Border Soundscapes: Latinidad, Belonging, And Sense Of Place In The Paso Del Norte Region., Josã© Manuel Flores Fuentes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the acoustic ecologies of the Juárez-El Paso border, investigating how soundscapes shape and reflect the cultural identity, sense of belonging, and sense of place within this unique transnational region. Guided by the theoretical lenses of belonging (Kohut, Tajfel, Turner, Hooks), sense of place (Feld & Basso), and habitus (Bourdieu), the research takes a phenomenological approach, informed by Merleau-Ponty's concepts of perception and Ceraso's notion of embodied listening. The study analyzes soundscape samples through Krause's categories of biophonies, geophonies, and anthropophonies, uncovering how these sounds contribute to the development of Latino identity and cultural cohesion in the borderlands.Focusing …

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Genotype prediction from RNA-seq data has become widespread. RNA-seq data, unlike DNA-seq data, are available as raw reads for many projects, with related protocols and consent terms typically inaccessible. However, there is a lack of clarity in current policy and inconsistency in practice with regard to the handling of these data. Here, we call for a framework for management of RNA-seq data and the predicted genotypes that includes registered access for RNA-seq data, controlled access for predicted genotypes, and a code of conduct for data access and use, as well as enhanced downstream protections.

The potential and threat of digital tools to achieve health equity has been highlighted for over a decade, but the success of achieving equitable access to health technologies remains challenging. Our paper addresses renewed concerns regarding equity in digital health access that were deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our viewpoint is that (1) digital health tools have the potential to improve health equity if equitable access is achieved, and (2) improving access and equity in digital health can be strengthened by considering behavioral science-based strategies embedded in all phases of tool development. Using behavioral, equity, and access frameworks allowed for …

On Critical Geneaology, Bernard E. Harcourt Aug 2024

On Critical Geneaology, Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

Today most critical theorists who deploy history use a genealogical method forged by Nietzsche and Foucault. This genealogical approach now dominates historically inflected critique. But not all genealogical writings today, nor all philosophical debates surrounding genealogy, advance the goals of critical philosophy. It is crucial now that we assess the value of genealogical critiques. The proper metric against which to evaluate such work is whether it contributes to transforming ourselves, others, and society in a valuable way. In this article, I propose that we use the term “critical genealogy” to identify those genealogical practices that positively nourish our activity and, …

Ultimately, it argues that a critical task for labour law scholarship is to rethink the body …

College Students' Perceptions Of The Student-Teacher Relationship, Lauren E. Biggs Aug 2024

College Students' Perceptions Of The Student-Teacher Relationship, Lauren E. Biggs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans, as social creatures, pursue relationships with others to fulfill various needs. As such, when we enter school, we naturally seek to establish relationships with teachers, who act as significant individuals in our lives. In general, research has shown that students with close, warm relationships with their teachers tend to experience more favorable outcomes related to academic achievement, behavior, and social-emotional factors. Students with more negative relationships with their teachers conversely tend to experience poorer outcomes. Though decades of research have consistently shown this correlation, few studies have examined the relationships between college students and their professors. The current study …

Real-Time Delphi Study: Perspectives Of An Autistic Panel On Independent Living, Celeste Michaud

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The shift from institutional living to community integration for people with disabilities, including autistic people, has been significantly influenced by legislative measures and advocacy. Despite these efforts, autistic youth and adults still experience a unique transition to independent living compared to their peers with other disabilities. Studies have reported that autistic adults are more likely to remain in the family home and less likely to live independently post-high school (Anderson et al., 2014). Existing literature and legislation illustrate a fragmented approach to defining and measuring independent living for autistic adults, often driven by non-autistic perspectives (Cribb et al., 2019). This …

In this study, 314 emerging adults (157 dyads; Mage = 19.2) engaged in an in-person interaction with either a close other or a stranger and, within this interaction, were assigned to engage in self-disclosure or a control task. Even though the closer participants …

The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman Aug 2024

The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The following project analyzes religious life through the lens of religious language. Motivated by ideas of Wittgenstein and Wittgensteinians, religious language is shown to be nonsensical, and yet significant. Wittgenstein connects how we understand language with how we understand life, and this connection extends to religious life. This project offers an answer to how religious language is unique by comparing religious language to riddles and the process of answering riddles. In addition, religious language becomes understandable with imagination, a relationship with the transcendent, and an understanding of the kinds of language present in religious discourse. These ideas are solidified with …

Supply Chains Shocks, Network Linkages, And Economic Outcomes, Romeo Eric Neuyou Nana Aug 2024

Supply Chains Shocks, Network Linkages, And Economic Outcomes, Romeo Eric Neuyou Nana

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One prominent consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic was the disruption of critical parts of the global supply chain. In the U.S., delays at ports and shortages of critical inputs such as semiconductors have negative ripple effects across the economy. This situation prompts a surge of interests from academics, business leaders, and policy makers alike. However, the evidence of the quantification of supply chain disruptions’ impact and its drivers on economic variables are still scant. In this essay, I investigate the extent of the impact of supply chain shocks on the U.S. economy and the mechanisms through which they affect economic …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In my dissertation, I explore the effect of networks and gender dynamics on corporate finance. In my first essay, I examine the effects of personal network on insider trading decisions. Using COVID-19 as a shock to test personal network effect, I find individuals were influenced by information about COVID-19 provided by the members of their personal networks. S&P 1500 insiders whose personal networks contained higher fractions of socially connected individuals from countries affected by early stages of COVID-19 were more likely to sell shares of their firms in the period preceding the U.S. stock market decline, and they are less …

Will These Feelings Last Forever? Examining The Relationship Between The Longevity Belief About Emotion And Avoidance, Elise Warner Aug 2024

Will These Feelings Last Forever? Examining The Relationship Between The Longevity Belief About Emotion And Avoidance, Elise Warner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that the belief that emotions last for long periods of time is associated with greater self-reported distress intolerance and greater experiential avoidance (Warner, 2022), with limited research examining the causal link between the longevity belief and experiential avoidance. Individuals high in emotional reactivity may tend to hold greater longevity beliefs (Veilleux et al., 2019), with high emotional reactivity linked to both greater experiential avoidance and distress intolerance (Bruns et al., 2019). Thus, the aim of the current study was to examine the influence of the longevity belief about emotions on behavioral avoidance in individuals high in emotional reactivity. …

News Media Coverage And Framing Of Human Trafficking In The United States, Chloe Junkerman Aug 2024

News Media Coverage And Framing Of Human Trafficking In The United States, Chloe Junkerman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines what makes mainstream news media representations of human trafficking cases newsworthy, and how news media choose to frame sensationalized human trafficking stories. While there have been several notable studies examining news media framing of human trafficking as a social issue more generally, prior research has yet to empirically investigate how the news media cover specific human trafficking cases, thus overlooking what types of attributes make cases newsworthy. This is an important gap in research as the types of cases that get covered, or ignored, by news media, and how stories frame various aspects of these crimes, informs …

To Be Framed: Investigating The Influence Of American Media Frames On Gun Control, William C. Chamblee Aug 2024

To Be Framed: Investigating The Influence Of American Media Frames On Gun Control, William C. Chamblee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gun control may be one of the most polarizing political issues facing America today. While there are many factors that contribute to gun control controversy, one may be how it is framed by news organizations. Research suggests that the emergence of partisan news media, differing levels of issue salience, and the public’s increased willingness to selectively expose could widen the gap between both Republicans and Democrats through their opinions on the issue of gun control, causing polarization. Using a survey, this study found that both Republicans and Democrats are likely to selectively expose to partisan media outlets and that a …

Beyond Single Connections: An Exploration Of How Overlapping Networks Drive Policy Change Among State Legislators, Melanie B. Hoskins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current research on policy diffusion and innovation primarily focuses on the policy idea as the unit of analysis. While diffusion studies incorporating social network theory often examine networks at the collective entity-level, they tend to neglect the actions of individual members. This study investigates how state legislators' exposure to novel policy ideas through their multiplex network ties influences their sponsorship of related bills and how legislators’ collaboration and coordination within these networks may significantly impact public policy outcomes. This three-article dissertation addresses three key areas by: 1) examining Arkansas legislators' participation within the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) network; 2) …
