Communication Technology Intention To Use And Use By Cognitively Intact Long-Term Nursing Home Residents, Amy M. Schuster Jan 2020

Communication Technology Intention To Use And Use By Cognitively Intact Long-Term Nursing Home Residents, Amy M. Schuster

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

The goal of this dissertation was to gain an in depth understanding of intention to use and use of communication technology (CT) by long-term cognitively intact nursing home residents. This study also explored the value of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) as a framework for investigating the CT use of long-term cognitively intact nursing home residents. A convergent mixed methods design was used to gather data through semi-structured interviews, a nursing home resident communication technology checklist, a modified UTAUT questionnaire, the UCLA loneliness scale 10 item version, and the self-rated health scale. Participants (n …

The Effects Of E-Cigarette Taxes On E-Cigarette Prices And Tobacco Product Sales: Evidence From Retail Panel Data, Chad Cotti, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joanna Catherine Maclean, Erik Nesson, Michael F. Pesko, Nathan Tefft Jan 2020

The Effects Of E-Cigarette Taxes On E-Cigarette Prices And Tobacco Product Sales: Evidence From Retail Panel Data, Chad Cotti, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joanna Catherine Maclean, Erik Nesson, Michael F. Pesko, Nathan Tefft

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

We explore the effect of e-cigarette taxes enacted through 2017 in eight states and two large counties on e-cigarette prices, e-cigarette sales, and sales of other tobacco products. We use the Nielsen Retail Scanner data for the years 2011 to 2017, comprising approximately 35,000 retailers nationally. We calculate a Herfindahl–Hirschman Index of 0.251 for retail-based purchases of e-cigarettes, indicating high market concentration. We estimate a tax-to-price pass-through of 1.55 (p < 0.01) and an e-cigarette own-price elasticity of -2.6 (p < 0.01) for the average e-cigarette tax. We also estimate a positive cross-price elasticity of demand for e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes of roughly 1.1 for the average tax, suggesting that e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes are economic substitutes. Our results suggest that higher e-cigarette taxes would increase e-cigarette prices and reduce e-cigarette sales, with an unintended effect of increasing traditional cigarette sales. We simulate that for every one standard e-cigarette pod (a device that contains liquid nicotine in e-cigarettes) of 0.7 ml no longer purchased as a result of an e-cigarette tax, the same tax increases traditional cigarettes purchased by 6.2 extra packs.

Examining The Effects Of Public Policies And Addiction On Purchase Of Tobacco Products With Causal Inference And Machine Learning Methods, Xueting Deng Jan 2020

Examining The Effects Of Public Policies And Addiction On Purchase Of Tobacco Products With Causal Inference And Machine Learning Methods, Xueting Deng

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

My three essays explore the effects of tobacco policies and addiction on the consumption of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. Recently, jurisdictions imposed taxes and other regulations on e-cigarettes, with the hope to raise tax revenues and address health concerns regarding e-cigarette use, especially youth addiction. My first essay in Chapter 1 focuses on the effects of e-cigarette taxes on sales of e-cigarettes. It compares the two types of tax policies on sales of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and smoking-cessation products. This comparison provides information for lawmakers on decisions of taxes regarding the perspectives of revenue generation and tobacco control. Second, after …

Essays On Disability, Public Assistance Programs And Employment, Xiaoqi Zhu Jan 2020

Essays On Disability, Public Assistance Programs And Employment, Xiaoqi Zhu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation explores the relationship between disability, public assistance programs and employment. The first chapter investigates the impact of chronic pain on the labor market participation decisions of people nearing retirement age. The results from estimating a random effect discrete-time hazard model suggest that chronic pain greatly enlarges the hazard of exiting labor market even after controlling for many diseases that contribute to pain, and this effect increases with the severity of pain level. I further estimate a discrete-time competing risks model to explore the association between chronic pain and labor market exits due to different reasons. The finding indicates …

Does How One Uses Mindfulness Meditation Matter? : An Experimental Evaluation Of The Acute Impact Of Mindfulness In A Control Vs. Acceptance Context On Anxious Arousal In A Non-Clinical Sample, Eric Daniel Tifft Jan 2020

Does How One Uses Mindfulness Meditation Matter? : An Experimental Evaluation Of The Acute Impact Of Mindfulness In A Control Vs. Acceptance Context On Anxious Arousal In A Non-Clinical Sample, Eric Daniel Tifft

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Mindfulness meditation has existed in Eastern cultures for thousands of years; nonetheless, its introduction to Western society and psychological science is a recent development. Numerous psychosocial interventions now include mindfulness practice as a core therapeutic intervention. Increasingly, mindfulness and other meditative practices are being promoted within popular culture as strategies to regulate stress, anxiety, and other unpleasant emotional or psychological events. Yet, using mindfulness to regulate and control unwanted private experiences is antithetical to the original intended purpose of such strategies, namely, to observe, welcome and accept private experiences just as they are. Research in emotion regulation and thought suppression …

A Default Option For Health : Improving Nutrition With The Financial And Geographic Constraints Of Food Insecurity, Jaime Ashley Coffino Jan 2020

A Default Option For Health : Improving Nutrition With The Financial And Geographic Constraints Of Food Insecurity, Jaime Ashley Coffino

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Food insecurity, the limited availability of nutritionally adequate food, is associated with increased risk for obesity and associated health problems. There is a crucial need for sustainable interventions that improve diet-related health in individuals with food insecurity. In behavioral economics, the default option is the option a consumer obtains if they do not make an active choice. The current study aims to improve the nutritional quality of groceries purchased online by individuals with food insecurity with the use of a prefilled online grocery shopping cart (i.e., a default option). Over the course of five weeks, food pantry users (n = …

An Extension Of Social Justice : A Rawlsian Application Of Justice For The Intellectually Disabled, Jennifer Christina Tillman Jan 2020

An Extension Of Social Justice : A Rawlsian Application Of Justice For The Intellectually Disabled, Jennifer Christina Tillman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, I add to the literature in the following way. First, I review the existing criticisms of Rawls’s theory of justice, which claims that he is unable to address the question of justice for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Second, I explain how Rawls’s idea of reciprocity can accommodate some forms of disability but not the more severe cases. Third, I develop an account of a right to political identity that can provide an extension of Rawls’s theory to address the more severe cases of disability. From these steps, I will suggest that these changes will allow us to …

Value-Based Reimbursements In The Us Health Care Market : Direct And Spillover Effects Of Medicare Readmissions Program, Soumyadeb Chatterjee Jan 2020

Value-Based Reimbursements In The Us Health Care Market : Direct And Spillover Effects Of Medicare Readmissions Program, Soumyadeb Chatterjee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this thesis, I take up the question of how the Medicare penalties introduced by the Hospital Readmissions Reduction program (HRRP) impacted the US health care system. The demand side of US health care system is highly fragmented where hospitals and other providers have to serve very different kinds of patients from different payers. Since the majority of a hospital's income is drawn from Medicare, a sharp reduction in its reimbursements is bound to have an effect on its health care delivery to all patients.

A Comparison Of Nomothetic And Idiographic Approaches To Routine Measurement And Feedback : Clinician Perceptions And Decision Making, Matteo Bugatti Jan 2020

A Comparison Of Nomothetic And Idiographic Approaches To Routine Measurement And Feedback : Clinician Perceptions And Decision Making, Matteo Bugatti

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Rates of treatment failures in psychotherapy are unsatisfactorily high. Patient-focused research addresses this issue by promoting the implementation of routine outcome monitoring (ROM) and measurement feedback systems (MFS) that support treatment personalization and clinical responsiveness. Nevertheless, ROM and MFS utilization rates in routine practice remain low and many clinicians report reservations regarding their integration, which may be a function of reliance on nomothetic measures. Research suggests that idiographic (i.e., individualized) measures may have the potential to overcome these obstacles. However, little is known regarding clinicians’ perceptions of idiographic ROM and MFS. The present study examined clinicians’ reasons for use and …

Harsh Parenting And Later Aggression Among Emerging Adults : Moderating Role Of Positive Parenting And Resting Skin Conductance Level, Li Shen Chong Jan 2020

Harsh Parenting And Later Aggression Among Emerging Adults : Moderating Role Of Positive Parenting And Resting Skin Conductance Level, Li Shen Chong

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Parenting plays a crucial role in one’s development and well-being. The association between harsh parenting and later aggression problems is well established. However, harsh parenting may not occur in a vacuum. Harsh parenting may occur within a varying degree of positive parenting. Research has shown that positive parenting can act as a protective factor against the adverse effects of harsh parenting. Moreover, autonomic nervous system activation may moderate the effects of harsh parenting on aggressive behavior. The goal of this study was to examine whether sympathetic nervous system activity, as measured by skin conductance level (SCL), and positive parenting, moderate …

The Moderating Role Of Personality On Person-Organization Fit And Turnover, Jane Park Jan 2020

The Moderating Role Of Personality On Person-Organization Fit And Turnover, Jane Park

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Two studies were conducted to investigate whether personality traits serve as boundary conditions of the person-organization fit and turnover relationship, and whether continuous commitment may help explain why personality moderates the relationship between person-organization fit and turnover. The first study examines the effect of extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness on the relationship between person-organization fit and turnover. The sample consisted of 1,251 office managers at a large, national organization. The second study follows up on the first study and examines the same relationships. In addition, the second study includes the effect of continuous commitment on the relationship between person-organization fit and …

The Dynamics Of Financial Condition In The U.S. State, Local, And Territory Governments : Financial Reporting, Public Service Delivery, And Tax Policy, Youngsung Kim Jan 2020

The Dynamics Of Financial Condition In The U.S. State, Local, And Territory Governments : Financial Reporting, Public Service Delivery, And Tax Policy, Youngsung Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A large body of literature in public administration has demonstrated the importance of financial condition in managing government organizations. Scholars have found that financial condition affects many aspects of public management while governments actively respond to their financial conditions. Using data from varied levels of U.S. governments – states, localities, and territories – this dissertation examines the dynamic roles of financial condition in three important areas of public management: financial reporting, public service delivery, and tax policy. The first essay examines how financial condition affects the ways in which state governments communicate with stakeholders through official financial documents. It applies …

Forecasting State Tax Revenues, Recessions And Their Uncertainties Using Mixed-Frequency Data, Model Averaging, Bootstrap, Roc Analysis And Machine Learning, Cheng Yang Jan 2020

Forecasting State Tax Revenues, Recessions And Their Uncertainties Using Mixed-Frequency Data, Model Averaging, Bootstrap, Roc Analysis And Machine Learning, Cheng Yang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In recent years models with mixed frequency have been extensively used to forecast low-frequency variables such as GDP and inflation, but we are one of the first to use this framework in state government revenue forecasting. New York State had a record of passing late budgets before. In order to facilitate budget negotiations, which often center on forecasts, we develop a Mixed-Data Sampling (MIDAS) model for revenue forecasting using jagged edge data sets in the first chapter. We forecast yearly tax revenues using monthly data on tax receipts and also two dynamic factors extracted from a set of selected monthly …

Institutional Racism In Child Welfare Organizations And Supervisory Support : A Mixed Methods Study, Sreyashi Chakravarty Jan 2020

Institutional Racism In Child Welfare Organizations And Supervisory Support : A Mixed Methods Study, Sreyashi Chakravarty

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The presence of racism within an organization is a threat to its overall health and working because it directly affects the well-being and morale of the employees. More specifically, previous studies have shown that racial and ethnic minority workers face discrimination related to lack of representation in higher positions, exclusion from decision-making bodies as well as discrimination from co-workers, and supervisors. Grounded in the Leader-Member Exchange Theory, this mixed-methods research revisits this problem by identifying previously unknown manifestations and predictors of workplace racism in child welfare agencies. The following research questions were developed: 1) What are the experiences of discrimination, …

Do Distractor Suppression And Learning Intentionality Contribute To The Attentional Boost Effect?, Stephanie C. Crocco Jan 2020

Do Distractor Suppression And Learning Intentionality Contribute To The Attentional Boost Effect?, Stephanie C. Crocco

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the Attentional Boost Effect (ABE), a target-detection response enhances memory for simultaneously presented unrelated stimuli (Swallow & Jiang, 2010; see Swallow & Jiang, 2013 for a review). In two experiments, participants read aloud words simultaneously presented with a dot. Trials were presented every 1150 ms (Experiment 1) or every 2200 ms (Experiment 2). In a divided attention (DA) task, participants made a key-press to dots of a specific color. In a full attention (FA) task, they only read the words aloud while ignoring all dots. Under either intentional or incidental learning instructions, the DA task included Target words, and …

Understanding Latinas' Responses To Coercive Control : Marianismo Beliefs, Relationship Satisfaction, And Commitment, Nicole Da Silva Jan 2020

Understanding Latinas' Responses To Coercive Control : Marianismo Beliefs, Relationship Satisfaction, And Commitment, Nicole Da Silva

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although substantial evidence indicates that Latinas are at high risk for experiencing negative consequences from intimate partner violence (IPV; Alvarez & Fedock, 2016), few studies have tested the applicability of theories of IPV in this population. The present study, which was based on the investment model of IPV (Rusbult, 1995), was designed to investigate how specific gender role beliefs (i.e., marianismo) for Latinas contribute to their responses to coercive control (a core aspect of IPV; Dutton & Goodman, 2009) by their male partners.
