The Changing Geography Of Population Centroids In The United States Between 1970 And 1990, Neela Thapar, David Wong, Jay Lee

Population centroids are useful tools in describing the general trend of population movements. This paper uses population centroids to show the changing geography of the U.S. population between 1970 to 1990. Data of population counts of census tracts and census block groups were obtained from the Internet. With a geographical information system, weighted population centroids for each of the 48 states in the continental U.S., four census regions, and nine census divisions for 1970, 1980 and 1990 were calculated. The general decline in manufacturing employment is explored and contrasted with the overall growth in the number of service jobs over the period 1990-94. New York and Los Angeles suffered declines in both producer services and manufacturing employment, whereas in contrast, Cleveland and Detroit, for example, registered gains in both sectors. The majority of cities had both gains and losses. Employment in 7 categories was analyzed for the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan regions. New York and Washington DC exhibited some similarity in their roles as shapers of the services economy. Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit were similar in the role …

The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. This paper considers the importance of reciprocity in organisational settings, whilst identifying three reciprocal exchange behaviours of which leaders should be aware. While many attribute health disparities in Detroit residents to the phenomenon of food deserts, this essay takes a closer look at such a seemingly obvious explanation and critically examines the concept of food deserts. This essay argues that the commonly held definition of food desert is inadequate for describing the complexities of a setting such as Detroit, and the true cause of the health disparities between the city and surrounding suburbs can be attributed to the lower socioeconomic status of the average Detroit resident, itself a product of racist housing policies and segregationist laws.

Syntactic processing and verbal working memory are both essential components to sentence comprehension. Nonetheless, the separability of these systems in the brain remains unclear. To address this issue, we performed causal-inference analyses based on lesion and connectome network mapping using MRI and behavioural testing in two groups of individuals with chronic post-stroke aphasia. We employed a rhyme judgement task with heavy working memory load without articulatory confounds, controlling for the overall ability to match auditory words to pictures and to perform a metalinguistic rhyme judgement, isolating the effect of working memory load (103 individuals). A new measure based on Self-Perception Theory for the job attitude organizational identification was developed. The Self-Perception Organizational Identification Scale measured the attitude by having participants evaluate past organizational loyalty behaviors, contrasting with the approach taken by the most widely used measure in the literature, the Mael scale, which only measured the cognitive appraisals of the attitude. The resulting reliability and validity study tested the new scale with a convenience sample of 332 adults working full-time at a focal organization for at least two months. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous disorder consisting of several subtypes, and both subthreshold depression and acute phase depression are associated with functional, occupational, and social impairments, even after remission. Studies suggest that depression symptom severity negatively affects a person’s health, work performance, and social functioning due to a person’s limited cognitive resources. In Western cultures, employers expect employees who have depression to use emotional regulation in the workplace, but these employees find that this uses cognitive resources to the extent that they are unable to do their work optimally and also fulfill their social functions in the workplace. …
