The Individuality Of Bereavement: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Sudden Loss Trauma On Young Adults, Teaghan B. Brosokas
The Individuality Of Bereavement: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Sudden Loss Trauma On Young Adults, Teaghan B. Brosokas
Senior Theses
While death of a loved one or peer is likely experienced by everyone at least once in their lifetime, bereavement is far from a universalized experience. Just as no two people are alike, no two relationships are alike. Thus, no two losses breed the same after-effects. Multiple factors influence the individual characteristics of bereavement, such as mode of loss, relationship to the deceased, and possible societal barriers. This study explores the impact of a sudden unexpected death on young adults based on their relational closeness to the deceased, including plausible reasoning behind reactions and influences on post-loss adjustment. Young adults …
The Role Of Sport For Adolescents: The Effect Of Sport Participation As A Unique Form Of Physical Activity On Mental Health And Overall Subjective Well-Being During Adolescence, Caleb M. Rogers
Senior Theses
Well-being is an extremely multifaceted domain, as there are numerous factors that contribute to one’s way of life. Objective well-being focuses primarily on material factors such as access to food, housing, and a steady household income. Although these factors play a large role, it is important to analyze well-being from the perspective of the individual. Subjective well-being focuses on how one perceives one's own well-being. Physical activity has been well established as one factor associated with improvements within this domain for adolescents. This project investigates the role of one specific form of physical activity during adolescence: sport. The general assumption …

Plath Fostered It, Women Are Nurturing It: Cycles Of Existential And Confessional Women's Writing In The Mid-20th Century And Beyond, Sophie Elisabeth Conrad
Senior Theses
During the mid-20th century, a wide-ranging yet topically focused genre of women’s writing began to emerge in earnest, currently categorized as existential and confessional. Works like Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex (1949) and Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique (1963) offer explanations of why an ineffable feeling of malaise permeated the lives of 20th-century women and led them to adopt these methods of writing and thinking. However, existential feelings akin to that of the 20th-century female malaise have returned to stake their claim on the minds of 21st-century women, evidenced in popular contemporary works such as Otessa Moshfegh’s My Year …
Building Support And Community For Young Black Students Through Inclusivity In Academia: A Black-Centric Podcast, Jackson E. Mcfadden
Building Support And Community For Young Black Students Through Inclusivity In Academia: A Black-Centric Podcast, Jackson E. Mcfadden
Senior Theses
With digital media becoming such an important aspect of modern life, it is worth exploring the complex relationships that it holds with the various people who utilize it. It is clear that one’s identity can greatly impact one’s ability to utilize digital content for additional social and cultural education that is difficult to acquire in a classroom setting. In this project, the Black community’s relationship with digital media was summarized and reflected upon, making the argument that the representation of Black individuals in media is at worst harmful and in general unproductive. To encourage young Black individuals to consider how …
The Lawgiver And "The Progress Of Evil", Andre Chang
The Lawgiver And "The Progress Of Evil", Andre Chang
Senior Theses
The study advances a reinterpretation of Madison’s concept of “constitutional liquidation,” presenting it not merely as a theory of legal interpretation but as a broader political strategy for preserving republican government amid recurring crises. Through an analysis of Madison’s responses to the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, and the nullification controversy, the thesis demonstrates how Madison sought to balance constitutional stability with principled conflict, allowing fundamental questions of authority, justice, and union to be resolved through disciplined public deliberation rather than force or procedural formalism.
Finally, the thesis contends that Madison’s commitment to national supremacy and …
A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
Political Science and International Relations Theses
The election of Donald Trump appeared to be a rejection of Republican orthodoxy. That someone who targeted the previous idols of Republican beliefs about free trade, protectionism, immigration, and welfare could have so completely won over the Republican voter base was notable. However, that Republican base had changed substantially since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Where white college graduates have traditionally voted more Republican, and those without a college degree were more Democratic in this era, this dynamic had switched by 2016. In this thesis, I ask two questions: First, how has the Republican Party changed its ideological …

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)
Agricultural drought occurs in various irrigation areas in Indonesia, one of which is the Jatiluhur Reservoir’s irrigation area. Agricultural drought in this area occurs due to several factors, including the natural phenomenon of climate anomalies which causes the length of the dry season, and also due to less optimal irrigation networks, damaged networks and other obstacles. But, not all agricultural land in the irrigated area experiences drought. Agricultural land affected by drought is important to know its spatial and temporal distribution to determine priority locations in drought disaster management, especially on agricultural land. Therefore, this study aims to examine the …

How Academics & Policymakers Can Collaborate Effectively: Lessons From Using Behavioral Science To Improve U.S. Federal Government Policies, S. O'Flaherty, L. Martin, Syon Bhanot, C. Hall, S. Jilke, T. Simko, M. Steffel
Economics Faculty Works
The U.S. government administers many public programs and services. Creating programs that work requires an understanding of the psychological processes that influence behavior. To this end, policymakers may collaborate with academics who have expertise in behavioral science to generate ideas for improving existing programs, procedures, or policies; to test existing programs; or to design wholly new programs that address societal problems. Such collaborations also enable academics to test new or established theories in real-world settings. In this article, we draw on our collective experience in the U.S. Office of Evaluation Sciences, where we have worked on studies that evaluate various …
The Necropolis Of Lattara: An Examination Into Gender, Socioeconomic, And Ethnic Identities In A Funerary Context Following The Roman Conquest Of Mediterranean Gaul, Heather Fusco
Student Publications
This paper investigated how material goods both represented and actively created ethnic identity, gender, and socioeconomic status in a funerary context during a colonial period. Relying on evidence collected from a Roman-period necropolis from Lattara in Mediterranean France, these results were then examined alongside funerary evidence from the necropolis of the nearby Iron Age settlement of Ambrussum to compare pre-Roman and Roman funerary practices. Specifically, within the two necropolises, the grave goods, inscriptions, and biologically sexed remains were the main points of comparison. This paper also utilized the ideas and concepts from the subdivision of funerary archaeology, as well as …

Posters - 2024
Violent crimes inflict not only direct physical harm but can also foster cycles of fear and mental anguish throughout affected communities.
This atmosphere can hurt and impede economic and social development. Destruction of a community’s trust in law enforcement can infect other areas of life such worsening economic development. In this, we will continue our evaluation of factors contributing to violent crime rates by exploring the following hypothesis through additional study.
This hypothesis is as follows: There is a relationship between political affiliation and violent crime rates such that democratic states have higher rates of violent crime.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric illness characterized by distress and excessive preoccupation with perceived defects in physical appearance that are not at all, or only slightly, observable to others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). BDD can be found in many individuals; among these individuals are women in the fitness industry. This is due to the idea that there is an “ideal” body image portrayed by fitness industries that provoke women to compare themselves. This study examined a variety of fitness websites consisting of fitness apparel websites and fitness websites, where the models used in each website were examined for …

The Relation Of Self-Compassion And Belongingness Among Adults From India Living In San Antonio, Tx, Usa, John Baptist
Posters - 2024
Self-compassion, a perspective of self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity, is a healthy way of relating to self and is correlated with psychological wellbeing (Neff, 2003). Baumeister and Leary (1995) defined belongingness as a fundamental human need for frequent, affectively pleasant interactions with a few other people in the context of stable, enduring, and affective concern for each other. Self-compassion was inversely related to perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness among college students (Umphrey et al., 2021). A longitudinal study among Asian-American students found that thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness contributed to higher interpersonal shame and depression. An increase in selfcompassion was …

Bottlenose dolphin behavior and complex social structures have interested humans over the years. Dolphin deviation in these behaviors has been measured many ways such as activity levels, space used, and time of day. A study was focused on dolphin interactions with humans, patterns of lagoon space utilization, and temporal factors. Data have been collected at the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS), which houses a diverse sample of 16-18 dolphins. No correlation was observed between increased human presence and levels of dolphin activity. Dolphins did display higher preferences for specific lagoon areas. This variability in lagoon space utilization suggests an …

One of the most polarizing topics in the United States is politics, especially regarding the Executive Branch of the United States of America. Trust in the President is at an all time low, and we wonder what has provoked this change. The role of media in spreading information is essential to understanding levels of trust. While we know the press can alter politics through information, the validity of this information is uncertain. In today's society, confidence in the press is questioned as even the media is polarized. This caused me to hypothesize, there is a relationship between confidence in the …

Without understanding the effectiveness of supranational organizations, international communities risk becoming negatively impacted through the means of inaccurate support via financial aid through investment projects. This study examines the link between investment project success and support from supranational organizations. Analyzing 4,273 projects across 137 countries from the World Bank’s Private Participation in Infrastructure (PPI) 2022 report, it suggests a …

Dolphin-human interaction programs (DIP) References have become a popular experience offering humans an opportunity to interact or swim with cetaceans, most often bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).
● Previous studies on dolphin-human interactions have been centered on therapeutic results for humans (Brensing et al., 2005), guests’ future conservation efforts, and educational efficacy (Miller et al., 2013) rather than welfare or outcomes for dolphins (Smith, 1981).
● Under human care, trainers request behaviors from dolphins typically via a hand signal as a discriminative stimulus (SD).
● Resulting behavioral responses to these SDs during interaction programs may suggest willingness to participate (WTP), and …

Undergraduate research experiences (URE) provide hands-on exposure to the research process but also aid in the development of self-efficacy and interest in research. In the study, students from distinct types of universities (two public and one private) were asked to take a survey before and after their URE. The results of the pre-and post were analyzed based on self-efficacy, interest in research, type of school, and gender. The results showed that there is no relationship between public and private school students and their research interests. The study's findings underscore the nuanced interplay between students' self-efficacy, gender, and engagement experiences, shedding …
