Evaluating Lunch Plan Data In The St. Charles School District (Scsd), Maddy Alexander, Guillermo Bilbao, Duncan Krige, Alyssa Schreiber
2025 Student Academic Showcase
The SCSD is a public school district in St. Charles, with, on average, 4500 students a year. The SCSD is subdivided into an early childhood center, six elementary schools, two intermediate (5-6,7-8) schools, and two high schools. Vocational schools are also within this district but were not included in this report. The SCSD is concerned with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their district’s population and on the number of students that needed assistance with lunch. They have asked Lindenwood’s 2024-2025 PIC Math group to analyze their data from the years 2020-2025 and identify any trends. Identifying these trends …

Campus Exploration, Kacie Lingle
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Having available and sufficient study and community spaces on a college campus can impact the productivity and happiness of the students who attend. A survey was used to identify the locations where Lindenwood students perform certain activities such as studying alone and spending time with a group as well as to collect students’ thoughts on the current spaces on campus including optional suggestions. Students were asked if the spaces fit their purpose, if they feel satisfied with these spaces, and if they believe these spaces could impact their college experience. Preliminary common themes include satisfaction with the types of spaces, …
Imagining Differences: An Exploration Of The Visual Imagery Spectrum, Kay Dekock
Imagining Differences: An Exploration Of The Visual Imagery Spectrum, Kay Dekock
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Mental imagery, or more specifically, visual imagery, plays a significant role in human life. For this reason, this paper aims to examine the many aspects of visual imagery with a special focus on inherent differences between individuals. This paper explores the idea of what visual imagery is and how it is represented, from the in-between of the spectrum of visual imagery, to the extreme ends, where lies the conditions of aphantasia and hyperphantasia. This paper covers the core cognitive processes involved in visual imagery and the parts of the brain responsible for them. The idea of measurement and assessment is …
Juvenile Treatment: A Systematic Review Of Methadone On Juveniles After Incarceration, Joshua Bortieh
Juvenile Treatment: A Systematic Review Of Methadone On Juveniles After Incarceration, Joshua Bortieh
Criminal Justice Scholarly Projects
Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) has emerged as a harm-reduction strategy for addressing opioid use disorder (OUD) among justice-involved juveniles. Despite its growing implementation, there remains limited consensus regarding its effectiveness in reducing recidivism, its ethical and legal implications, and the systemic barriers surrounding its administration. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine the therapeutic, ethical, and criminological dimensions of MMT in juvenile justice populations. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and synthesized 15 peer-reviewed empirical studies published between 2010 and 2023. Data were sourced from four major electronic databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science using …
Stuffed Animals And Adults, Anna R. Reed
Stuffed Animals And Adults, Anna R. Reed
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Recently, stuffed animals have resurged in interest among children and adults. For example, in 2023, Squishmallows won Plush Toy of the Year at the annual Toy Association Awards. We surveyed 184 adult participants (18 or older) to identify who owns stuffed animals. We were interested in whether certain personality variables predict who has these toys and why adults retain interest in these toys. Among our participants, 71.7% owned stuffed animals. We hypothesized that adults with higher stress/anxiety would report increased likelihood of owning stuffed animals. This hypothesis was supported. An independent samples t-test showed that participants with stuffed animals reported …

Why People Play Foddian/Rage Games, David Kruse
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Many different video game genres capture and engage consumers by offering fun and engaging experiences. The fairly new genre of Foddian or rage games that are designed to make the player angry with clunky controls or unfair challenges. This genre has found a large audience despite seemingly subverting the usual game experience. This study will examine why Foddian players actively seek out experiences that are designed to be clunky and aggravating. This study would be to understand what needs Foddian games fulfill as outlined in the uses in gratification theory such as gaining knowledge, social interaction, or stress release. This …
Early Birds Or Night Owls: Who Is Getting The Best Sleep?, Josie Davis
Early Birds Or Night Owls: Who Is Getting The Best Sleep?, Josie Davis
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Chronotyping is categorizing individuals based on their sleep schedules. The two chronotypes are morning-types (M-type) and eveningtypes (E-types; Montralu et al., 2021). Heinrich et al. (2021) found that M-type individuals experienced better sleep quality than E-type individuals. Approximately 200 full time working individuals aged 20+ will be surveyed on their chronotype, sleep quality, and preferred exercise time. We hypothesize that M-type individuals will report better sleep quality than E-type individuals and will use an independent samples t-test to assess this. Additionally, we will categorize participants on matching or non-matching of chronotype and preferred exercise timing. The expectation is that the …
Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson
Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson
2025 Student Academic Showcase
My project is an exploration of the barriers to sports participation that disabled individuals face aside from their disability itself. The first barrier to sports participation that you might experience as a disabled individual would likely be psychological. Negative societal perceptions and portrayals of disabled people can diminish the confidence and self-belief necessary to pursue new athletic activities. Activities surrounding sports participation aside from the sport itself can be more time consuming for disabled athletes- getting ready before leaving the house, changing into the right clothes, and getting equipment on and together can take much longer for someone who is …

Honors Theses
This thesis explored hands-on experiences supporting ongoing research in behavioral gerontology, addressing the growing need for individualized interventions, and improving professional training to meet the complex needs of aging populations. Through involvement in two primary studies—one examining exercise nonadherence in people with osteoarthritis (OA) and another developing competency standards for professionals entering geropsychology. I contributed to data analysis, research design, and the analysis of qualitative and quantitative literature. My work with Haley Hughes’ study included developing a comprehensive data table that mapped participant responses from focus groups and identifying nuanced themes related to barriers and facilitators for physical activity. For …
Examining The Impact Of Widespread Disease On The Economy, Ryan Howell
Examining The Impact Of Widespread Disease On The Economy, Ryan Howell
Honors College Theses
Over centuries, disease has been an instigator of economic change. From the Black Death and the overturning of feudalism to the Spanish flu and its relationship with World War 1, pandemics have a profound effect on the social, political, and economic climate of the affected areas. In 2020, COVID-19 began in Wuhan, China and spread across the world rapidly and unexpectedly. The world economy was forced into a recession with major effects on industries such as airlines, energy, and automobiles. While some industries made smooth recoveries, the pandemic undeniably altered the way business is conducted. The shift between in-person and …
Effect Of Unilateral And Bilateral Resistance Training On Performance Tests Of Collegiate Softball Athletes, Kamryn S. O'Dell
Effect Of Unilateral And Bilateral Resistance Training On Performance Tests Of Collegiate Softball Athletes, Kamryn S. O'Dell
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Strength and conditioning coaches typically have athletes perform either unilateral (UL) or bilateral (BL) lower body training, based on the perception that UL may be more sport-specific, and may enable lighter loads due to different stability requirements. A randomized controlled design was used to assess the effects of UL (n=6) and BL (n=5) on collegiate DII softball athletes. After three weeks of familiarization training, testing was done pre- and post- 8 weeks of the athletes’ Fall offseason training program. Performance testing consisted of strength (front squat, hex bar deadlift, front rack split squat, rear foot elevated split squat), change of …

Age–Period–Cohort Effects Of Adult Cigarette Smoking In The United States, 1971–2020, Dinko Kranjac, Ashley W. Kranjac
Age–Period–Cohort Effects Of Adult Cigarette Smoking In The United States, 1971–2020, Dinko Kranjac, Ashley W. Kranjac
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The rates of cigarette use among American adults have dropped substantially throughout the last six decades, yet smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. It is crucial to identify the putative time-varying population-level factors of age, period, and cohort that influenced the decrease in smoking prevalence so we can maintain the downward trend. We used 49 years of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and hierarchical age–period–cohort (HAPC) analysis to examine lifecycle, historical, and generational distribution of smoking among Americans aged 18–74 years old. The prevalence of smoking has …
African American Adolescent Depressive Symptoms And Caregiver Perceptions, Katerina Marroquin
African American Adolescent Depressive Symptoms And Caregiver Perceptions, Katerina Marroquin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American adolescents with untreated mental health problems can have symptoms of depression. Depressive symptoms can persist in adulthood if untreated. Caregiver recognition is the strongest predictor of adolescent behaviors and depressive symptom outcomes. Caregivers can identify depressive symptoms in African American adolescents by focusing on met and unmet needs. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to ask about caregiver perceptions of African American adolescent depressive symptoms with focus on physiological needs, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization. The theoretical framework for this study is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Data analysis was conducted using NVivo to enhance the interpretation …

Best Practices To Expand Funding For Assisted-Living Facilities In Mississippi., Melissa Darlene Mason
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Background: Insufficient Medicaid reimbursement threatens the financial stability and quality of care in assisted-living facilities (ALFs). Fragmented funding, rising costs, and the absence of federal standards exacerbate financial challenges, highlighting the need for sustainable funding solutions. Purpose: This integrative review was conducted to examine Medicaid reimbursement challenges and to explore best practices for enhancing financial sustainability in ALFs through innovative funding strategies, alternative payment models, and policy reforms. Method: Using the Johns Hopkins evidence-based practice model, peer-reviewed literature from 2020–2025 was analyzed through the Donabedian model of healthcare quality to assess how Medicaid funding impacts care delivery and resident outcomes. …
A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell
A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the shifting religious landscape of the Spanish-speaking Catholic world through the lens of Protestant growth, particularly Pentecostal and Evangelical movements. Beginning with a historical account of Spain’s Catholic hegemony and its colonial export of Catholicism to Latin America, the study traces how Latin America’s religious identity has gradually diverged from its Spanish roots. Over the past half-century, Protestantism has grown rapidly across Latin America, challenging Catholic dominance and reshaping the region’s spiritual and social fabric.
The thesis then turns back to Spain, where rising immigration from Latin America and changing cultural dynamics have facilitated the reintroduction of …

Towards A Pedagogy Of Unruly Bodyminds, Muhammad Ali Imran, Jane L. Saffitz
Feminist Pedagogy
This commentary underscores critical practices from Jane’s “Unruly Bodies” seminar that Ali, a student in the course and Jane’s advisee, has since mobilized towards anti-colonial organizing. Purposely experimental, the seminar attempted to rethink embodiment as intercorporeal and thus as capable of generating new ways to think about agency and solidarity in contexts marred by forms of militarization, medical violence, and histories of domination. Thinking through our bodyminds as both terrains of contestation and weapons in broader struggles for liberation required us to cultivate a classroom space of radical openness and vulnerability. We describe these efforts, as well as our broader …

Conversations Before The Conversation: Readying Dissidence Through Norm-Setting, Ashley N. Watson
Feminist Pedagogy
How can educators speak truth to power in ways that decenter whiteness while supporting student learning across different levels of awareness? What does the right balance of challenge and support look like in today’s unpredictable college environment? These questions are drawn from my experience as a Black predoctoral fellow teaching “Intercultural Dialogue” at a traditionally white public liberal arts university in rural Minnesota. This paper—both a reflection and recommendations for practice—outlines my approach to co-constructing and scaffolding a conducive learning environment rooted in emancipatory pedagogy.
