When Traditional Outreach Isn't Working: How To Reach Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Horne

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

What is a library liaison to do when traditional outreach strategies aren’t working and you can't get buy-in by faculty for instruction sessions for undergraduates? This session will explore the alternative methods of outreach I used to try to “crack” the business school in the absence of in-class instruction opportunities, including a focus on connecting with college staff, direct communication with students through existing college communication channels, and targeted outreach to subsets of students, including international students.

A Look Into The Impact Of Bloomberg Anywhere At The University Of Notre Dame, Michael Deike

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

The COVID-19 pandemic presented a set of unique challenges for libraries’ online access policies and procedures. One resource which exemplified many of these challenges is the newly offered Bloomberg Anywhere service. As a resource which traditionally required on site access to a physical terminal, the extension of Bloomberg Anywhere remote access to academic institutions as a COVID-19 contingency revealed many of the positive and negative consequences of the increased focus on remote access during the pandemic. This talk reports the experience of the Thomas Mahaffey Jr. Business Library at the University of Notre Dame with Bloomberg Anywhere. Topics include the …

Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard Oct 2021

Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards in the wake of 2020, we need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with our collections decisions. Critical Librarianship is at the forefront of work being done by librarians across the country. Related to this concept, there is an existing body of literature about the contents of the collections themselves, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the specific business relationships we maintain in order to acquire these collections. Are the values of our partners in the publishing ecosystem aligned with ours? What …

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil Oct 2021

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Middle Eastern violence and terrorism are not novel subjects in world cinema, especially American cinema. The Arab or Muslim other in these films is always presented as someone who epitomises a culture of violence, directed mostly against innocent civilians. Against the backdrop of Hollywood’s stereotypical representation of Middle-Easterners as advocate of indiscriminate terror and terrorism, Arab filmmakers have turned in recent years to the representation of terror and religious extremism. Paradise Now (Abu Assad 2005) and Horses of God (Ayouch 2012) address the controversial issue of suicide bombing with the same motivation: to examine the choice of suicide bombing within …

Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang Oct 2021

Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The absence of female characters and their voices in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) has been previously examined. On the surface, this fiction focuses on the struggle and survival of a group of boys who are left alone on a Pacific island against the background of nuclear warfare. The only presence of women in the story seems to be the aunt via a boy’s narration. However, when approaching the fiction through the lens of ecofeminism, we can find a range of feminized entities which are metaphorically embodied in the natural surroundings of the secluded island. The boys’ interactions …

‘Convicted Of Patricide?’: Robert Frost’S Nationalism In The Eyes Of Contemporary Arab-American Women Writers, Eman K. Mukattash

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Given the culturally expansive nature of the American literary tradition of today, the question of the relevance of Robert Frost’s poetry to the poetry of contemporary Arab-American women writers is an issue worth digging into. Writing almost one hundred years ago does not make Frost’s poetry out of date. Frost’s poetry is as relevant to today’s America as it has been to the America of his days. And this can be ascribed to the multiplicity of perspectives he presents in his poetry as he examines crucial questions lying at the core of America’s “grand narrative of national development.” (Westover 2004: …

Assessment Of The Mate Retention Inventory-Short Form Using Item Response Theory, Patrick J. Nebl, Mark G. Mccoy, Garett C. Foster, Michael J. Zickar

Psychology Faculty Publications

The mate retention inventory (MRI) has been a valuable tool in the field of evolutionary psychology for the past 30 years. The goal of the current research is to subject the MRI to rigorous psychometric analysis using item response theory to answer three broad questions. Do the individual items of the MRI fit the scale well? Does the overall function of the MRI match what is predicted? Finally, do men and women respond similarly to the MRI? Using a graded response model, it was found that all but two of the items fit acceptable model patterns. Test information function analysis …

There is limited research on vicarious trauma among therapists who treat sexual offenders and who have a personal history of sexual abuse (Cunningham, 2003). The purpose of this study is to identify how a personal history of sexual abuse, and specific characteristics of the sexual abuse therapists have experienced, may influence the experience of vicarious trauma among therapists who work with sex offenders. The study surveyed clinicians who work with sex offenders in order to examine the relationship between their experiences of sexual abuse and vicarious trauma. The survey included a demographic questionnaire, the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), and …

Ecological Selectivity And The Evolution Of Mammalian Substrate Preference Across The K–Pg Boundary, Jonathan J. Hughes, Jacob S. Berv, Stephen G. B. Chester, Eric J. Sargis, Daniel J. Field Oct 2021

Ecological Selectivity And The Evolution Of Mammalian Substrate Preference Across The K–Pg Boundary, Jonathan J. Hughes, Jacob S. Berv, Stephen G. B. Chester, Eric J. Sargis, Daniel J. Field

Publications and Research

The Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) mass extinction 66 million years ago was characterized by a worldwide ecological catastrophe and rapid species turnover. Large-scale devastation of forested environments resulting from the Chicxulub asteroid impact likely influenced the evolutionary trajectories of multiple clades in terrestrial environments, and it has been hypothesized to have biased survivorship in favour of nonarboreal lineages across the K–Pg boundary. Here, we evaluate patterns of substrate preferences across the K–Pg boundary among crown group mammals, a group that underwent rapid diversification following the mass extinction. Using Bayesian, likelihood, and parsimony reconstructions, we identify patterns of mammalian ecological selectivity that are …
