Undergraduate research experiences (URE) provide hands-on exposure to the research process but also aid in the development of self-efficacy and interest in research. In the study, students from distinct types of universities (two public and one private) were asked to take a survey before and after their URE. The results of the pre-and post were analyzed based on self-efficacy, interest in research, type of school, and gender. The results showed that there is no relationship between public and private school students and their research interests. The study's findings underscore the nuanced interplay between students' self-efficacy, gender, and engagement experiences, shedding …

Mitigating Supply Chain Disruptions With Artificial Intelligence (Ai)-Based Risk Management, Emily Do, Aaron Flores, Jason Sanchez
Posters - 2024
Supply chain disruptions are unforeseen events that hinder smooth flow of goods, services, and information within the supply chain network. Examples of supply chain disruptions includes shortages from sought-after items like essential health products in 2020, natural disasters, and geopolitical conflicts that can lead to transportation delays, quality control issues, unexpected demand fluctuations, and impacting overall business performance (McKendrick, 2023). Effective management of supply chain disruptions include proactive risk assessments and quick response strategies to mitigate impact to ensure operation continuation. Traditional risk management approaches reduce disruptions by maintaining service levels while minimizing inventory and predicting future demand for effective …

Comparing Activity Levels Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) During Snorkels To A Swimming Researcher, Sabrina Drouin, Erika Aguirre, Charles Lares
Posters - 2024
Bottlenose dolphins under professional care are provided with a range of enrichments that have a variety of features and levels of complexity at various frequencies (Lauderdale et al., 2022). In a previous study conducted by Brensing et al. (2015), they found that dolphins seemed to be attracted to adult swimmers, but only if they had ample space to swim. The purpose of this study is to examine dolphin activity level under two different conditions with humans in the water. We hypothesize that dolphin activity level will be higher during snorkel sessions than a single swimming researcher because there are more …

A Descriptive Study Of Baseline Activity Levels Of Tursiops Truncatus, Brianna M. Erck
Posters - 2024
Well-being of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) has been measured in many ways, including activity levels. Activity levels are composed of behaviors that vary with intensity and range from floats, breaches, perimeter swims, and aerials. Deviations from baseline behavior or activity level may be indicative of changes in state of well-being. The purpose of this study was to assess the activity level of a large social grouping of bottlenose dolphins in human care during baseline observations. A total of 215 5-min observation sessions were collected for a population of 15 to 18 bottlenose dolphins located in Roatán, Honduras between 2019-2024. The …

Longitudinal observations of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in managed care provide opportunities to assess behavior within different contexts, which may provide insights into individual and population wellbeing (e.g., Delfour et al., 2021; Serres et al., 2021). Since 2019, a longitudinal study on space use by bottlenose dolphins housed at a lagoon-based facility in Roatán, Honduras, has been conducted. Dolphin behavior and location data were collected with the goal of comparing behavior without humans present to varying contexts in which humans were present. The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess behaviors exhibited by dolphins in close proximity to a …

Beyond The Barrel: Understanding The Complexities Of Gun Violence In The United States, Jonathan Flores
Posters - 2024
The phenomenon of gun violence is a highly politicized and contentious issue in the United States. With instances of gun violence, such as school shootings, on the rise in recent years, and the media coverage on them, I wanted to investigate the contemptible issue of gun violence between the states of the country. Namely, I aimed to investigate the influence of politics on gun violence, to see if the political nature of states has an effect on gun violence. Research Hypothesis: There is a relationship between the political affiliation of states such that the more Democratic a state is, the …

Understanding Factors That Influence Black Caregivers' Ongoing Engagement In Behavioral Parent Training Programs, Jennifer L. Tomlin
Understanding Factors That Influence Black Caregivers' Ongoing Engagement In Behavioral Parent Training Programs, Jennifer L. Tomlin
Dissertations (1934 -)
Despite the efficacy of behavioral parent training programs (BPTs) in reducing young children’s challenging behaviors, ongoing caregiver engagement in these skill- based programs is poor, particularly in low-income Black populations. The existing literature relied heavily on associating client demographic variables with treatment attendance and focused almost exclusively on BPTs with older children. Contemporary conceptualizations of engagement view it as a multidimensional construct comprised of cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral components, and prior research has called for continued investigation into the caregiver-therapist alliance and cultural relevance of these treatment programs when looking at ways to increase Black caregiver engagement. The purpose of …

Toward A Continuum For Jesuit Education Founded Upon Cura Personalis And Magis, Jose Miguel Jaramillo
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines the principles and purposes of Jesuit education, renowned for integrating academic excellence with spiritual and civic values, in search of decision-making criteria. While Jesuit schools followed the 1599 Ratio studiorum, they now adhere to guidelines set by the International Commission for the Apostolate of Jesuit Education (ICAJE). Despite ICAJE's comprehensive framework, a gap exists in providing explicit criteria for educational decision-making beyond calling to discern. Employing a thematic qualitative content analysis method, this research analyzes ICAJE’s documents through a hermeneutic lens, drawing upon foundational Jesuit educational sources and significant contemporary studies. Key findings suggest that these principles …

Trainees' Experience Using Routine Outcome Monitoring (Rom) In Clinical Practice And Supervision, Craig Miller
Dissertations (1934 -)
Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is the frequent and systematic collection of client outcome data to inform treatment. A great deal of research supports the use of ROM as part of routine care to enhance clinical outcomes, especially for clients at risk of deterioration. Yet, while ROM is increasingly being incorporated into professional psychology training settings (e.g., VAs, academic training clinics), little research has examined training and supervision in ROM. This qualitative study therefore examines professional psychology trainees’ experiences using ROM during their clinical training. For the present study, qualitative interviews were conducted with 13 doctoral-level psychology graduate students (11 female, …

The Mental Health Management Of Individuals In Sex Work, Bianca Tocci
Dissertations (1934 -)
ABSTRACT:
This dissertation examines the mental health implications and experiences of individuals engaged in sex work, employing a constructivist grounded theory approach to explore the nuanced realities of this marginalized population. Through in-depth interviews with sex workers, this study reveals the complex interplay of positive aspects (enjoyment and empowerment), and the negative (severe risks faced by individuals in this field, including verbal abuse, physical violence, and sexual assault). The findings underscore the critical need for a holistic and nuanced understanding of sex work, challenging prevalent stereotypes and emphasizing the importance of ongoing consent, communication, and respect for sex workers' boundaries. …

Far From First Kill: Sapphic Fan Campaigns + The Fight For Queer Television, Lake Best
Honors Theses
Over the decades, LGBTQ+ media has had a long history of, despite getting better, more popular, more powerful each time, being canceled, delayed, even simply never seen again. This has led to justified anger, sorrow, + distress from the queer fandom communities, who, already inspired by the sense of activism that their community is founded on, have created over 8 years of online fan campaigning to fight back, maybe even bring the shows from the grave to a new life. This case study will examine 6 of those campaigns, ranging from the birth of modern queer fandom in We Deserve …

A Performative Model For Conducting Critical Race Analysis: Josephine Baker, Modern Dance, And Utilizing Narrative To Transform Legal Doctrine, Patrick C. Brayer
Faculty Works
This article proposes a performative model for analyzing the relationship between race and law by integrating narrative, modern dance, and performance as interpretive tools. Focusing on Josephine Baker’s activism and her 1952 return to St. Louis, the paper demonstrates how storytelling and artistic expression can expand legal scholarship and transform understandings of racial injustice. By bridging legal studies with performance, African American history, and cultural analysis, the work illustrates how embodied expression provides new pathways for confronting structural racism, transgenerational trauma, and the pursuit of social justice.
Generative Ai Large Language Models And Researching The Law, Paul D. Callister
Generative Ai Large Language Models And Researching The Law, Paul D. Callister
Faculty Works
The article discusses the transformative impact of generative AI large language models (LLMs) on legal research. Callister explores how these AI models, despite their current imperfections, are poised to shift the cognitive (or trusted) authority within the legal profession. He attributes this shift to the ease with which AI processes vast amounts of legal information and the anthropomorphic design of LLMs, which fosters trust among users. Callister introduces the concept of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), explaining how AI platforms integrate legal texts into their responses, enhancing their reliability over purely generative models. Through various examples, he demonstrates the strengths and limitations …
