How Specific Is Domain-Specific Slowing? Evidence For A General Form Of A Domain-Specific Mechanism, Cynthia C. Flores
How Specific Is Domain-Specific Slowing? Evidence For A General Form Of A Domain-Specific Mechanism, Cynthia C. Flores
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Faces are special not just because our ability to quickly and accurately process faces is integral for social functioning throughout our lives, but also because faces are considered a unique class of visual stimuli (i.e., faces rely more on holistic processing than objects and there exist specialized, face-specific regions in the brain). Behavioral and neuropsychological research point to face processing as dissociable from other kinds of visuospatial processing. Although there is evidence that neural specificity for faces is retained in older adults, there is also evidence that age-related impairments are greater in face processing, relative to object processing. Using a …
Executive Abilities And Academic Achievement In Children With Sickle Cell Disease, Erika Wesonga
Executive Abilities And Academic Achievement In Children With Sickle Cell Disease, Erika Wesonga
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Academic achievement is crucial to a child’s psychosocial and occupational success (Davaoudzadeh et al., 2015; Margari et al., 2013). In children with sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic disorder resulting in abnormal hemoglobin and significant neurologic sequelae, poor academic achievement is common (e.g. Wang et al., 2001). Studies of typically-developing children have revealed links between academic achievement and neuropsychological abilities, particularly higher-order executive abilities that are mediated primarily by frontal brain regions (Altemeier et al., 2006; Bull & Scerri, 2001). In children with SCD, there is a wealth of evidence that executive abilities are impaired (Berkelhammer et al., 2007), but …
Effort, Avolition And Motivational Experience In Schizophrenia: Analysis Of Behavioral And Neuroimaging Data With Relationships To Daily Motivational Experience, Adam Culbreth
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has suggested an association between motivational impairment in those with schizophrenia and reduced willingness to expend effort on experimental tasks. However, few studies have examined the neural correlates of effort-based decision-making in those with schizophrenia. In the current study, we aimed to examine willingness to expend effort, the associated neural circuitry of effort-based decision-making, and the impact of experimentally-defined effort-based decision-making on daily motivational experience in schizophrenia. We recruited 28 individuals with schizophrenia and 30 healthy controls to perform an effort-based decision-making task while undergoing fMRI scanning. In order to assess whether willingness to expend effort was associated …
Essays On Marketing Strategy, Chang Liu
Essays On Marketing Strategy, Chang Liu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I apply game-theoretical methods in the context of marketing research and investigate the effects of stylized facts in behavioral economics. Chapter 1 studies the effects of managerial optimism on firms’ performance. Research has shown that many managers and entrepreneurs tend to be optimistic and are inclined to believe that negative shocks happen to them less frequently than to others. However, there is also evidence suggesting that such optimism is often inaccurate in reality and managerial optimism can lead to the failure of a company. We develop a game-theoretic model to investigate the impact of managerial optimism on …
Medical Aid In Dying: Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs Of Licensed Psychologists, Christine Caroline Merz
Medical Aid In Dying: Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs Of Licensed Psychologists, Christine Caroline Merz
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Medical aid in dying (MAID) is a process by which individuals with terminal illness can voluntarily ingest a lethal dose of medication provided to them by their physician to intentionally end their life. MAID is currently legal in eight U.S. states and several other countries. Licensed psychologists and other mental health professionals are implicated in MAID laws in the form of psychological evaluation that is required for select patients. Little is known about the knowledge and attitudes of psychologists regarding MAID, including views on legal and ethical acceptability, and professional competence to conduct psychological evaluations for patients requesting MAID. The …
Trajectories And Patterns Of Wealth In Later Life: Implications For Physical, Mental, And Cognitive Health, Yu-Chih Chen
Trajectories And Patterns Of Wealth In Later Life: Implications For Physical, Mental, And Cognitive Health, Yu-Chih Chen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to contribute to our understanding of the longitudinal link between wealth and health in later life. Prior research on the wealth-health relationship has focused on general households, with little consideration for older adults. Further, several gaps are identified in the literature. For example, studies often utilize a shorter window of observation and treat wealth as a static measure without considering the trajectory and the heterogeneity of wealth over time. In addition, prior studies often explore the impact of wealth on a single aspect of health, ignoring the “codependent” nature of health at older ages. Further, the impacts …
The Philippines In 2018: A Year Of Disruption And Consolidation, Arjan P. Aguirre
The Philippines In 2018: A Year Of Disruption And Consolidation, Arjan P. Aguirre
Political Science Department Faculty Publications
2018 is a year of so much uneasiness and tension in Philippine politics. It saw one of the greatest crises in the Supreme Court, the bloodiest period in local politics of late, and successive attempts to silence critics of the president and the government. This year also witnessed major political alignments in the Duterte administration: a change in the leadership of the Senate, the election of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as Speaker of the House, the rivalry between Hugpong ng Pagbabago and Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan, and the eventual termination of the alliance with the radical left. This review …

Combined Correlational Effects Of Motivation, Emotional Intelligence And Human Capital Development On Job Satisfaction Of Librarians In Nigerian Public University Libraries, Japheth Abdulazeez Yaya Dr, Uloma Doris Onuoha Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study investigated the combined correlational effects of motivation, emotional intelligence and human capital development on the job satisfaction of librarians in Nigerian public universities. A correlational survey research design was adopted. The study population consisted of 1,254 librarians in public university libraries in Nigeria, from which 923 were selected using simple random sampling. The research instrument used was a self-developed questionnaire. A response rate of 67.2% was achieved. Data were analysed using descriptive (percentage, mean, average mean and standard deviation) and inferential (ANOVA) statistics. The study revealed significant relationship among the combined contributions of motivation, emotional intelligence and human …

Reaching An Optimal Target: How Prambors Radio Network Uses Content To Connect With Millennials, Kartika Singarimbun, Siti Karlinah, Yuliandre Darwis, Dadang Rahmat Hidayat
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Broadcast content is considered important, especially for radio network in Indonesia. However, it is often questioned because the media can be influenced and controlled by the owner. In this article, Prambors Radio’s broadcast content for Jakartan upper-class millennials is examined from the perspective of critical political economy. The theoretical approach is guided by the notion of "commodification" applied to business communication by Vincent Mosco and by the concept of "exploitation" based upon authors aligned with the critical approach in the field of media studies. Prambors holds a radio network spreading in nine regions with homogeneous and Jakarta-centric content. Prambors Radio, …
Spatial Navigation Ability As A Predictor Of Increased Clinical Impairment, Taylor Hendershott
Spatial Navigation Ability As A Predictor Of Increased Clinical Impairment, Taylor Hendershott
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Spatial navigation deficits are observed in Alzheimer disease (AD) cross-sectionally, but prediction of longitudinal clinical decline has been less examined. Cognitive mapping (CM) was assessed in 95 participants and route Learning (RL) was assessed in 65 participants at baseline. Clinical progression over an average of 4.16 years was assessed using the Clinical Dementia Rating scale. Relative predictive ability of these tasks was compared to episodic memory, hippocampal volume and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (ptau181/Aβ42 ratio). CM and RL were significant predictors of clinical progression (ps181/Aβ42 in prediction (psTaken together the results suggest that baseline spatial navigation …
Scaling-Up Child And Youth Mental Health Services: Assessing Coverage Of A County-Wide Initiative, Cole Douglas Hooley
Scaling-Up Child And Youth Mental Health Services: Assessing Coverage Of A County-Wide Initiative, Cole Douglas Hooley
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Over 7 million children and youth have a diagnosable mental illness any given year. There are evidence-based treatments (EBTs) to effectively treat these conditions, but these EBTs reach a very small percentage of their target population with treatment rates between 1-3%.1 We know very little about what influences these coverage rates. Beginning in 2009, the Los Angeles County Mental Health Department (LACDMH) began an ambitious agenda to scale-up the provision of EBTs in child/youth mental health care. The present study seeks to contribute to the scale-up literature by examining three questions based on LACDMH’s initiative: 1) To what extent have …
Caseworker Turnover In Foster Care Services: Problem Or Symptom? A System Dynamics Approach, Marian Joan Stahlschmidt
Caseworker Turnover In Foster Care Services: Problem Or Symptom? A System Dynamics Approach, Marian Joan Stahlschmidt
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Child welfare (CW) caseworkers perform a crucial role in our society--ensuring the safety, permanency, and well-being of one of our most vulnerable populations, victims of child maltreatment. Yet, since its inception in the early 20th century, CW, including foster care services, has been plagued by high turnover rates that have been associated with delayed permanency and recurrent maltreatment. This dissertation aimed to develop a dynamic hypothesis about the system structure that produces turnover in foster care services, to create a formal system dynamics simulation model representing the problem, to develop an intervention to reduce the problem, and to test …

The Archival Challenges And Choices Of A Small Non-Profit Organization Attempting To Preserve Its Unique Past, Mattias Olshausen
Journal of Western Archives
Holden, located in Washington’s Cascade Mountains above the West side of Lake Chelan, originated as a copper-mining company town in 1937. In 1960, three years after the operation shut down, it was transformed into a non-profit Lutheran retreat center, now known as Holden Village. Both the mining and Lutheran communities have generated substantial archival collections, the three largest of which are currently housed at the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, and Holden itself. Making use of finding aids, reports and summaries written by past and present Holden archivists, and the personal recollections of former residents, this paper traces the …

In a bold and unprecedented move by the University, a new building, housing Library and Learning Services, Student Services and Careers was agreed by the University’s Board of Governors at their November 2016 meeting. At an initial cost of £26m it represents the largest single investment in a new building project by the University. This was a project to create an inspiring building and ‘provide an intellectually stimulating, creative and inclusive environment for [the university’s] community’. Whilst being highly student-focused, it was designed as a facility for the entire Edge Hill community including researchers, staff, alumni, and external …
Adding Up The Flipped Subscription Model, Scott Nicholls, Simon Hart, Howard Amos, Jill Benn
Adding Up The Flipped Subscription Model, Scott Nicholls, Simon Hart, Howard Amos, Jill Benn
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
One of the common pathways proposed to achieving a global open access scholarly publishing model is the “flipped” approach. In this scenario, journal publishers “flip” their pricing model from subscription to gold open access (gold OA) and library budgets are redirected from supporting subscriptions to Article Publishing Costs (APCs) associated with gold OA. Initiatives such as OA2020, and more recently Plan S, have to varying degrees advocated for this approach.
Underlying the flipped model is the assumption there is enough money in the global academic library subscription system to cover the costs of a scholarly publishing model based on APCs. …

Determining Correlations Between Library Usage And Student Success At The Durban University Of Technology: A Pilot Study, Sagren R. Moodley, Sean R. Carte
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Thorpe et al. (2016: 373) note that there is a growing trend for academic libraries to adopt measures that demonstrate the value of the library in the context of student success. While it may seem intuitive to librarians that students who engage more with library services and resources learn more, Oakleaf (2017) cautions that providing reliable evidence to support this is not straightforward. Librarians are aware of the numerous activities students engage with in the library, and, according to Soria, Fransen and Nackerud (2013), it is important to examine the differences of each of those interactions in relation to student …
Every Step Counts: Adapting Qualtrics To Encourage Student Engagement In Library Orientations, Jennifer Gu, Christopher Chan
Every Step Counts: Adapting Qualtrics To Encourage Student Engagement In Library Orientations, Jennifer Gu, Christopher Chan
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Many libraries have adopted gamification strategies to enhance their orientation programmes, in the hope of encouraging better student engagement via goal-based design. A literature review reveals a lack of in-depth, granular data on participant behavior in these gamified activities, with evidence generally limited to post-event feedback and comments. Such data could potentially provide insights to help assess the extent to which orientation programme outcomes have been achieved.
An example of an orientation activity with in-depth usage data is provided by Hong Kong Baptist University Library’s paperless, mobile-assisted Library Mystery Challenge (the Challenge). Designed using the popular data collection and analysis …

Implementing A Current Research Information System (Cris) In Canada, Merran Carr-Wiggin, Melissa Rothfus, Ann Barrett, Donna Bourne-Tyson
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The practice of research information management (RIM) is becoming more important as the research environment becomes increasingly complex, competitive and globalized. National mandates and requirements of national funding agencies regarding open access and research data management are creating added incentives for universities to showcase their publications and make them available in an open access format. Libraries are well situated to offer expertise throughout the adoption of a research information management system by a university. In aligning themselves with the wider strategic plans of the institution, libraries can use this as a platform to further their own goals and communicate their …
