Metadata Remediation Of Legacy Digital Collections: Efficient Large-Scale Metadata Clean-Up With A Sleek Workflow And A Handy Tool, Marina Georgieva
Library Faculty Research
Metadata remediation of digital collections is inevitable. At some point, each repository faces the need to clean-up digital collections legacy metadata so that it conforms to new standards. Typically, this need emerges either as a response to an updated metadata application profile, or as preparation for migration to a new digital asset management system (DAMS). Normalized metadata is critical for an improved search experience and easy discovery of digital objects.
This case study focuses on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) experience of cleaning up and preparing non-MARC metadata for migration to a new DAMS. The author shares her …

Evaluation Of A Transportation Incentive Program For Affordable Housing Residents, Roshin Kurian, Huijun Tan, Nathan Mcneil, John Macarthur
PSU Transportation Seminars
This seminar presents the results from the Transportation Wallet for Residents of Affordable Housing (TWRAH) pilot program launched by the City of Portland’s Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). The program provided a set of transportation incentives for low-income participants including a $308 pre-paid visa card which could be applied to public transit or other transportation services, a free bike share membership, and access to discounted rates on several services. The researchers conducted a survey with the program’s participants to understand how they used the Transportation Wallet and how the program helped them use different modes to get around. The main findings …
Oneida College Lacrosse Players’ Perspectives Of The Sacred Game Of Lacrosse, Thomas Reed
Oneida College Lacrosse Players’ Perspectives Of The Sacred Game Of Lacrosse, Thomas Reed
Dissertations
Oneida college lacrosse players have an important perspective on the sacred game of lacrosse that needs to be heard. The Oneida are one of six tribes of the Haudenosaunee, or also known as, the Iroquois. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the style played today is most similar to the Haudenosaunee style. Oneidas are traditionally orators and lacrosse players. There is a lack of literature on the Oneida, lacrosse, and education. Oneida college lacrosse players face a problem in attempting to preserve their traditional Indigenous knowledge at their respective university communities, while also seeking …

Mindsets And Perfectionism In College Students, Sarah E. Spencer
Research Symposium
This study was designed to examine the relationship between mindsets and perfectionism as well as how perfectionist types differ on measures of mindset in college and graduate students between 18 and 25 years of age. Results indicate that mindsets are related to perfectionism. In the total sample (N = 282), discrepancy was negatively related to intelligence growth mindsets (r = -.18). Amongst perfectionists (n = 187), discrepancy was positively related to person fixed mindsets (r = .14) and negatively related to intelligence growth mindsets (r = -.24), whereas high standards were negatively related to intelligence growth mindsets (r = -.15). …

Racial Sympathy And Support For Capital Punishment: A Case Study In Concept Transfer, Kellie R. Hannan, Francis T. Cullen, Leah C. Butler, Amanda Graham, Alexander L. Burton, Velmer S. Burton Jr.
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Beliefs about race, especially racial resentment, are key predictors of public support for capital punishment and punitiveness generally. Drawing on a conceptual innovation by political scientist Jennifer Chudy, we explore the utility of transferring into criminology her construct of racial sympathy – or Whites’ concern about Blacks’ suffering. First, across three data sets, we replicate Chudy’s finding that racial sympathy and resentment are empirically distinct constructs. Second, based on a national-level 2019 YouGov survey (n = 760 White respondents) and consistent with Chudy’s thesis, racial sympathy is then shown to be significantly related to the race-specific view that capital punishment …

Parenting In Poor Health: Examining Associations Between Parental Health, Prescription Drug Use, And Child Maltreatment, Jennifer Price Wolf, Bridget Freisthler, Karla Shockley Mccarthy
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Rationale
Child maltreatment and problematic parenting are related to negative outcomes for children. Poor parental health could be a risk factor for problematic parenting through several mechanisms: 1) inadequate emotional regulation and coping; 2) impairment of parental capacity; and, 3) impairment of the parent-child relationship.
Objective
This study examines relationships between self-rated parental health, prescription drug use, and a broad array of negative parenting outcomes.
Methods
A sample of general population parents of children aged ten and younger was recruited from 30 mid-sized cities in California (n = 681). Weighted mixed-effects negative binomial and logistic regression models were used to …

Wisdom Narratives: Communicated Sense-Making In Emerging Adulthood Autoimmune Disease, Jacqueline Gunning
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Under the umbrellas of Communicated Sense-making (CSM, Koenig Kellas & Kranstuber Horstman, 2015), the current study explored 25 stories of illness told by assigned female at birth individuals with autoimmune disease. Using both the Theory of Memorable Messages (ToMM, Cooke-Jackson & Rubinsky, 2021) and Communicated Narrative Sense-making Theory (CNSM, Koenig Kellas, 2018), findings reveal helpful and harmful interpersonal memorable messages received across their illness journeys, as well as lessons learned and wisdom gained from disruptive chronic illness onset at a young age. Participants identified messages of belief, support, and interest as helpful while navigating disease, whereas they saw messages of …
Does Subjective Time Cost Explain Cognitive Task Choices?, Raina Ashley Isaacs
Does Subjective Time Cost Explain Cognitive Task Choices?, Raina Ashley Isaacs
Theses and Dissertations
The current literature suggests that subjective time duration could be the common currency used for task choice. However, few studies have been conducted that use non-physical tasks for their task choice options. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine if subjective time duration is the common currency for task choice regardless of task type. Participants first provided their subjective time estimates for each of the perceptual-motor and cognitive tasks that have been a priori determined to be at the medium difficulty level. Two cognitive tasks (item generation and math problem task) and one perceptual-motor task with a …

Four-In-Five Adults Are Vaccinated Or Intend To Get A Vaccine, Sarah Boege
Carsey Publications
In this data snapshot, author Sarah Boege reports that by March 29, one-quarter of U.S. adults reported that they had already received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, 39.1 percent hadn’t yet been vaccinated but reported that they will “definitely” get one when available and another 17.4 percent said that they “probably” will. However, 10.1 percent of adults will “probably not” and 8.2 percent will “definitely not” get a vaccine.
These data suggest that a large majority of adults could be vaccinated in the coming months, but experts see risks in having a sizeable group remain …

Preceptorship Within Accredited Nutrition And Dietetics Programs: A Pragmatic Mixed Methods Study, Angela K. Brekken
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this pragmatic mixed-methods study was to identify the factors that impact a nutrition professional’s preceptorship decision and potential solutions to combat preceptor shortages within accredited nutrition and dietetics programs. Homan’s social exchange theory provided the theoretical framework that if perceived costs of preceptorship outweigh the perceived benefits, then the activity will cease.
Phase one of the study included an online mixed-methods questionnaire. Phase two included a qualitative focus group and interview with self-identified volunteers from phase one. Quantitative analysis through SPSS included descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (one-way ANOVA). Qualitative data for both …

No Publication Favelas! Latin America's Vision For Open Access, Monica Berger
No Publication Favelas! Latin America's Vision For Open Access, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Open access was intended to be the great equalizer but its promise has not come to fruition in many lower-income countries of the Global South. Under-resourcing is only one of the many reasons why these scholars and publishers are marginalized. In order to examine inequality in our global scholarly communications system, we can compare a negative and a positive outgrowth of this imbalance. Predatory publishing represents a a weak imitation of traditional, commercial journal publishing. In contrast, Latin America’s community-based, quality scholarly infrastructure is anti-colonial. It can be argued that Latin America’s publishing infrastructure represents one solution to predatory publishing. …

Effective Methods Of Alphabet Instruction For Preschool, Kelsey Throne
Celebration of Research
When children complete preschool with strong alphabet knowledge, there is a higher likelihood that they will read at a level of proficiency or above by third grade. Third-grade reading proficiency is highly predictive of school success factors, including continued reading fluency and high school graduation rates. This research compares two different teaching strategies to determine the most effective way to teach the alphabet to preschool students. When considering the pace in which the alphabet is taught, some classrooms teach a letter a week whereas other classrooms teach one letter a day. Multiple studies were analyzed to determine the best approach …

The Impact Of Distance From Home On Student-Athlete’S Gpa At Northwestern College, Misael Bruzzone, Hailey Louw
Celebration of Research
In this paper we study the impact of distance from home on GPA amongst Northwestern College students and focus on the student-athlete demographic. Using data from 2013 - 2016 freshman admissions, we show that distance is the largest deterrent to freshman GPA amongst student athletes even when compared to financial need and gender. We show that athletic participation alone is not a significant determinant of freshman GPA when previous academic performance and financial need are taken into consideration and held constant. In addition to this, we also show that distance alone is not a major deterrent to GPA, however, amongst …

Avoiding The Advantageous: Identifying Mental Health Treatment Barriers In High-Risk Professions, Hannah Paauw
Celebration of Research
There is a large mental health treatment gap around the world that impacts the mental, physical, and economic well-being of all. A major reason for the treatment gap is the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Often this stigma is manifested in explicit and implicit bias. This study examined different barriers to mental health treatment for those in law enforcement and health care. Potential barriers to seeking psychological help include implicit and explicit bias, lack of knowledge about mental illness, personal and professional exposure to mental illness, and a lack of mental health training. The results of this study show that …

What do kids know about God, in particular God in the three parts of the trinity? In this ongoing research we are interviewing children to investigate their understanding of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We are recruiting local children, between the ages of 3 and 12 years old to interview over Zoom. Once interviews are complete we will explore common themes and understandings of God and how these might change over time.

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is a common experience among young adults characterized by the apprehension that others are having rewarding experiences from which one is absent. The present study investigates the construct of FoMO through simulated experiences in order to clarify the context in which FoMO occurs and to examine its relationship with emotion regulation, counterfactual-seeking, and negative affect. The vignette had a significant effect of increasing feelings of FoMO which was positively associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, counterfactual-seeking, and both regret and disappointment. Feelings of FoMO were significantly greater in the enjoyable task in comparison to the …
