Listen Up: Children’S And Adults’ Listening Effort For Intelligible L1 And L2 Speech, Ruth Altmiller
Listen Up: Children’S And Adults’ Listening Effort For Intelligible L1 And L2 Speech, Ruth Altmiller
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Understanding speech in an accent or dialect different than one’s own can be challenging. McLaughlin and Van Engen (2020) were the first to quantify this increase in listening effort using Task Evoked Pupillary Response (TEPR), a common measure of cognitive arousal. They found that monolingual, English speaking adults’ pupils dilated more quickly and to a larger degree when listening to nonnative English (here, L2 English) than when listening to natively spoken English (here, L1 English), indicating that the L2 English incurred greater processing demands than the L1 English even though it was fully intelligible. In this dissertation, I build upon …

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
With ever increasing misinformation and disinformation, it is more critical than ever for students to critically engage with their information environment. Integrating information fluency learning outcomes into curriculum is one step to ensuring students develop the ability to successfully navigate their information environment while in college and after they graduate. In response to this growing need and to support required elements of the Program Review Process, Milner Library established an initiative to integrate discipline-specific information fluency learning outcomes into departments, schools, and programs across the University.
The program is a cohort model where every academic year, Milner provides a series …

Waiving Snap Interviews During The Covid-19 Pandemic Increased Snap Caseloads, Colleen Heflin, William Clay Fannin, Leonard M. Lopoo, Siobhan O'Keefe
Center for Policy Research
Food insecurity in the United States reached historically high rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus substantially increasing demand for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). To facilitate access to SNAP during the pandemic, the federal government granted state SNAP offices the option to waive the interview requirement – an administrative burden associated with the SNAP certification process. This brief summarizes findings from a recent study that used data from SNAP offices across 10 states to examine the impact of SNAP interview waivers on SNAP caseloads from January 5th to April 30th of 2021. Findings reveal that counties that implemented the …

Are Too Many Or Too Few Babies Being Born?, E. Wesley F. Peterson
Cornhusker Economics
An additional 1.8 billion people will be added to the world’s population by 2050. At the same time, average incomes are likely to rise. Data from the Groningen Growth and Development Center suggest that average real (inflation-adjusted) GDP per capita increased by a factor of fifteen between 1820 and 2018 and World Bank data indicate that real per capita GDP more than tripled over the past 62 years. It is likely that these trends will continue and there will be more people with higher average incomes in the future straining global food systems and natural resources. Slower population growth rates …

Milner Library: Centering Healing As An Act Of Radical Transformation, Maria Tudela, Mallory Jallas
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Milner Library is uniquely positioned as a unit to facilitate student, faculty, and community success with our services and engagement. At this intersection, we implement critical praxis to disrupt traditional notions of academic libraries. Specifically, this poster will address shifting the concept of thriving as a form of production to one that considers how thriving can support and encourage transformational healing. This poster will highlight how our library approaches programming, collection development, instruction, and physical space and examine these concepts as tangible connections in foregrounding critical praxis. Participants can expect to develop new and deeper perspectives on how Milner Library …

Schools’ Records Management Also Matters: An Information Governance Maturity Model Assessment Of Records Management Practices At Mufakose 4 Secondary School In Harare, Zimbabwe, Patrick Mandizha, Samson Mutsagondo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
There has been a tendency to focus on universities and colleges each time researchers look at records management within the educational sector. Primary and secondary schools have many times been left behind, yet schools’ records management also matters. Using the ARMA International’s Information Governance Maturity Model, this study assesses how Mufakose 4 Secondary School in Zimbabwe fared in its records management programme with special focus on the eight principles of the ARMA International’s Information Governance Maturity Model, that is, accountability, transparency, integrity, protection, compliance, availability, retention and disposition. Each of these principles were further assessed on a scale of 1 …
Revised Aba Standard 303: Curricular, Pedagogical, And Substantive Questions, Steven W. Bender
Revised Aba Standard 303: Curricular, Pedagogical, And Substantive Questions, Steven W. Bender
Seattle University Law Review Online
ABA accreditation standards now require law schools to provide education and training on racism, bias, and cross-cultural competence. This seemingly straightforward mandate raises numerous questions as schools plan for and implement compliance. Here, I articulate and approach these compliance questions using insights drawn from critical theory—which supplies helpful guidance for responses and ultimately antiracism legal education that is more than minimalist. Armed with critical insights, lawyers are better equipped to contribute to the struggle to eradicate systemic social ills in law and society.

Competency-Based Personnel Selection Oklahoma - Site Intervention Logic Model, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Competency-Based Personnel Selection Oklahoma - Site Intervention Logic Model, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Intervention Summaries
Each QIC-WD site developed a logic model to serve as a visual representation of their selected intervention. All logic models included four main components: inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. Collectively, these demonstrate the resources and actions required to implement the program, as well as the associated result or changes anticipated through implementation of the program. The hypothesized relationships are represented by the pathways connecting the listed activities and anticipated outcomes. For more information see Site Overview.

Competency-Based Personnel Selection Oklahoma - Evaluation Overview, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Intervention Summaries
The QIC-WD evaluation was conducted with the support of the Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) to determine if a Competency-based Personnel Selection process was effective in improving workforce and child welfare outcomes.
Research Questions
The primary research questions concerned the ability of the structured hiring tools to predict job performance, tenure, and turnover. It was hypothesized that the use of the standardized hiring process would result in the selection of candidates who performed better and had lower rates of turnover and longer tenure than candidates hired using existing selection processes, see Logic Model. Intermediate outcomes examined included employee feelings of …
Competency-Based Personnel Selection Oklahoma - Theory Of Change, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Competency-Based Personnel Selection Oklahoma - Theory Of Change, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Intervention Summaries
During the needs assessment process three areas of opportunity were discussed for possible intervention at the Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) Division of Child Welfare Services:
- hiring of new workers,
- promotion decisions for lead worker and supervisor positions, and
- staff recognition and rewards.
Ultimately, one theory of change was developed to step through the “if, then” logic for implementation of a standardized hiring process to improve worker retention and performance.
The theory of change development process was informed by various data examined throughout the needs assessment, input from the Oklahoma QIC-WD Steering Committee, and relevant research and best practice for …

Cognitive Functioning Among U.S. Older Adults Differs By Gender And Urbanicity, Elizabeth Lawrence, Samantha John, Tirth Bhatta
Population Health Research Brief Series
There are no widely accessible and effective medical therapies to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias for the U.S. older adult population, making prevention of cognitive decline particularly important. Many social factors shape cognitive functioning, leading to disparities in cognitive functioning across groups and geographic areas. This data slice uses data from the Health Retirement Study to describe how cognitive functioning among adults ages 50+ differed by gender and across urban, suburban, and ex-urban areas in the U.S. from 1999-2016. The results show that cognitive functioning was higher among women than men, but these gender differences varied by …
