Engaging With Difficult Topics In The Archives: Suicide And Historical Empathy, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

The development of historical empathy in students is a desired learning outcome in many history curriculums. Although historical empathy is written about frequently in educational literature, it is not addressed in archival journals. The integration of "historical empathy" into archival pedagogy is rich with opportunities. Three archivists discuss their successful collaborations with educators to develop archival projects that incorporate empathy development in a wide range of academic settings.

Presented as part of a panel.

Actores De La Política De Calidad En La Educación Superior Costarricense, Eugenia Gallardo-Allen

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Capacidades Institucionales Para La Implementación Local Del Acuerdo De Paz Con Las Farc: El Punto Sobre Participación Política En El Municipio De Ituango, Colombia, Xamara Mesa Betancur Aug 2019

Capacidades Institucionales Para La Implementación Local Del Acuerdo De Paz Con Las Farc: El Punto Sobre Participación Política En El Municipio De Ituango, Colombia, Xamara Mesa Betancur

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

Proving Their Love: Violence And Gender Norms In Descriptions Of Relationships Among Rural Mexican Adolescents, Heidi Adams Rueda, Steven Hoffman, Kaitlin Grytza Aug 2019

Proving Their Love: Violence And Gender Norms In Descriptions Of Relationships Among Rural Mexican Adolescents, Heidi Adams Rueda, Steven Hoffman, Kaitlin Grytza

Social Work Faculty Publications

Mexican youth from impoverished areas are at increased risk for experiencing relationship violence. Research in the United States has suggested that perpetration may be contextualized by culturally-influenced gender values, specifically performance of negative aspects of male masculinity (i.e., machismo) and its female counterpart (i.e., marianismo). This study utilized focus group methods to explore how middle school adolescents (N = 98) from a rural area of Central Mexico differentiate between healthy and unhealthy dating relationships.

We evoked a feminist developmental lens to interpret themes which centralized males as physical and sexual aggressors and to offer culturally-relevant program and practice recommendations.

Recounting The Conversation: Learning How To Write A Literature Review, Alexandra O. Hendley Aug 2019

Recounting The Conversation: Learning How To Write A Literature Review, Alexandra O. Hendley

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This in-class activity gives students practice summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from numerous sources – skills needed when writing a literature review. As a lowstakes, collaborative, in-class writing task, this activity may also help alleviate some of the fears that students may have about writing. Writing manuals like Writing in Sociology (Edwards 2015) and Writing in Sociology: A Brief Guide (Smith-Lovin and Moskovitz 2017), refer to scholarly literatures as “conversations” occurring within a “party” or “room full of people.” Applying this metaphor, this exercise asks students to imagine themselves at a party, overhearing attendees’ remarks. Students get a list of …

Are Academic Archives Championing Edi Initiatives In Digital Collections Metadata Practices?, Jessica Serrao

Presentations

This poster covers an in-progress research study that plans to examine the influence of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives on digital collections metadata practices of academic archives. EDI initiatives for libraries and archives are becoming commonplace as a strategy to address bias, racism, discrimination, oppression, and privilege. SAA’s Statement on Diversity and Inclusion and Core Values of Archivists reflects the importance of these initiatives. This study will include a survey of metadata practitioners to gauge: how EDI initiatives are incorporated into digital collections descriptive metadata; whether they align with institutional and/or library-wide EDI strategies; and how certain practices were …

Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson Aug 2019

Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

In the two papers that comprise this thesis, I will be discussing Bone Spatulate Tools (BSTs) specifically those made of artiodactyl humeri found within Chaco Canyon, NM. These archaeological tool types permit the investigation of androcentric biases by way of legacy data acquired using the Chaco Research Archive (CRA). By redressing these archaeological biases, I hope to resuscitate an understudied tool type and highlight their function and importance in Chacoan toolkits. In chapter two, I investigate women and gendered activities by examining Humeri Spatulate Tools (HSTs) that are found at Chacoan great and small house sites. In this study, I …

Tiny Houses In Metropolitan Areas Of Nebraska: Seasonal Or Permanent Living Environments, Michele L. Hybner Aug 2019

Tiny Houses In Metropolitan Areas Of Nebraska: Seasonal Or Permanent Living Environments, Michele L. Hybner

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

This study is designed to determine if tiny houses offer a viable seasonal and/or permanent living environment for Nebraska residents. Two objectives are used to assess the viability of tiny housing in this Midwestern state. The first analyzes the economics (demand, supply, and cost) of tiny housing in metropolitan areas of Nebraska. The second identifies barriers to occupancy of tiny houses in the state. The results of this research are significant because tiny housing presents a means to address the state’s need for more affordable housing options available to Nebraska residents. At the time of this study, 11.4% of Nebraska’s …

Measuring Impacts Of Uncertainty, Irreversibility, And Loss Aversion On The Adoption Of Crop Canopy Sensors Among Nebraska Corn Producers, Brooks Ronspies Aug 2019

Measuring Impacts Of Uncertainty, Irreversibility, And Loss Aversion On The Adoption Of Crop Canopy Sensors Among Nebraska Corn Producers, Brooks Ronspies

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Understanding barriers to adoption of Precision Agricultural Technologies (PATs) is important to the growth of agricultural productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. This thesis proposes and evaluates a model for estimating the impact of uncertainty, irreversibility, and loss aversion on producers’ adoption of crop canopy sensors in order to explain adoption behavior that contradicts previous expectations about the conditions necessary for technology adoption. The model is evaluated using estimated statistical distributions of price and field characteristics designed to match observations of actual corn and nitrogen prices, and of conventional and crop canopy sensor based nitrogen application. Results from this model using expected …

Economic Inequality, Regional Development, And Internal Migration In Indonesia, Khoirunurrofik Khoirunurrofik Aug 2019

Economic Inequality, Regional Development, And Internal Migration In Indonesia, Khoirunurrofik Khoirunurrofik

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

This study aims to probe the determinants of inter-provincial migration flows in Indonesia and how economic and development changes affect migration patterns. We employ three census periods, 1990, 2000, and 2010. Our study finds that an increase in relative inequality between origin and destination provinces decreases inter-provincial migration and relatively high distance elasticity in Indonesia leads to high migration cost. People are more inclined to migrate due to push factors as opposed to pull factors from the destination region, thus indicating a strong relationship between the level of regional development and the willingness of people to migrate.

Microcredit Accessibility In Rural Households: Evidence From Indonesia, Danang Budi Santoso Aug 2019

Microcredit Accessibility In Rural Households: Evidence From Indonesia, Danang Budi Santoso

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

Extant literature suggests that microcredit may improve borrowers social and economic welfare. This study aimed to investigate the microcredit accessibility of rural households in Indonesia. Binary Logistic regression was used to distinguish the characteristics of microcredit borrowers and non-borrowers, and the factors affecting the approval of microcredit application. Primary data was collected through a survey on 488 rural households in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The empirical results suggested that age, marital status and education attainment significantly affect the characteristics of clients and non-clients of microcredit. The results also revealed that age of borrowers, household income, interest rates, and loan duration are key …
