Examining Interviewers’ Ratings Of Respondents’ Health: Does Location In The Survey Matter For Interviewers’ Evaluations Of Respondents?, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema
Examining Interviewers’ Ratings Of Respondents’ Health: Does Location In The Survey Matter For Interviewers’ Evaluations Of Respondents?, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Interviewers’ ratings of survey respondents’ health (IRH) are a promising measure of health to include in surveys as a complementary measure to self-rated health. However, our understanding of the factors contributing to IRH remains incomplete. This is the first study to examine whether and how it matters when in the interview interviewers evaluate respondents’ health in a face-to-face survey, in an experiment embedded in the UK Innovation Panel Study. We find that interviewers are more likely to rate the respondent’s health as “excellent” when IRH is rated at the end of the interview compared to the beginning. Drawing from the …

Underpinnings And Equal Terms: Using An Exhibit As An Entry Point For Engaging Undergraduate Students In The Research Process, Rebecca Fitzsimmons
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Studying exhibits offers students many entry points for critically evaluating information and images. They are also effective tools for engaging students in research to better understand how to refine their research questions and construct compelling narratives. This poster focuses on the use of the online women’s suffrage themed exhibit Underpinnings and Equal Terms to teach undergraduate students visual and information literacy skills and engage them in archival research. Using this exhibit curated from archival and special collections materials as a starting point, students in an introductory Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies course explored how the overarching theme and subnarratives were …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
At the University of Nebraska-Omaha, faculty librarians’ work focuses on three areas: librarianship, service, and research. This work is organized to fulfill the university Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure. The process can be daunting, especially for new faculty. To help make this process easier, we created a specific peer group to better meet the varied needs of pre-tenured library faculty. The librarians and archivists in this group are from different departments in the library, illustrating the importance of having shared experiences and varied perspectives. This panel will demonstrate the value of a cross-departmental peer group, providing attendees with ideas to emulate …

Optimal Regulatory Response To Food Fraud, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Konstantinos Giannakas
Cornhusker Economics
Food fraud refers to the deliberate substitution, addition, tampering, or misrepresentation of food for economic gains. In this context, food fraud can be divided into two broad categories: food adulteration and mislabeling. While food adulteration can be defined as the intentional substitution or addition of substances in a food product to reduce its costs of production, mislabeling refers to acts of misrepresentation of the type or quality of food products. Food fraud is motivated by economic gains and is enabled by the fact that information about the nature of credence goods is typically asymmetric – while product suppliers know the …

A Survey Of Researchers’ Needs And Priorities For Data Sharing, Iain Hrynaszkiewicz, James Harney, Lauren Cadwallader
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
One of the ways in which the publisher PLOS supports open science is via a stringent data availability policy established in 2014. Despite this policy, and more data sharing policies being introduced by other organizations, best practices for data sharing are adopted by a minority of researchers in their publications. Problems with effective research data sharing persist and these problems have been quantified by previous research as a lack of time, resources, incentives, and/or skills to share data.
In this study we built on this research by investigating the importance of tasks associated with data sharing, and researchers’ satisfaction with …

Burnout In The Nursing Profession: Extant Knowledge And Future Directions For Research And Practice, Sara Labelle
Nursing Communication
Burnout is a psychological state resulting from prolonged psychological or emotional job stress, and is a culmination of three factors: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Due to the nature of the “people-work” they must constantly perform, along with a highly stressful and unpredictable work environment, nurses have alarmingly high rates of burnout among members of their profession. Given the importance of research on burnout to understanding the context-specific stressors and challenges of nursing, this review offers a synthesis of research published in the last decade in both nursing and communication journals, with an emphasis on discussing opportunities for …

Nursing Communication
Health care in the U.S. is a dynamic and demanding field faced with many challenges such as an aging population, coupled with increases in chronic diseases and conditions (e.g., heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis). Addressing these challenges involves ongoing communication among numerous constituents comprised of health care providers (physicians, nurses, therapists), health administrators, patients, family members, and/or other caregivers. Part of managing a chronic illness, for example, is coordinating information surrounding the condition such as disclosing health information to others. The purpose of this article is twofold: First, we examine current “disclosure” research (referred to …

TREC Webinar Series
Drawing from the framework of social determinants of health, the objective of this study is to investigate the cross-sectional association between transportation-related factors and self-perceived physical health among adults in the U.S.
Data for this study were derived from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey. An analytic sample of 71,235 respondents aged 18 and 64 years was analyzed using binary logistic regression. Of the 71,235 respondents examined, 8.9% perceived their physical health to be poor. About 36% of the respondents had fewer vehicles per individuals in the household.
Controlling for the effects of other factors, respondents who had fewer vehicles …

Financial Knowledge Or Financial Situations? Toward Understanding Why Some College Students Use Credit Cards To Pay For College Tuition, Benjamin D. Andrews
Financial Knowledge Or Financial Situations? Toward Understanding Why Some College Students Use Credit Cards To Pay For College Tuition, Benjamin D. Andrews
Journal of Student Financial Aid
While the majority of college students use credit cards for educational expenses like textbooks, recent data reports that college students also use credit cards to directly fund their schooling by charging for at least some part of their tuition (Sallie Mae, 2009). Because credit cards carry a higher interest rate than student loans, and because they do not have a period of deferred payment while a student is enrolled in school, credit cards are a particularly risky method of payment that students resort to in order to attend college. Why do college students participate in such risky spending behavior to …

The U.S. Child Care Subsidy Program Is Underused But Well-Positioned To Promote Racial Equity, Taryn Morrissey, Colleen Heflin, William Fannin
Population Health Research Brief Series
Child care is expensive and difficult to find, especially for infants and toddlers. Compared to their higher-income peers, children from lower-income families are less likely to attend out-of-home early childhood care – which tend to be more expensive but provides more stability and is higher quality than home-based care. This contributes to disparities in school readiness and later life outcomes. This brief summarizes findings from a recently published paper examining administrative data from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Findings suggest that children are least likely to receive subsides when they are infants and toddlers despite early childhood care being the most …

Advancing Behavioral Health Literacy, James Scollione
Advancing Behavioral Health Literacy, James Scollione
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Accessing, comprehending, and using information to make informed decisions and improve one’s overall health or well-being are the foci of health literacy. The concept of behavioral health was introduced in the early 1980s and, since then, it has influenced new ideas (e.g., behavioral health literacy and integrated behavioral health care) and gained research and public attention. My aim is to provide an overview of definitions (i.e., health literacy, mental health literacy, and behavioral health literacy) and their connection to each other. I propose an expanded and honed definition of behavioral health literacy to enhance the behavioral health literacy and well-being …
When Labor Enforcement And Immigration Enforcement Collide: Deterring Worker Complaints Worsens Workplace Safety, Amanda M. Grittner, Matthew S. Johnson
When Labor Enforcement And Immigration Enforcement Collide: Deterring Worker Complaints Worsens Workplace Safety, Amanda M. Grittner, Matthew S. Johnson
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Regulatory agencies overseeing the labor market often rely on worker complaints to direct their enforcement. However, if workers face differential barriers to complain, this system could result in ineffective targeting and create disparities in working conditions. To investigate these implications, we examine how the onset of Secure Communities—a localized immigration enforcement program—affected occupational safety and health. Counties’ participation in Secure Communities substantially reduced complaints to government safety regulators, but increased injuries, at workplaces with Hispanic workers. We show that these effects are most consistent with employers reducing safety inputs in response to workers’ decreased willingness to complain.

Notes on Lexical Insertion
Our objective in this article is to present a theory which questions the operation of lexical insertion considered as a substitution operation. We will show that this operation is intimately linked to the formal organization of grammar, to such an extent that calling it into question would lead to a profound reorganization of the model of representing linguistic knowledge.

The Implications of Emigration inthe Medina of Tunis
Taking into account its economic and political interests in Tunisia, French colonization did not hesitate to lead to a cleavage between the interior of the country and its coast on the one hand and between the interior and the capital on the other. The negative effects of this policy were numerous, as were the socio-cultural, spatial and economic differences. Thus, the coast and the capital were the center of interest of national and / or foreign decision-makers.Our analysis will focus on the mutations caused in the medina of Tunis following the arrival …

Ifni: A Small Town, from Fishing to Illegal Immigration
A Spanish enclave until 1969, Sidi Ifni has long played the role of a strategic military base for the Spanish North African colonies (42,000 men in 1950). The only accompanying Spanish economic activity revolved around fishing. The departure of the Spanish caused a real economic downturn followed by a voluntary emigration of the population of Ifni to the Iberian Peninsula and / or to the Canary Islands. This massive emigration and the regression of the fishing activity caused, in the socio-economic absence of …
