The high, and rate of loneliness is a threat to public health (Office of the Surgeon General, 2023), with negative mental and physical health consequences (e.g., Holt-Lunstad, 2021). Given that loneliness is a risk factor for poor mental health, efforts to address loneliness are urgently needed. Workplaces can facilitate an employee's social connection through supervisor support training, which can help mitigate loneliness. Among occupational groups, the military is at higher risk for mental health disorders, suicide, and loneliness (Fikretoglu et al., 2022; Naifeh et al., 2019). This study evaluated the efficacy of an evidence-based supportive-leadership training intervention targeting active-duty U.S. …

Caregiver Perceptions Of Antipsychotic Drug Use In Dementia Populations: Investigating How Antipsychotic Medications Are Overused, Alexis Wellman Aug 2024

Caregiver Perceptions Of Antipsychotic Drug Use In Dementia Populations: Investigating How Antipsychotic Medications Are Overused, Alexis Wellman

University Honors Theses

Antipsychotic drugs have been strongly suggested by many authors to cause great harm to those with dementia. Yet, they are still used in an overabundance in memory care facilities. Caregivers, who spend the most time with residents, often decide when and why people with dementia receive antipsychotic drugs. By examining the background of the relationship between antipsychotic drugs and the dementia population, it is clear that caregivers need more education on antipsychotic medications, better staffing on the average shift, more administrative support to handle medication orders and changes, and better laws and regulations to better reduce the amount of antipsychotic …

Driving Green Investments To Address Climate Change, Baptiste Gibrat Aug 2024

Driving Green Investments To Address Climate Change, Baptiste Gibrat

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The climate crisis is no longer news, and society needs to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions. Otherwise, the consequences of climate change will become increasingly catastrophic.

This thesis develops a framework to drive green investments, which reduce society’s dependance on fossil fuels. Initially, the research provides a comprehensive examination of these investments, followed by an exploration of three strategies to enhance their adoption: leveraging financial instruments and capital markets, implementing regulatory frameworks, and harnessing the power of technologies. To integrate these elements within a comprehensive framework, the study employs market research, reviews relevant literature, and includes interviews with …

Investigating The Engagement Behaviour Of Omni-Digital Banking Customers, Guhan R Aug 2024

Investigating The Engagement Behaviour Of Omni-Digital Banking Customers, Guhan R

Theses and Dissertations

Digital banking is rapidly growing in India, positioning the country as the global leader in digital banking users as of 2022, with approximately 295.5 million users, surpassing the United States by over 70 million. This growth reflects a shift from Omni-channel to Omni-digital banking, where customers exclusively use digital platforms, enhancing digital engagement. However, research specifically focusing on Omni-digital banking behavior remains limited, with most studies concentrating on online and mobile banking.

To address this gap, a study was conducted using a new research model based on UTAUT2 variables, targeting Omni-digital banking customers in Tamil Nadu. A sample of 1,082 …

“(Mis)Information Creation As A Process”: A Method For Teaching Critical Media Literacy, Winn W. Wasson

Librarian Publications

In January 2019, I taught a condensed credit-bearing media literacy course for undergraduates based on the ACRL Frame, “Information Creation as Process”. My main learning objective was to teach students to recognize accurate information, misinformation, and disinformation in the news and on social media, not by naming them as such, but by: 1) exposing students to the process through which news goes from field observations to a published or broadcast story, and 2) exploring current social and cognitive psychology research on how humans evaluate whether to believe the information they consume. The course ended with a discussion of healthy information …

The Impact Of Health Shocks On Worker Performance: Evidence From Professional Sports, Yulia Chikish, Brad R. Humphreys Aug 2024

The Impact Of Health Shocks On Worker Performance: Evidence From Professional Sports, Yulia Chikish, Brad R. Humphreys

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Workplace injuries generate substantial costs to workers and employers. We analyze consequences of a workplace injury, ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) damage in elbows of baseball pitchers. Once career ending, a method to repair torn UCLs, Tommy John surgery, was developed in the 1970s. We analyze performance of pitchers before and after undergoing this surgery and also compare them to a matched sample of uninjured pitchers. Surgical repair of UCL injuries extends post-injury careers by roughly one season relative to matched uninjured pitchers, generating economic benefits for players and teams. Post-injury performance, in terms of batting success of hitters faced by …

Corporate Social Advocacy: A Study Of Brand And Consumer Activism In The Era Of Social Media, Christa L. Taylor

Student Theses and Dissertations

As corporations recognize the importance of balancing profitability with social responsibility, the adoption of corporate social advocacy has become a critical approach for addressing pressing social issues, fostering trust, and enhancing brand reputation. Growing public pressure has forced corporations to take a more vocal stance on social and political issues. Considering that corporate social advocacy is an emerging trend and is viewed as a practice outside of a corporation’s standard business practices, organizations have been presented with a new challenge of achieving legitimacy in their advocacy and taking on an expanded role as corporate citizens. This study explores the ways …

Beyond Mindset : Investigating Neural And Psychological Mechanisms Of Strategic Mindset, Growth Mindset And Feedback Learning, Yaqi Yang

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Extensive research has explored the benefits of the growth mindset over the past decades. Recently, researchers have turned their attention to the strategic mindset, a new concept with the potential to positively impact cognitive and behavioural change. While some literature suggests that both mindsets are associated with feedback learning, robust evidence is lacking, and the relationship between the three factors remains unknown. This thesis aims to investigate the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying the strategic mindset, growth mindset, and feedback learning through three distinct studies.

In Study 1, utilising a self- and other-rating paradigm, we examined neural and behavioural evidence …

Adaptation And Evaluation Of Guideline-Based Family-Based Behavioral Treatment For Overweight And Obesity In Childhood Survivors Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia And Lymphoma, Jessica Jakubiak Aug 2024

Adaptation And Evaluation Of Guideline-Based Family-Based Behavioral Treatment For Overweight And Obesity In Childhood Survivors Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia And Lymphoma, Jessica Jakubiak

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Children who survive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and lymphoma are at considerable risk for chronic, treatment-related medical complications known as “late effects.” Not only are these late effects significant in and of themselves, but many are exacerbated by excess weight, a particularly concerning combination given the elevated rates of overweight and obesity within this population. Although the therapeutic regimens (e.g., steroid “pulses”) endured by children who survive ALL and lymphoma may contribute to excess weight, accumulating evidence also demonstrates the development of poor dietary habits and inadequate levels of physical activity during cancer treatment. Such weight-related health behaviors appear to …

Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo Aug 2024

Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Refugee cultural backgrounds are different from the primary culture in which they live. Cultural barriers have been identified as contributing factors to disparities in mental health services among refugees in the host country. They face racism, discrimination, and marginalization that impede their access to mental health services compared to the host populations. The Western model of mental health services was developed for the unique needs of the European refugees and could not always meet the needs of the non-European refugee populations. The lack of culturally specific mental health services creates disparities in mental health services that affect the quality of …

How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen Aug 2024

How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

Frequent conflict is a significant relationship risk factor for divorce, but it has also been shown that religion strengthens marriages, specifically in ways that give direction and motivation for couples in resolving marital conflict or other marital hardships. Thus, a study of how successful religious couples resolve conflict is pertinent in helping us better understand how to strengthen marriages and families. Our qualitative study of 113 highly religious women of diverse faiths and races found that women's perceived relationship or connection with God reportedly impacted conflict resolution and coping with marital hardship. Results suggest greater reconciliation and unity with the …
