Development Of A Facility-Level Second Victim Syndrome Peer-Mentor Program: Program Design And Future Directions, Jacqueline Trammell, Noah Zanville, Caryn Alper

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Despite efforts to prevent errors, studies show that iatrogenic, or health care-related, errors continue to occur. Understandably, these errors, which can range in severity from near-misses to serious harm, can be devastating for the health care professionals involved, creating a potential second set of victims, in addition to the patient(s) that were harmed directly. Studies show that individuals struggling with second-victim syndrome (SVS) can be at increased risk for depression, burnout, and poor work performance. However, programs designed to develop peer mentors to support individuals struggling with SVS are poorly described.

Methods

Following a review of the literature, our …

Public-Private Partnerships In Tourism Development: An Analysis Of The Kuwait Experience, Obaid Al Otaibi

The Geographical Bulletin

Tourism and recreation has become one of the important and influential sectors in most of the modern economies. This sector has been accepted as one of the alternative sources of national income, employment, and foreign exchange. The state of Kuwait has many potentialities in tourism and recreation, and exploitation of this leads to more diversification of the economy besides augmenting its contribution to the GDP. Because Kuwait is an import oriented economy, it requires hard currencies (foreign exchange) to meet the import cost as well as to maintain stability in the international market. To compensate for the revenue fall stemmed …

When Wal-Mart Doesn’T Come To Town: Competitive Responses Of Established Retail Merchants In Edenton, North Carolina, Preston W. Mitchell, Derek H. Alderman, Jeffrey T. Webb, Dustin W. Stancil

The Geographical Bulletin

The study of retail geography is moving beyond an orthodox, spatial science tradition to include a consideration of the cultural and symbolic dimensions of retailing and consumption. This paper contributes to this emerging literature by exploring the cultural politics of retail change. The entry of a large format (or “big box”) retailer into a community is conceptualized as a socially contested process open to a variety of responses from local stakeholders. In the late 1990s, a coalition composed of elected officials, private citizens, and area business and property owners contested a possible plan to locate a Wal-Mart store in Edenton, …

Pioneer Migration To The Western Fringe Of Settlement:1837–1850, H. Jason Combs

The Geographical Bulletin

The Platte Purchase region did not become part of the state of Missouri until 1837. Prior to its annexation the area had been part of the territory reserved for Native American relocation. By 1850, the region had attracted over 40,000 pioneers from all areas of the globe. The majority of the early settlers followed the major river routes as they migrated west to the Platte region. The census data indicates that upon arrival many of these early pioneers clustered with other pioneers of similar heritage. As a result, there is a north-south settlement gradation present. Finally, the data highlights the …

Economic Strategies Of Two Early Bronze Age Villages In The Southern Levant: Explaining Coastal Abandonment Versus Inland Urban Development, Roey Nickelsberg, Anastasia Shapiro, Anat Cohen-Weinberger, Yitzhak Paz, Itai Elad, Assaf Yasur-Landau, Ruth Shahack-Gross

'Atiqot

The southern Levantine coast was settled continuously for three millennia, from the Neolithic period until its abandonment in Early Bronze Age II, in sharp contrast to inland sites that developed into urbanized cities. This study examines this phenomenon by investigating the pottery production component of the economic systems of two contemporary EB I villages: a shoreline coastal site that was abandoned (Dor South) and an inland site that evolved into an urban center (‘En Esur). This pilot ceramic petrography examination shows two distinct strategies, with ‘En Esur producing pottery primarily from local raw materials and Dor South relying mainly on …

The Village People: Social Aspects Of Rural Settlements—Comments On Method And Theory, Eyal Regev

'Atiqot

The village is usually viewed as a basic geographic and economic unit, characterized by unsophisticated social organization, limited interpersonal ties and weak external social networks. However, studies in rural archaeology and anthropology revealed that village life was more complex. This article offers a survey of several key theoretical issues relevant for interpreting archaeological remains of villages, farmsteads and estates/villas from a social perspective. It focuses mainly on the organization of the settlement as a holistic unit and the specific houses/households within it. The article seeks to explore the complex correlation between the spatial and social aspects of rural housing—the way …

No. 30: Pandemic Shocks And The Food Security Of Somali Migrants And Refugees In Nairobi, Kenya, Zack Ahmed, Jonathan Crush, Samuel Owuor

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered severe shocks to food security for marginalized populations in urban areas. Somali migrants and refugees in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood faced disproportionate impacts due to strict containment measures, disrupted food supply chains, and the shutdown of informal markets. These disruptions exacerbated existing socio-economic inequities, leading to heightened food insecurity. This paper examines the multi-dimensional effects of the pandemic on the food security of Somali migrants and refugees, focusing on their access to informal food networks and the broader socio-economic factors influencing their livelihoods. Utilizing a household survey and in-depth interviews conducted in August 2022, the study reveals …

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown Oct 2024

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown

Animal Sentience

This commentary examines the potential of tests of judgment bias to assess fish welfare in aquariums and zoos. Judgment bias offers a non-invasive approach to interpreting affective states in animals, using cognitive responses to ambiguous stimuli as indicators of mental wellbeing. Despite the constraints of captive environments—such as limited handling and species diversity in exhibits—recent adaptations of judgment-bias protocols make them suitable across taxa, including fishes. Collaborations with progressive zoos and aquariums could facilitate this research, based on the shared goal of enhancing animal welfare and promoting public education.
