaewon Stampede Across Korean And English-Language Networked Publics, Jin-A Choi, Saif Shahin
College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
Late modern society has been conceptualized as a spectacle, a metaphor that brings to light not only its commodification but also the benumbing impact of mass media on the audience’s political agency. This study turns attention to the spectacle in the age of social media. Building on a growing body of research on the spectacle of suffering, we compare reactions to the 2022 Itaewon Halloween stampede, which claimed more than 150 lives, across Korean-language and English-language posts on the social networking platform, X (previously Twitter). Our research draws on two computational techniques, topic modeling and network analysis, to examine …

Work-Life Balance Conflicts Parents Of Early Adolescents Faced During Covid-19 Lockdowns, Rodney Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Measures such as social distancing and lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic meant parents balanced their roles as educators, tech support, and employees in shared home offices. This qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate the work-life balance conflicts parents of early adolescents faced during the COVID-19 lockdowns, focusing on how parents managed the challenges of pandemic restrictions and their strategies for coping with cognitive, emotional, and physical fatigue for themselves and their families. This study was guided by the transactional theory of stress and coping. Twelve female parents were virtually interviewed, selected based on their having early adolescent children at home, …

Assessment Of Current Online Sexual Child Abuse Research, Charlotte Fry
2025 Student Academic Showcase
As the virtual world continues to expand, online sexual child abuse (OSCA) is becoming an increasingly urgent issue, with various forms of technological exploitation, such as nonconsensual image misuse and coerced image recruitment, emerging as methods of harm. A national survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire found that 16% of young adults in the United States reported experiencing at least one form of online sexual abuse before turning 18. However, victims of OSCA often delay disclosure, sometimes not coming forward until years later. This delay is often due to fear of the offender discovering the disclosure, feelings of …
